The federal government is facing a lawsuit over billions in unclaimed bonds that date back to the patriotic fundraising efforts of World War II, leading to a showdown between states who say they should be given the money and a Treasury Department that claims ownership.

"One of the misunderstandings out there is that there is a lot of cash sitting somewhere in a drawer. Money from savings bonds was used to run the daily operating expenses of the government," Just like Social Security!

I know that I have some savings bonds from the 1960 time frame. I guess I should cash them in!
Any ideas if they know or have logs on the people who have never cashed or claimed them?

I wonder if I have any. As a little girl in school, I can remember something like buying stamps to fill up a book for a bond, or am I confusing this with Green Stamps. I think I was seven or eight at the time.

The unspoken social contract between the government and the governed is now as follows:
"We'll take whatever we damned well please. Fight me for it."
This now works both ways.

I remember them too. They were blue and red. One was a ten cent stamp, and one was for a quarter as I recall. You would get a savings bond when the stamp books were full. We bought them at our friendly local government school. Little did we know that we were financing LBJ’s guns and butter strategery.

Yes, I’m sure you can google it. You can put in the series and the number.

I remember those also, and they were not the S & H Green Stamps. The S & H Green stamps were used to redeem for products.
The stamps you are speaking of were to help fund war. I remember my brothers doing this, and asked him about it some time ago, I can't remember what they were called. Will ask him again.

On further recollection, I recall the S&H green stamps as being something we got at the grocery store, not at school. I also remember mother teaching me to count ration stamps at the store when I was 5 or 6.
