Steve Irwin's Aussie Zoo in Las Vegas to open featuring crocodile wrestling

CROC hunter Steve Irwin's dream of opening an Aussie zoo in Las Vegas is to be realised, three years after his death.

Nevada officials say plans for an Australia-themed zoo in desert gaming mecca are back on the agenda.

Representatives for the Irwins met Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman last week to discuss resurrecting their proposal for a US Australia Zoo featuring crocodile wrestling.

"It looks like a great project with a crocodile-type enclosure where they would wrestle with the crocodiles and feed the crocodiles and have a real educational component to it and we're going to continue those discussions," Mr Goodman said at the weekend.

Irwin first floated the idea of a $40 million Las Vegas zoo showcasing Australian wildlife, including his famed croc wrestling show, in January 2004.

I miss Steve Irwin. I cried when I heard he’s been killed. His had a nice family.

Why wrestle the crocs? Why not just feed and care for them?

Where are they planning on putting this? No new hotels are being built except for City Center. The zoo we DO have is in a bad location and not really worth going to. I do think this is a great idea. Just not sure where it would go. Henderson maybe?

Croc wrestling...in Nevada? Whose idea was that?? Florida...or even Louisiana or Texas...would make much more sense, particularly given the fact that alligator wrestling is already a feature of Seminole Indian reservations in Florida.

Well, they won’t be running around wild...:) No purses and hoes - IMO, zoos and exhibits should be for promoting a positive attitude toward animals, and I don’t see where wrestling fits in.

.....Steve was entertaining, but his show had a gladiatorial aspect about it...he liked to go mano-a-mano with the animals and I feel that’s what ultimately killed him.

I was a fan of Steve’s as well. Such enthusiasm for life. After all the dangerous things he did on purpose but with skill, to be slayed by the stinger of an unseen ray was an especially sad way to die so young. I watched the televised public funeral. I recall his daughter bravely speaking about her daddy with such composure. Looking at my journal notes from that day, his friend John Stainton said “Steve was a true fair dinkum Aussie.” I also noted that “The Crocodiles Are Crying” and recall his saying “Crocs Rule!” and “Crikey!” as he’d often exclaim after a close call.

Oh yeah! His last venture turned out real well, right? Give it up folks. Sometimes you just gotta say no.

I think they can do what they want. I’m sure Bindi will eventually show up. That kid is just too cute.

But I’ll bet PETA will be yammering about it.

Not really.  What he was doing was a pretty low risk mundane event as far as nature encounters go.  If any of the other stuff he did do resulted in his death you would have a point, but this was just a freak event.  His wife put it best, it was like running with a pencil, you could die doing it but you're not supposed to.

I was a huge fan of Steve Irwin and his show. But I don’t ever remember seeing him wrestle a crocodile unless it was in connection with capturing, moving, tagging, measuring, etc. Can’t imagine that he’d subject the animals to such stress just for a show, which undoubtedly is what would happen in Las Vegas.
