VA Gov. 2009: McCain Rallies McDonnell Supporters [McDonnell praises McCain] [ew]
The Washington Post ^ | 2009-10-17 | Anita Kumar

Posted on 10/19/2009 9:57:03 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, headlined a packed veterans rally for Virginia's Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell on a cold, rainy Saturday morning.

About 300 supporters crammed into a Veterans of Foreign Wars post that had been decorated with massive red, white and blue "Veterans for McDonnell" signs.

"This is the man who will bring about fiscal discipline, who understands what it means to balance a budget, who understands what pork barrel spending is, who understands that we have an obligation not just to our present citizens and out present veterans but to our children and our grandchildren and not hand them an unsustainable debt," McCain said. "That's Bob McDonnell. He will be a fiscal conservative."

A Navy veteran, McCain was once based at nearby Naval Air Station Oceana. He told funny stories about his military career and said the nation needs a new direction.

"My friends, there's something going on out there in America," McCain said. "It's anger and it's frustration. They're sick and tired of the corruption in Washington. They're sick and tired of the earmark and pork barrel spending."

. . . . .

McDonnell smiled broadly when McCain called him "Governor McDonnell," and later told the audience that McCain "would have made an outstanding president of the United States of America."

You're one to talk about corruption, McCain.

Can we say Keating Five?

Or your attendance at ACORN/SEIU rallies in Florida in 2006?

Or your collusion with La Raza?

Or your assistance in arming the Kosovo Liberation Army, a noted affiliate of al-Qaeda, the terrorist group that later orchestrated 9/11?

I am sick and tired of you running around pretending as if you are a conservative, when in fact you voted for a massive, un-American, fascist bailout of New York bankers one year ago.

So, STFU and GTFO, RINO traitor McCain.

If McDonnell wants to hang out with RINOs like McCain, Huckabee, and Romney, he shouldn't be surprised when folks start getting suspicious of McDonnell himself.

Wow, 300 people attended. I’m impressed!

No, McDonnell hasn’t impressed me ever since he ran from his own words that WAPO published. You either believed them or you didn’t. If he did he was willing to sacrifice them rather than lose the election. If he didn’t, then he does only what is expected to get by to reach his goal.

WAPO is not excused for what they did. But McDonnell clarfied what kind of man he was during that process. I do want him to win, but not because I’m impressed with him or want to build the GOP. I want to build conservatives and I don’t see him as a principled one. No, I want him to win to frighten the tails of the “blue dogs” in Congress. That’s the only reason. Same with in N.J.

Fully agree with you.

I hope the folks in AZ aren’t fooled by McCain’s sudden support for conservative values. He’s only trying to woo conservatives to vote for him in 2010. If he’s re-elected (shudder!!), he will revert to the slimy side like his light in the loafers best buddy Graham.

Are you talking about what he wrote many years ago in regard to women working?

He could hardly “stand by” those words if in subsequent years his perspective and his actions literally changed. As I understand it his wife works and so do all of his daughters. And he’s ok with what they have done and are doing.

That’s reality.

Not much you can do with that one.

You know rabs, the only one I'm suspicious of here is YOU. For some reason you've got this burr up your butt and are trying to drag down Bob McDonnell.

I'll say it once again, this is a watershed election. And YOU KNOW Bob McDonnell is no RINO. If you don't pull the middle ground vote, you'll never win and Republicans, and Conservatives along with them will be the minority party for decades, not just a few cycles. It's just that simple.

Would I have preferred that McCain not campaign with McDonnell? Probably.

But I understand here that the bigger picture is keeping Creigh Deeds and the other minions of Barack Obama out of office.

It's time you either grasp that vision, or take a two-week vacation.

It’s like a Lord of the Flies thing, I think.

I suspect a lot of good conservatives are going to be trashed over the next year. For certain supporters, it’s all about Sarah Palin.

They can’t allow McDonnell to win big as a conservative without Sarah’s help.

But isn't your complaint with McDonnell that he is too religious for you? If not, I apologize, but in other threads you suggested that, for example, Palin may be staying away from Virginia because of she read McDonnell's thesis.

If so, while that's a legitimate reason not to vote for a strong conservative Catholic, it would be a different objection than that being voiced here.

I only said that he was hanging out with known RINOs.

If you don't pull the middle ground vote, you'll never win and Republicans, and Conservatives along with them will be the minority party for decades, not just a few cycles.

Fine. If you want to pander to "the middle ground," go for it, because it has become abundantly clear that's all Republicans have been doing since long before I was even born.

I don't usually apologize for asking questions. I notice you didn't answer.

In a thread titled "Palin a no-show in Virginia", you posted: Maybe she read his thesis?

On this thread, you've said multiple times you won't vote for McDonnell, but have provided no reason.

You've been around a long time, but hadn't posted in a long time, until this year, and your postings up until now were mostly in religious threads (15+ in Bishop vs Gene Robinson thread, 5+ in a thread about flu in churches).

Your home page suggests you consider yourself religious, but not part of an organized religion.

So since you think Palin would be turned off by McDonnell's thesis, which was a conservative religious writing, and you seem to not buy into that conservative religious viewpoint, it seemed a reasonable guess that your problem with McDonnell was that he was injecting his conservative religious views into the race.

But this was just a guess, which is why I asked if that was the reason. I wouldn't have to ask if you would actually voice your objection, instead of just saying you wouldn't vote for him.

Since I haven't accused you of anything other than your direct quote, I don't THINK I need to apologize. If you provide a different explanation for your opposition, and if it turns out my suppositions were off base enough so as to give a false implication of your opinions, I will be happy to apologize.

I don't mean put words in your mouth, after all -- just to get you to more clearly identify your difficulty with McDonnell, given that they only BAD thing you've said about him was regarding his Thesis for a conservative religious institution.

You suggested my complaint was that he is too religious, and that you apologize if not so. I have no problem with his religious views, I have a problem with his apparent views of women, which I don’t see as religiously conservative. I’m sure someone can be a conservative and not view women as he appears to. If you think it’s religious, OK, I don’t.

He’s going to win anyway, so I don’t see it mattering much.

Ronald Reagan knew that he could not win on the conservative vote alone. Any conservative that’s actually won a race knows the same.

Bob McDonnell betrayed no princpals by having John McCain here to campaign for him. He was not pandering. Nor am I.

I just know where the votes are. And I know that if all you do is “motivate the base” then you’ll lose every time.

This isn’t hand grendades or pregnancy where it’s all or nothing. It’s politics.

And the only way to win in politics is to build coalitions.

Your mileage, and your success rate, may vary.

THis is going to be a complex answer, because the issue is very complex — there are three separate independent issues. First, the difference between beliefs in 1989 vs 2009; Second, the difference between religious beliefs and political beliefs; Third, the difference between personal beliefs and belief in government action.

I believe that families are better when women stay home with the children. That is what we did in my family; my wife went back to work part-time once the kids were older and in school. But I wouldn’t want government to pass laws forcing that.

However, government passed laws which favor women who work over women who stay home; I would find it proper and right if a candidate would remove the incentives government gives to women to abandon their children and go to work, if we could do so without removing assistance for women who have no choice but to work.

The point being that, on the political front, you can have personal views (like I think smoking is stupid) that you don’t want government to act on (banning smoking). For McDonnell, his actions in government, and his statements running for governor, prove he will not try to get government to interfere with working women. His wife and his daughters all work, which kind of proves the attacks on him are inaccurate.

Second, the thesis was written for a conservative religious college. It contains religious beliefs. McDonnell’s religion (he is a Catholic) teaches that women cannot be priests. Fundamentalist Christianity teaches that a women should be in submission to her husband as well, with many conservative protestant churches not allowing women to preach, and some not allowing women to teach male adults.

The point being, his thesis was a decidedly religious viewpoint — maybe not your religion, but very much his religion. If you are opposing him for that, I think it is fair to say you are opposing him because his religions is too conservative for you. That you don’t accept his view as valid religiously simply confirms that you reject his religious view on the matter; it’s your right, but I think it is important in a thread where others are attacking him for perceived liberal views, to note that your rejection is for his conservative religious view.

Third, the thesis was written in 1989, today is 2009, and he says his personal views have changed somewhat since then. He says, and his record shows, that he has nothing against working women. The attacks on him for not supporting “equal pay” is typical liberal lunacy. And his views opposing abortion are spot-on for social conservatives today, and not at all anti-women, although his opponent claims that voting to ban partial-birth abortion was “anti-choice” and anti-women”.

But it turns out that when i hit “next page”, it also switched from “comments” to “articles”, so it was just showing the articles you posted, not all your comments.

Switching back to “comments” showed me tons more comments. I should have noticed that.
