Some Russians rethink Alaska sale

Some Russians rethink Alaska sale142 years later, sale still a sore spot in Russian history, fuels nationalist rhetoric

By Pat Forgey | JUNEAU EMPIRE Is Russia having a case of seller's remorse for letting Alaska go for a pittance? And if so, why did it take so long?

It was today in 1867 that Russia formally let Alaska go, peddling its Russian America territory to the underdeveloped United States for $7.2 million to ensure that its rival European power, Great Britain, didn't get it.

Now, some Russian nationalists are talking of a return of Alaska to Russia, and blaming corruption and incompetence of various Russian governments over the years for the colony's loss.

SERIES!?!

SNIP - - Historian Andrei Znamenski of the University of Memphis has followed the growth of Russian nationalist interest in Alaska. He traces its origins back to a tongue-in-cheek 2005 column in the Washington Post suggesting Alaska would fit better with Russia than the United States. Even Alaskans might prefer Russian ownership, business columnist Steven Pearlstein wrote.

"With Alaska free from the political grip of environmentalists in Washington and Marin County, Alaskans would be able to drill and fish and clear-cut to their heart's content, unlocking value that could never be realized as long as they are in the United States," he wrote.

The rate he and the Dims are spending, we may have to sell Alaska. However, I suspect the Chicoms will out bid the Russkies.

This was the storyline of an episode of “Cory in the House” on the Disney channel.

In the show the incompetent president let Alaska go back to Russia, but in the end they had a DDR dance off and we got Alaska back.

Don’t tell Zero. Adjusted for inflation, it is $105,560,872.21 (2007 dollars) just for the cost of the sale. He may be tempted to sell it and create or save 10 more ‘shovel ready’ jobs.

Most likely the Russians and Chinese are thinking that they will patiently wait until Zero and the Dems have unilaterally deactivated our nuclear forces and totally destroyed our economy and then they will just walk in and take over. Those of us who have guns will have to fight to save our country, but we will likely have to thin down the fifth-columnist, liberal population a bit.

With Alaska free from the political grip of environmentalists in Washington and Marin County

While I'm as mad as anybody about what the environmentalists do to restrict the use of Alaska, I do NOT want Alaska to get the raping and pillaging of resources that the Russians like to do to their land. Alaska would be a toxic cesspool in 50 years.

Now, some Russian nationalists are talking of a return of Alaska to Russia, and blaming corruption and incompetence of various Russian governments over the years for the colony's loss.

At first I chuckled, then became quite serious.

As Marxist Obama and his fellow traveling buddies in Congress defund, disarm, dishoner, our military, and undermine its manifold mission...

...then the truly evil (and even evil wannabes) among the "world community" will seize the moment, and take from us (and our allies) whatever they can.

Watch for more of such false claims, they might just mount quickly.

.

Projecting weakness earned James Earl Carter the Iran hostage "crisis", cost us a very nice canal in Panama, and a few other "issues".

The world's "bad guys", I suspect, know now not to wait around when U.S. history sadly repeats the Carter projection of weakness.

they will just walk in and take over.

The trifecta of massive US Treasury debt, a collapsing US economy, and Treaty law organizations superior to the Constitution, will make this possible. It will become a criminal act internationally, for the US to use force, military or otherwise, to prevent foreign creditors from collecting on US debt.

Well why not? We’re looking to allow our Southwest to be overrun to the point that we lose it. Why shouldn’t Russia be emboldened to demand Alaska back?

I’m surprised the French haven’t demanded the Louisiana Purchase to be rescinded too.

While we’re at it, there must be some descendants of the Indians near Plymouth Rock still alive today. Shouldn’t we surrender the rest of our land to them?

This nation reminds me of an old castrated dog with it’s head down, tail between it’s legs, and shivering as it retreats to it’s favorite hiding place in abject terror.

As an Alaskan, what I have heard & read was this: It was a 100 year lease on resources. The Russkies were about to lose the territory to other countrys and Czar stationed some of his Navy in San FRan harbor to help Lincoln out during civil war. That's what I believe occurred. None of it matters anyway, too many Americans armed to the teeth here now. I always figured Obama might sell Calif to chicoms inorder to keep his social spending going.

We have all kinds of Russkies here already, and even those guys don't want to go back to the way it was in their original homeland. Most hate Obama, but always remind me that Russia wasn't all bad either but they ain't going back, ha. One Russian guy & his wife that I know, came here from Siberia. They just recently becmae citizens, and they are very conservative; good people; not the evil reds.

I was waiting for this to happen ...

I knew that in the rising and resurgent Russia, that it would happen.

If we didn’t ship hundreds of billions of dollars overseas weekly, this wouldn’t happen.

Coal? Nuclear? Synthetic? I have seen, here and elsewhere, many innovative plans and very good suggestions, but no politicians or MSM ever picks up on them or voices their concerns or take action ... so we are rapidly going to hell in a hand basket.

Watch out.

Here come Russia and China.

And we have no F-22 to hold them back.

Thanks Big O.

Remember this TV movie on NBC in 1982?

Soviet paratroopers drop into Alaska to sabotage the oil pipeline in retaliation against a United States grain embargo. A skirmish occurs at a pumping station, lightly defended by Col. Jake Caffey (David Soul) and a National Guard recon unit. A stalemate ensues while the possibility of World War III hangs in the balance. The danger escalates as the Russian leaders (Brian Keith and Robert Prosky) and the American President (Rock Hudson) play a cat-and-mouse game.

The was stupid to the extreme.

IF, OTOH, the russkis had done such a thing, the Guard has Eskimo Scouts. Having worked directly with these ANG, I have no doubt that anyone that was stupid enuf to try something like that outside of an urban area (MOUT) would quickly find just how “peaceful” Eskimos really are.

The article does make a good point about how locals are restrained from using the land to make a living....

Dragging Christianity back to the Muslim age with regards to treatment of women, a fringe cult organization and following, an overly-simplistic view of the Bible to their ends, an organization structure mirroring communist cells, and so on.

The results are not all bad, but the way they do it is scary.

BO might not stop them, but someone like Ronald Reagan would.

I don't think RR would have to, he would not allow the massive over extension of US Treasury debt, and would use the veto to enforce it.

Additionally he would stimulate the economy and bring in more revenue with tax cuts. The US would be solvent and immune from treaty court action.

About the only serious mistake RR made was the amnesty, but then no President after RR would enforce the law, so we don't know for sure if it would have been the last amnesty.
