WEST VALLEY CITY The head of the Republican National Committee said Friday he believes voters may have moved beyond the bias against Mormonism that hurt Mitt Romney in last year's presidential election.
Speaking to reporters after a town hall meeting at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, Michael Steele said comments he made earlier this year about Romney being rejected by the GOP base because of his faith were "old news."
"I was speaking to an attitude or a mindset at the time that I thought was unfortunate and I said that I think (Romney) proved just how unfortunate it was for people who felt that way," Steele said, "He's a good man, a principled man, a good leader for our party."
Although Romney failed to win the Republican nomination in the 2008 presidential race, Steele said voters are coming to appreciate those qualities now that Democratic President Barack Obama is in office.
Asked if the mindset against members of the LDS Church would reappear in the 2012 presidential contest, Steele said, "I hope to heaven not. I don't think so. I really don't think so." He said the party "needs to focus on its ability to reach out and embrace the diversity that defines this country."

Romney? Principled? Leader of the GOP?
What sort of crack has Steele been smoking???
I was unaware that RINOism is a religion.
Michael, Michael, Michael.

*BONG*BONG*BONG*BONG*
ROFL
I and others posted all the links (I think you did too) to Steele’s positions, which made him a first-class RINO. We’re supposed to be surprised? Still, you had many freepers falling all over themselves for Steele. News Flash, pandering doesn’t work for Republicans.
I don’t care a bit about Romney’s religion, it’s his politics that turn me off! Steele can’t really be this dumb, can he?
Let him say what he wants. He probably does represent the “GOP”. What’s left of them. He doesn’t represent me. I don’t consider myself part of the “our” he cites. But I think I am over calling them RINO’s. It is their party. It’s not OUR party unless we can control it and clearly we don’t. We can exercise some control in general at the ballot box by throwing the bums out or on policy such as with Miers, amnesty and at very least have slowed the takeover of our healthcare despite being without a place to call “home” right now. When you look at it that way we;ve been pretty effective considering we don’t have representation in either party.
Who, me ? My first preference for party chairman was Katon Dawson followed by Ken Blackwell. Steele was near the bottom in my preference.
“He’s a good man, a principled man”
Funny, Steele used almost those exact words describing his good friend Eric Holder.
No chance I’m voting for Martin Sheen, Mr. Steele.
You may as well run Barack Obama as the nominee, because that is who will win.
I will watch the GOP crash and burn before I support any more RINOs.
What is apparent to me is that there is no leader of the GOP, and there are few, if any, actual conservatives in the GOP. If the GOP can’t produce a leader that supports conservative values, then what the hell is the point of it even existing other than to provide cover for the democrats in the form of Olympia Snowe and Lindsgay Graham.
Seriously, GOP, you have exactly one more chance not to completely screw up and fail like you always do, or it’s new party time, and I don’t give a crap if that means 100% democrat control for the rest of time as recorded by man.
Where is that: “Oh, man not this sh*t again” image?
No thanks. We don’t need another RINO! Romney couldn’t even win his own party in the primary. Sarah is the ONLY conservative who can beat Obama!
Wow, my support for the GOP has just taken another hit across the bow, it’s now listing hard and ready to sink.
Yup. The liberal Zero and Slick Willardbots have a way to always silence the opposition using the you're a ---- card.
I was saying that I thought you were AGAINST Steele. There was a bunch of us posting Steele’s dumb 2nd Amendment views, etc. I thought I remembered you were one of us.
same here. how many more bombs can we take? I had hopes for steele for a while but I think he is going against us hard.
I don’t believe I vociferously opposed him, but I worried he put off too many RINO signals. My worries turned out to be correct, he has been a failure so far (although he’s going to claim the likely VA victory and leaning NJ victories as affirmations that he has — the real problem is that he has blown all those special elections for Congress. We still haven’t gained a single solitary seat since last year, and have lost two in the Senate).
and here I always blamed his liberal record as governor....
Steele and the other RNC leaders seem to look on the party faithful as the heathen class in need of being led out of the wilderness.
The mindset seems to be that if he and they pronounce someone the leader of the party, the rank and file will just fall in behind them and provide their full support.
That isn’t really going to fly with Romney.
Here’s a news flash for you Steele. Right now we’re engaged in a fight to the death over a government health care plan. The Republicans are supposed to be opposed to it. So who do you pick to lead the party? Why a person who pushed though a government health care plan in his home state.
What in the hell are you thinking? Are you trying to destroy the party from within, because if you are, we stupid folks who would still like to support the Republican party would like to know.
I’ve got better things to do than fight the Democrats to block actions you seem willing to facilitate from our side of the isle.
What the hell are you thinking?
And the battle cry will be, "Oh, don't vote Third Party against Romney, our nominee! Rominee! Because, that will give it to the DEMMMMMMOCRATS!"
i can almost hear it now...

"Gov. Gary Herbert, who joined Steele onstage, said the half-filled auditorium should have been "standing room only. We've got to get engaged. We've got to get involved."
(Loosers.)
Go ahead RINOs.
Make my day.
The corrupt pubby hacks would rather lose an election with Comrade Romney than to win with the ‘Cuda. It’s Reagan redux all over again (with apologies to Yogi Berra).
Romney is obviously the same old, same old. The same old stuff will get us the same old results, or better said, the same old lack thereof.
It’s amazing to see a party commit political suicide.
They really want to get whupped again. 06, and 08 weren’t enough.
They didn’t learn.
They never do.
Hooting about Steele’s bong is not going to help anything. He’s quite right, Romney is the pinup guy for the RINO party.
Folks want to have their cake and eat it. They want the conservative who’ll only be the nominee of a third party, and they want to vote R.
This isn’t 1980 and it never will be. The sclerotic party that nominated the geriatric McCain, will nominate Romney. With the aid of thousands of crossover Dems who won’t need to endorse their unopposed incumbent in 2012.
I don’t think Romney is a bad man, but I sure don’t think he’s a principled man. He’s also not an inspiring leader.
I’ve always liked Michael Steele for his optimism, easy smile, good humor, fighting a good fight and his belief in and support for the basic conservative platform. But I don’t understand what happened to him. He seems to have lost his way. He’s been taken over by the beltway, I think. Another one lost to the pub brain trust.
Come back, Michael!
I would like to see a vast exodus from the pub party to a new, more conservative party. I’m talking about millions of people - enough to defeat rats as well as what little would be left of the pubs.
Call it “The Vertebrate Party.”
I share your disappointment. I liked Steele. Now.......well, he’d have to work very hard to get my trust again.
The McCain/Palin ticket was up ++8 to 10 pts. in some polls, days prior to the election.
So rather than helping the GOP, poor loser I am Myth Romney and
TeamROMNEY decided
to attack Gov. Palin (and her defenseless children) to throw Election2008.
The Palmetto Scoop reported: "One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was
the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"Im told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palins people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romneys former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.
Erick Erickson, who organized Operation Leper, said:
"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off
.hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."
Who benefits most from Sanford meltdown? Californian (that's right) Mitt Romney
"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"
"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"
"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"
"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"
"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"
And these people keep calling me for donations, and I keep on not donating, and I tell them why.
Just no clue.
I can’t stand Steele, but I intend to contribute money to, and vote for Romney again.
You guys are way off base with your attacks, alienating the tens of millions of Republicans like myself who support Romney.
Good thing the Mormons had a sudden revelation and decided blacks could be full members of their “church” after all!
But aside from that, it’s not Romney’s Mormonism I don’t like: it’s his raving socialist liberalism.
What we have got to do - starting right now - is to prevent them from imposing Romney on us. He’ll lose just as badly as McCain did, and probably worse, because he wouldn’t tolerate Palin on the ticket.
We have to make it clear that we want no part of Romney.
The fix is in. Obama gets to run against Romney and he will win a second term.
It's not the religion, it's the SOCIALISM...
“He said the party “needs to focus on its ability to reach out and embrace the diversity that defines this country.”
Get rid of this mope. Reaching out is what destroyed the GOP.
Exactly... insular, self-referential cult of religious faggotry just like the church of liberalism...
