Military Reverses Ban on Publicizing Fatal War Photos
Yahoo ^ | 10/20/2009 | Staff

The U.S. military command in eastern Afghanistan has rescinded a ban on the publication of photos depicting slain U.S. military personnel, a Pentagon spokesman said Tuesday. The month-old ban had triggered concerns among lawmakers as well as from several media organizations. "I am relieved that this short-lived attempt to control the media and the public's right to know has come to an end," Louise M. Slaughter, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, said in a written response to a query. "Prior restraint on photography is not a good policy for the Pentagon. It's always been my belief that the American people should see the hard reality of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan." A Pentagon official said the decision to undo the ban was internally driven and not caused by pressure from Congress. Some in the Defense Department expressed concern to the brass in Afghanistan that they had gone too far in censoring the press and urged reconsideration of the new policy, the official said. The U.S. military has censored photos in previous conflicts, but the new rule was the most far-reaching restriction instituted for reporters covering the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., was among those in Congress who had expressed concerns about the censorship. While recognizing the sensitivities of families whose loved ones are killed in combat, Pence said the public needs to see the unvarnished story from Afghanistan, as it has in past wars.

Send us some pictures of dead journalists. That should be fair game. Tell them not to turn their backs on the troops.

The ignorance of our elected leaders continues to astound me. Pence is clearly clueless about how the press presented casualties in past wars. He should read some history.

John G. Morris, photo editor of Life Magazine during WWII said: "Our photographers knew to avoid the faces of Allied dead, shoulder patches that revealed unit designations, and 'secret' weapons."

Morris' point was the dead could be photographed, but they were to be kept anonymous.

I say turnabout is fair play. Put cameras in every committee room of the congress, and stream the sessions over the internet.

So we will have worse attacks, film at 11, more recruiting propaganda for the jihadis, all while being cognizant of “muslim sensibilities.”

Perhaps we HAVE forgotten.

Here is a letter about the ROE’s USMC (26 years) Veteran John Bernard wrote to his Congressman Mike Michaud on 7/23/09. His son Lance Cpl Joshua Bernard’s unit was ambushed by the Taliban on 8/14/09 only a few short weeks AFTER the letter had been sent.

The Lancy Cpl. was fatally wounded in the attack. It was all caught in a photograph taken by Julie Jacobson, on assignment from the Associated Press, and published and distributed, IGNORING of the pleas of his father John Bernard and the rest of the Lance Cpl.’s family NOT to publish it ( it is a war crime in my book, but that’s another story):

The original letter written by John Bernard:

Congressman Mike Michaud 7/23/2009 08:01
1724 Longworth HOBWashington, DC 20515-1902

Dear Sir;

I am writing to you today as an American citizen, 26 year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, committed Christian, Husband, Father of two and a businessman. I am also writing to you as the Father of a Marine who is, as all of his brothers in arms are, in harms way. That by itself is not a cause for concern for me because as a Warrior I understand two things:(1) it is the very nature of the calling to which we have been called that we will be thrust into dangerous, even life threatening situations to fight the enemies of our country and (2) that there could not possibly be a safer place to be than in the company of fellow Marines. In any case, that is the nature of the business and those who serve in this capacity have long since dealt with the realities of life in uniform.

There are, however, certain expectations, an unspoken trust within the ranks of those of us who serve and have served in this capacity. One of those is that we have a belief that as Americans, our leadership will not frivolously spend our blood on unworthy pursuit. To those of us who serve, let me be very clear to those of you who hold our lives in your hands; this means that the reason we may die can ultimately be defined as protecting homeland, family and fellow American lives (spelled US citizens). We also assume we will not be used as pawns in some personal vendetta or worse some career building scheme; that we will not be asked to spill our blood in a foreign land to defend the indefensible. We expect we will be able to do that for which we were trained; export violence with ferocity and drive our enemies to their knees with the ultimate goal of ending the conflict by forcing them to do our will. Such are the dreams and aspirations of the Warrior. Men like this seek to serve side by side with like-minded men prepared to meet their destiny on the field of battle; living a life of honor while testing personal courage in the forge of combat. Our nations Warriors have no other expectations, no visions of grandeur, no careers to bolster, no kingdoms to lord over, no sovereignty to subvert. These men just seek to serve their country.

Now that you have ever so basic an understanding of the intrinsic nature of the Warrior; I hope to encourage you to show them at least the dignity of thoughtful and painstaking decision-making when considering when and where to thrust them into the fires of hell. My demand is that you emphatically understand that this decision will have eternal consequences for the men involved and their families. I also expect this decision to be for the simple reason of defense of country and countrymen (again spelled United States Citizens).

If any part of you still understands that you were sent to Washington DC for the sole purpose of defending these shores and to defend the ‘life, liberty and pursuit of happiness’ of the citizens of this nation; and if you still believe you are first a servant of all, then you yet may possess the ability to understand the immorality of what I am about to share with you and the necessity to change this policy NOW.

President Obama has seen fit to replace the sitting ISAF commander with a General McChrystal (see Bio at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_A._McChrystal). Suffice it to say that Gen McChrystal’s understanding of the Warrior ethos is somewhat askew from the mainstream. Also let us cut to the chase and identify him more as a political mouthpiece than a field commander. Add to this the dubious addition of General James L. Jones (see bio at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_L._Jones), who unlike McChrystal has actual combat experience but still shares the same ultimate goals and one world vision as both McChrystal and Obama. What you have here is an unholy trinity injecting their shared philosophy of ‘spare the civilians at all cost’ – even though those civilians are not US citizens and are in fact complicit in their own misfortune. The new ROE presented by McChrystal and under which operation Khanjar was mounted is nothing less than disgraceful, immoral and fatal for our Marines, Sailors and Soldiers on the ground. The Marines and Soldiers that are ‘holding’ territories of dubious worth like Now Zad and Golestan without reinforcement, denial of fire-support and refusal to allow them to hunt and kill the very enemy we are there to confront are nothing more than sitting ducks. Denying them even the ability to fight, which is their only purpose for existing, to defend themselves in a foreign land that sees them first as agents of the devil is detestable to the secular world and immoral to the rest of us. And for those of us with ‘vested interests’ thrust into that foreign land; it angers us. The links I have provided will give you some indication of the insanity of the current situation and the suicidal position this administration has placed these Warriors in. I admonish this administration and all those currently in public office whom we have entrusted with our security, well-being and the very lives and well-being of the best of us, our Warriors to start acting like you actually care or even understand the consequences of ludicrous decisions like this one. I then hold you responsible to actively seek to change this immoral policy to one that allows our Warriors the opportunity to do what they were trained to do; destroy our enemies and protect our citizenry.”

And in the meantime, while bam picks his nose:

Pakistan suffers reverses in offensive against militants

DERA ISMAIL KHAN , Pakistan -- Taliban guerrillas recaptured the birthplace of the Pakistani Taliban leader from the Pakistani army Tuesday, inflicting the heaviest military losses so far in Pakistan's high-stakes offensive in South Waziristan , a refuge for Pakistani extremists, Afghan insurgents and al Qaida .

A government attempt to foment a tribal uprising against the Pakistani Taliban also failed Tuesday. In a meeting with the top Pakistani official for the tribal areas, elders of the area's Mehsud clan refused a request to form a traditional militia, known as a lashkar, to battle the Taliban who've taken over their territory.

Separately, two suicide bomb blasts at an Islamic university in Islamabad, Pakistan's capital, killed six people and wounded at least 20. In response, many educational institutions, including all schools and colleges in the Punjab, the country's most heavily populated province, announced that they'd close.

The Pakistani offensive appears to be first serious operation against extremists in South Waziristan since 2004, when the military entered the area for the first time. Pakistan has thrown some 30,000 soldiers into the fight against an estimated 10,000 Taliban , plus some 1,500 foreign jihadists closely liked to al Qaida .

However, Kotkai, a town surrounded by high mountains in the Sararogha area of South Waziristan , remained in Taliban hands late Tuesday after Pakistani forces were beaten back on the fourth day of the ground operation in South Waziristan .

The town is the birthplace of Hakimullah Mehsud, the head of the Pakistani Taliban. The group's top trainer of suicide bombers, Qari Hussain , also comes from Kotkai, and he has a madrassa, or Islamic school, just outside the town in which hundreds of children and young men have been indoctrinated into suicide attacks.

Security officials, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak to journalists, said that Pakistani troops had thrust into Kotkai only to be hit by a determined counteroffensive that killed seven soldiers, including an army major, and wounded seven more.

*************************************
Utter and complete madness.

John Bernard has well EARNED an ear of those making decisions on our Troops ROE's.

Lance Cpl. Bernard was the Marine that some cold-hearted monster photographer took a picture of right after being hit by a Talabani RPG. It is a bloody and terribly graphic picture of Lance Cpl. Bernard, 21, as he lay bleeding and dying, an appendage missing, while two of his Brother Marines rushed to his side to try to aide him.

September 7th, 2009 "...The U.S. defense secretary, Robert Gates, condemned the decision by the news agency Associated Press to publish the graphic photograph after Bernard was killed in Afghanistan.

In a scathing letter to Tom Curley, president and chief executive of the AP, Gates said the decision was 'appalling', saying it was a matter of 'judgment and common decency' not to publish the photo.

Gates wrote in the letter: 'I cannot imagine the pain and suffering Lance Corporal Bernard's death has caused his family.

'Why your organization would purposely defy the family's wishes knowing full well that will lead to yet more anguish is beyond me.

'Your lack of compassion and common sense in choosing to put this image of the maimed and stricken child on the front page o multiple newspapers is appalling.'

...Finally, after the pics had been distributed by the AP but before they were published. Gates made a phone call to Tom Curley and said 'I am begging you to defer to the wishes of the family."" (NOT TO PUBLISH THE PICTURE!)

The flippin AP went ahead and did it anyway!!!!!

(I won't publish the source as the graphic picture of Lance Cpl. Bernard is on the front page and I will not circulate the picture that cold-hearted monster of a woman took. ~Flyer)

HOWEVER, here is a pic of the Perpetrator, posing and smiling coyly with a couple of Afghan Army soldiers.:

Associated Press photographer Julie Jacobson with Afghan National Army.

From the article:

The U.S. military has censored photos in previous conflicts, but the new rule was the most far-reaching restriction instituted for reporters covering the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., was among those in Congress who had expressed concerns about the censorship

So, from my understanding of the article,it appears there has always been some censoring going on, then about a month ago the censorship was made a little more restricted. Now they've rescinded the censorship but the article doesn't say whether they've gone back to previous levels of censorship or whether they've completely banned any restrictions.

Pence said the public needs to see the unvarnished story from Afghanistan, as it has in past wars.

I wonder which one they've done.

“Aid and Comfort? AP Photo of Dying Marine Now Being Used as a Propaganda Tool/Morale Booster for Jihadists”

Just as the discussion over the publication of a dying Marine’s photo was beginning to wane, new revelations have arisen that are re-igniting the debate: It seems Islamic jihadists have co-opted the image for use as a morale booster and propaganda tool.

The Associated Press published the grim photo despite the repeated and emphatic protests of the late Marine’s family and the Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, and touched off a firestorm of debate. The publication of the bloody, disturbing image of Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard, killed by RPG fire in Afghanistan in mid-August, has prompted some to question the propriety of embedding photojournalists and reporters with US combat troops; others, however, hail the picture and its printing as a example of journalistic integrity.

But with the news that Muslim extremists have hijacked the image to ridicule and celebrate the death of LCPL Bernard, a new concern has arisen: At what point do incidents like this one serve only to demoralize American troops and encourage the enemies of the United States?

This is where I found the link to John Bernard’s site. (There is a pic of Mr. John Bernard there in his Dress Blues. He spent 26 years serving our nation in the Corps.)

I LIKE this guy. From “Barking Moonbat Early Warning System”:

“It was his son, Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard, who was the US Marine that the AP published photos of in early September, bleeding to death after his leg was blown off. Despite repeated requests by the family NOT to publish them, the AP went ahead and did so, to “show the realities of war”. Some pissant twat journaljizzer used his blood to try and garner herself a Pulitzer.

Sgt. Bernard is a grieving father. That doesn’t make him the new Cindy Sheehan, or give him the Unquestionable Moral Highground. I think what it did though, was to finally cause him to speak out against the obvious; well, what is obvious for those in that theater who’s eyes are open. Not obvious to us back home, because a) news from Afghanistan? What’s that? and b) the MSM has no intention of actually learning how this war is being fought, and c) wouldn’t dream of criticizing that way in case it reflected badly on their Lord and Master Chairman Zero. But pay heed: Sgt Bernard is speaking out against the Rules Of Engagement (ROE) put in place this past June. You can’t blame that on Bush, no matter how hard you try. Not that Bush’s ROE for Iraq was much different or much better, nor was his Afghan ROE. If they’d used the BMEWS ROE, we never would have had to send a single soldier over there. The sand would still probably be glowing though.”

The problem with these photos is that they give propaganda tools to the enemy, exploit the deaths of our troops for the Left’s purposes, and add further grief to the family of the deceased. They also help destroy the morale of those who serve along side the KIA. It is utterly dark and needless to take these kind of pictures.

This isn't about documenting truth. It is about being gratuitous and exploitive.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to read as much of FR as I’d been able to previously. I wasn’t aware of the previous thread or even the tightening of the ban. What I was really pointing out in my post is Spence’s remarks.

From my limited recent time on FR I seem to remember some mention of him being one of the better Republicans and maybe even a possible nominee for President in ‘12. I could be way off on the nomination bit because I’m going strictly from memory. It appears from what he said in the article though that Pence wanted the ban lifted completely.

I can’t help but wonder how Robert Gates sleeps at night. He has prostituted himself to a slime ball administration that has no regard or respect for the military.

I am also wondering about McCrystal. Just being handpicked by Obama is disgusting enough; but, watching zero weasel and squirm, while our young men are in jeopardy, is enough to make anyone ill.

Thr final paragraph of Marine Bernards 7/23/09 letter to Congressman Mike Michaud warrants careful reading and consideration.......IMO he foretold what McCrystals ideology/strategy has borne out since......

“President Obama has seen fit to replace the sitting ISAF commander with a General McChrystal (see Bio at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_A._McChrystal).

"I am relieved that this short-lived attempt to control the media and the public's right to know has come to an end," Louise M. Slaughter, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, said in a written response to a query. "Prior restraint on photography is not a good policy for the Pentagon. It's always been my belief that the American people should see the hard reality of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan." A Pentagon official said the decision to undo the ban was internally driven and not caused by pressure from Congress."

Louise M. Slaughter (below, center) D-NY hams it up at a NEA function in 2003:

How ironic that the NEA is in the mix of Obama's propaganda campaigns. And I'm sure Ms. Slaughter likes the kind of pictures published like Lance Cpl Bernard's which help anti-military propaganda. Her comment makes perfect sense in light of this now doesn't it?

"As Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage,'" said Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY), co-chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus. "Now, NEA is helping to bring that stage to every community in America. Shakespeare in American Communities will give audiences in all 50 states the opportunity to enjoy live performances of works by the world's greatest playwright. This wonderful program will enrich our communities and provide valuable educational experiences for our children. I commend the NEA and Chairman Gioia for their tireless work to promote the arts in America."

“’I am relieved that this short-lived attempt to control the media and the public’s right to know has come to an end,’ Louise M. Slaughter, D-N.Y., “

Oh, THIS is priceless!

Despite representing a historically Republican area, Slaughter is one of the most liberal members of the New York congressional delegation from upstate New York, and in the 110th Congress (2007-2008), was the most liberal member of the entire House of Representatives according to National Journal.[2] Indeed, among Congressmen from upstate, only fellow Democrat Maurice Hinchey has a lower lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union. She is one of several Democratic congressmen and senators who post at Daily Kos, a Democratic-oriented blog. She is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

PAY HEED TO THIS ONE:
In early 2005, she authored the Fairness and Accountability in Broadcasting Act, or FAB Act, which would reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, which has been criticized as an attempt to silence religious and conservative broadcasters

Along with John Conyers, in April 2006 Slaughter brought an action against George W. Bush and others alleging violations of the Constitution in the passing of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. The case (Conyers v. Bush) was ultimately dismissed.

BEARS REPEATING!!!

Slaughter is NUTS! Schizophrenic rationalizations. When it comes to everyday American’s speech she is anti-1st Amendment, but when it comes to publishing photos of wounded or dying American troops to be used as propaganda, she’s all for blowing it out of the water!

I REALLY need to hear from Pence on this. At the very, VERY least, they should have added the prerequisite that publishing be dependent on permission from the families of the Fallen Warriors. If they say no, it should be no, because the public nor the press has the right to intrude on a grieving family.
This is just evil.
