3 Detroit marathon runners die Posted: 02:44 PM ET
(CNN) Three runners died Sunday during the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon in Detroit, Michigan, police told CNN.
All three deaths occurred between 9 and 9:20 a.m. ET, Second Deputy Chief John Roach said.
A man in his 60s fell and hit his head, Roach said. The cause of the fall was unknown. The man was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Two other men, aged 36 and 26, also collapsed during the race and were pronounced dead at the hospital, Roach said.
All three collapsed near the end of the race, he said.
The weather at the time was overcast, Roach said, with temperatures in the low 40s.
CNN's Chuck Johnston contributed to this report.

Geez...Detroit...when it's going bad, it's REALLY going bad...I've never heard of THREE runners dying in one race...sounds like a detective story...
To: jessduntno
Most likely they turned their head and saw what Detroit really was...and it was too much for them.

Wow, that is really weird. Sounds like a run of just bad luck.
With temps in the 40s, I wouldn’t think heat stroke would be a problem. Maybe with the two younger guys, the problem was dehydration (a person might be slower to recognize it because it doesn’t feel hot outside).
To: jessduntno
Marathons should be banned. We have too many senseless deaths in this country already.

I know a man in his 40's that ran marathons. He has 2 artificial knees now and does well to walk.
Everyone forgets that Pheidippides DIED when he finished the first Marathon! DUH?

Check the water. There may or may not have been a common denominator, but these folks should be checked out thoroughly.
There’s no reason for these folks to have that kind of problem in the 40s is there?
Runners, what say ye? Do you think this cool air intake could have dropped their core temperature? I would find that hard to believe, or others would have had the same problem.

Considering the origin of marathons why is this a surprise? ■The modern Athens Marathon commemorates the run of the soldier Pheidippides from a battlefield at the site of the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C. ■Legend has it that Pheidippides delivered the momentous message "Niki!" ("victory"), then collapsed and died.

I wouldn't be surprised if all three deaths were cardiac related...even with the younger ones.Sudden cardiac death in younger men is far from unheard of.

<I know a man in his 40’s that ran marathons. He has 2 artificial knees now and does well to walk.
I got arthritis in my hip in my early 50’s. While reading about arthritis around the web and from the Arthritis Foundation, I was surprised to find so much of the literature on replacement joints focused on runners. I mean relatively young people who had to have joint replacements of some kind. It was surprising, and eye-opening.
btw - from being in almost constant pain, barely able to walk, and thinking I’d need a hip replacement, to being pain free and walking 2-3 miles easily and running (a little on a treadmill) in my mid-50’s, I want to thank glucosamine chondroitin.

They should be.
Most marathon runners tend to be pretty careful about what they put in their bodies.
Three deaths seem like a very large number.
Most likely just a rare set of unrelated causes.

Ban marathons, Not really,
First, look who runs in Marathons.
Second, this all happened without a single shot being fired.
All in all, the only down side is ACORN has probably already registered them in three other states.

Marathons have become very popular and there are a lot of stupid people who think they can run one and are too lazy to do the right kind of training. So that can be deadly.
Also, there are a lot of people walking around with undiagnosed heart issues. Nothing like a 26 mile run to bring that to the surface - bam! For some reason, this seems to happen to men more than women (and the number of male to female runners is about equal).
This runner thinks it was just bad luck in Detroit.

It was much colder for the Chicago Marathon last week; below freezing start, 45,000 runners and no one died. Deaths are fairly rare at marathons, wherever they are. Generally one per race every five or ten years for the popular races. And I would imagine that there were far fewer runners in Detroit (maybe 5000), which unlike Chicago, Boston, NY or DC, is not a national/world race. So today’s death rate of 3 in one smaller race is quite striking.
