Good points. I think we also admired Churchill and his little island in the Battle of Britain.

I know a lot of FReepers pine for the WW2-era press, but honestly, I think the reason they were so gung-ho to beat the Axis Powers had less to do with national security and more to do with how the Nazis had damn near toppled Stalin and the Soviets. If not for Lend-Lease, it would have happened.

Whittaker Chambers was fresh out of the CP when the war started, but even he was surprised at how quickly his former comrades turned on a dime the day Hitler broke the Nazi-Soviet pact and invaded Russia.

The key is always: what's good for socialism is good, period. Everything else is bad.

“You can go back to the 1920s and read Walter Duranty’s”

You are correct.

I remember the Stalin loving Walt and his bogus claims about Castro
"Why, oh why do we not appreciate the saviors who walk among us? (Castro)"

Time made both Hitler and Stalin their man of the year
not once but numerous times.

I just think the communists in the media really came out of the closet in the late
50’s to early 60’s.

Actually I believe that this man cut Nixon's throat:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Mark_Felt
Woodward and Bernstein merely followed his lead.

He also is the one that got Bill Ayers off scott free
by tainting the Weatherman investigation.

I was surprised when Felt’s son and Woodward revealed the identity of “Deep Throat.” I thought the “Deep Throat” figure was a literary composite of multiple sources. Felt apparently took no pride in betraying Nixon.

What do you think about Felt’s connection to Bill Ayers?

I read a twitter message from a New York Times reporter concerning the latest layoff. He says he looks forward to the day when economic ups and downs are no longer an issue in the US. The freaking commie! They want the government to take over the press because the pinkos can not make it in the free market.

[What do you think about Felt’s connection to Bill Ayers?]

Don't know. The Justice Department was having a lot of problems with high profile antiwar trials. The Chicago Seven show trial and Daniel Ellsberg’s acquittal were creating bad press for the government. That was part of the rationale for not indicting Jane Fonda. That Felt deliberately sabotaged the case against Ayers and others is intriguing.

Felt as a young man been very active in the Democratic
Party and had worked closely with James Pope, the senator
from Idaho in the 1930s.

Felt had Big Time connections to the Chicago Democratic
party, and Thomas Ayers was the boss.
