Michelle and Barack Obama sat one table over from J. Lo and Marc Anthony, and all four of them were rocking in their seats as Sheila E. shook the house well, really the tent.
The latest installment of the White House music series was too big for the East Room, so a high-wattage assortment of Latin musicians sent pulsating, can't-help-but-bob-along rhythms tumbling out of a giant tent on the mansion's South Lawn.
As it happens, music of all sorts rock, jazz, country, classical has been busting out of the White House all year long.
Presidents have long used the White House as a platform to showcase the best of music and the arts: Chester Arthur staged the first formal East Room concert in the late 1800s.
But the Obamas are demonstrating a commitment to use the White House to promote the arts in a huge way. And they're not just tapping safe, living legends: Fresh faces like bachata band Aventura and Mexican pop sensation Thalia (who lured Obama on to the dance floor briefly) shared a stage with gray eminence Jose Feliciano at last week's Fiesta Latina.
The Obamas' musical push started on Day One, when the Wynton Marsalis Quintet played for a private inaugural celebration party of 100 at the White House.
A month later, the White House brought in Earth, Wind and Fire to entertain visiting governors. And days later, the Obamas hosted an East Room tribute to Stevie Wonder that featured Tony Bennett, Martina McBride and Wonder himself. The president called it "the most accomplished Stevie Wonder cover band in history."
Since then, the lineup has zigzagged all over the musical spectrum.

Our troops are waiting for help....
Hmm Obama is ‘promoting the arts’ in a big way when he has one party after another. If this had been Bush the AP would have lambasted him for being out of touch.
Man its sick watching him schmooze with celebrities, he’s like a little school girl with his autograph book in his hand.
I would love to see the food bill for the White House for a month. It’s been reported that they fly in all types of exotic and expensive items, like Waegu Beef, Lobster etc. I’m guessing all these meals are given to the guests gratis. As soon as the Obama’s here a complaint such as the masses are starving, I’m just waiting for Michelle to come out on the 2nd floor balcony and say, “Let them eat cake.”
party on
That's an interesting question. You may remember last winter - shortly after the Inauguration - Obama hosted a number of the automobile execs at the White House of lunch. Obama's communication staff made a point of telling reporters that the execs were charged for their meals, being the evil capitalists that the all were, of course.
I'm guessing that J Lo, Mark Anthony and Martina McBride weren'tcharged for their meals. Which reminds me, I'm never going to buy another Martina McBride or Brad Paisley album again. And, between the two of them, I probably have 12 or 13 CDs, not any more.
Meanwhile:
-Millions of Americans are unemployed, our economy continues to tank and there is no “hope” in sight.
-Our Troops die as Obama fails to send them the requested backup.
-Obama fails to provide enough vaccinations for Swine flu and so far, over 80 American children have died from this flu.
-Obama works around the clock to put our country further in debt, by the trillions.
-A Revolution gets closer to erupting due to Obama’s failure to lead and his own attack on our Constitution and our country.
And the party continues.......
Ugh... say it ain't so, Martina... Hopefully it was just an invitation that she was too polite to turn down.
Check out markomalley's fantastic "Obama fiddles while Rome burns" graphic at the top of the thread! Pass it on...
The Presidency as a Reality TV Show.
Obama is Jon, and Michelle is Kate. The parties they throw are opportunities to for other predators to attempt to prey on them — that is what makes such parties the constant of adultery-as-power politics class.
Why can’t someone get that information about the costs of these shindigs...I’d like to see the menus...Paging Michelle Malkin...
Oh, but they can be excused. After all, they need to bring elegance back to the White House after 8 years of that crude cowboy and his prim librarian wife!
Sadly a lot of people really believe that.
Of course if they want to push the arts and show their support for musicians why don’t they open up these events to the public? Ha ha.
Thanks for the ping!
Wonder if there are some celebrities who have turned down playing for the King and Queen. Wonder if Obama will dare invite musicians such as Nugent and Hank Williams, Jr.
Can you IMAGINE Ted Nugent at the Obama White House? I’d pay to see that! LOL
He is the most useless person on the face of the earth.
IMO, BHO wants Afghanistan to fail.
Party on...
