(CNN) - It was an oft-repeated anecdote on the 2008 campaign trail: then-Sen. Joe Biden accepted the request to be the No. 2 on the Democratic presidential ticket at a Delaware dentist office as his wife was undergoing a root canal.
Less discussed however was how Biden first said no to the post when then-Sen. Obama raised the subject months before the final announcement was made.
"I initially said no, that I wasn't interested," Biden told a Pennsylvania crowd Monday night at the annual Allegheny County Democratic Committee dinner. "He asked me to think about it."
Biden said he finally accepted the job "a couple months later" not in a dentist office but in a hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The vice president said he asked the then-Democratic presidential nominee, "Are you really committed to changing the course of this county?"
"He reached out, shook my hand, and said 'I am,'" Biden said.
Of course, according to Biden's wife Jill, the vice president actually had a choice between the No. 2 post and being the Secretary of State.

They made him an offer he couldn’t refuse?
If I were going to be an absolute idiot, totally out of my element, I would have said No too.
What a marshmallow fluff nothing-burger story. Thanks CNN. How interesting another executive branch official who had trouble making a decision. There’s only one thing Joe dreams about... BIDEN 2016 and I just don’t see it happening.
Wow - The Grand Kenyan meets Joe Biden's standards...
The administration seems to ration this guy’s public appearance and interview. Once per month is enough. They cannot deal with damage control more than that without affecting the Leader.
Biden doesn’t have the good memory required to be a competent liar.
Biden = “Gravitas?”
And so Captain Smith shook Lieutenant Murdoch's hand welcoming him as the first mate on the Titanic.
I still say "no" to his being VP.
No offense to the original poster but this is a good recent example of why I don’t read/listen to CNN. While it is an interesting story to add to the “crazy Joe Biden” stack, this isn’t news. Who cares? Why are they focusing on this when there’s REAL news to report? No wonder Foxnews is kicking their butts and raking in the profits. CNN is still reporting on last year.
Plagiarists never exaggerate. You can always count on their candor.
No kidding. I remember reading an article or articles not long after Biden was chosen, that Biden's camp actively campaigned Obama's team to pick him for the VP candidate. I can't believe Joe would lie. Say it ain't so Joe!
That doesn't pass the smell test...
RIIGHT! In other news, NFL player turns down $10M a year offered by Rams because of Rush. Totally believable.
He probably first said “no”, because he didn’t understand the question.
