The anemic job market, an increase in sign-on bonuses and new attitudes towards military service are proving to be a winning combination for recruiting
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The nation's armed services wrapped up a record year for recruiting as a withering job market and bigger bonuses trumped two unpopular wars.
The Department of Defense said it met or exceeded recruitment goals for all branches of the armed services for fiscal year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, for the first time since 1973, when the draft ended and U.S. forces withdrew from Vietnam.
"We're pleased to report that for the first time since the advent of the all-volunteer force, all of the military components, active and reserve, meet their number as well as their quality goals," said Bill Carr, deputy undersecretary of Defense for Military Personnel Policy, at a Pentagon press conference on Tuesday. ..."
Carr acknowledged that the high level of unemployment in the civilian job market was helping the military draw recruits, and the earning power of recruits puts them in the top 10% of workers of commensurate age, education and experience.

I have a friend I play online with who got laid off so he is going back to the military.
When the Bamster defunds the military then where will everyone go?
Gee, a few years ago it was a negative that the unemployed were chosing military service. Now it’s great! What changed? /sarc
To be camp guards to watch over us people who have “incorrect” political opinions
Either to his civilian corps, or a re-education camp.
It will all depend on political orientation.

Some of those signing up may think they’ll be safe under Obama. After all, he’s promoting peace and the U.S. just being one of many nations, nothing special about us. We won’t have to fight any battles ever. The world will live in harmony at long last.
Sounds like we’ll be meeting the FoxNews staff soon. ;-)
He will do what Democrats have frequently done—get us in to a war for other-than-national security reasons.
Cool I get to bunk in Beck’s barracks! No way I can stand being in either Shep’s or BOR’s.
Hey, I’m not going over to their tent to make room for you!!!! Heh heh heh...
Maybe we can make the goons believe bunking with Beck is hell on earth and get assigned to that hut as “punishment”.
Could work... Hey, I’m all for it.
The navy began downsizing during the last administration. And with the economy in the crapper, nobody is getting out. This has made advancement rates a lot more competitive to the point where now the navy is forcing "dead weight" chiefs into retirement to open up some spots.
On the other hand, Beck’s hut may get the worst “special treatment”. Perhaps enduring that treatment would garner someone a ticket into the best afterlife.
The more things change...
Hopefully to DC to introduce the elites to rope and lamppost dancing!
:D
That depends where they are going. I can put you on a track that will likely get you put into front line combat. I can also put you on a track that will nearly guarantee you’ll never be deployed or go in harms way. It depends on the service branch and specialty.
From the posted CNN article:
“The nation’s armed services wrapped up a record year for recruiting as a withering job market and bigger bonuses trumped two unpopular wars.”
Of course the Communist News Network (CNN) just had to inject their own opinion into the story (”two unpopular wars”).
Beating back those that want to destroy us and/or our way of life is “unpopular”?
If you’re stationed on a ship, you don’t technically get the food allowance. My daughter is on the Lincoln and she is paid the allowance and then it is taken back according to her LES.
Well that makes sense, since the food is provided. However I was referring to the “free” medical care.
“Free”? I know of sailors being denied care at their duty stations. I know of sailors being told they aren’t going to be given certain meds because the Navy is out of money and the fiscal year just started. Navy dependents aren’t being given the flu vaccine because the Navy doesn’t have enough $$ to buy it. If someone is going into the service for the free medical, they might want to think twice. I also know of at least two sailors losing their orders because the Navy doesn’t have the money to physically transfer them.
It is certainly unpopular among the CNN staff...
I did that; got out of the .mil (first time) and went to College on the GI Bill.
Soon discovered higher education was in many respects a complete and utter waste of both time and money in current form, so went back in the .mil. Worked out great for me, paid off about 25k in student loans and other debt, and went debt free about 10 years ago or so.
A massive contraction of the military is supposed to happen in later 2011 and 2012, as Obama and the DIMS will HAVE to say he did something “Fiscally Responsible”... But he will have done the most irresponsible thing possible... Shrink the military.
I signed up in 1962 for sixty nine dollars a month and a sea bag full of uniforms which we had to pay to replace as they wore out. We had free health care (such as it was) and a bunk in a flophouse along with a free cafeteria that we called a galley. Who would have believed that the military would one day be the dream job for young Americans?
I was a Navy electronics technician, I couldn’t wait to get out but for those who stayed ETs could make Chief in seven years if they hit everything right. Some made E-9 well within a twenty year career. Now it probably won’t be possible to make E-9 without a friend or family at flag rank.
Don’t they have galleys on shore stations anymore? The only people who used to get food allowances were those who lived off base with family. The rest of us ate Navy chow.
