SNL Obama opener worst in show's history(vanity)

Posted on 10/17/2009 8:44:11 PM PDT by jeltz25

That sketch was the worst in the history of the program, by far.

Armisen is so awful and unfunny they've given up on him and brought in a wrestler who hasn't been relevant in ten years. Who's next? Stone Cold?

Armisen doesn't even try to imitate Obama beyond some halting speech pattern. He was on the show for 5 yrs and never played a black guy before Obama. You're telling me SNL can't find one black guy out there in the whole country?

Moreover, they had the Rock who's perfectly capable of speaking english do some Tonto-esque accent that was blatantly racist towards Indians and completely stupid. "Me no want this" and "Me no like that". Then they have the President commit acts of violence and assault people in the Oval Office, about to hit a woman before Biden walks in.

The audience didn't really laught at all. Simply awful. Embarassing. A whole staff of writers and this is the best they can do? I suspect their ratings will be going down the tubes, much like 30 Rock.

Very lame.
I don’t know why they can’t get the guy who has done Obama on Leno - he was really good and it’s the same (lame) network.

What’s with the Obama imitator? He’s got the face OK, but his manner isn’t even in the ballpark. It’s like they KNOW they SORTA have to imitate the guy, but they don’t dare make it funny and convincing, like they do (cruelly, even) for Sarah.

He throws in an “uhh” or two, and then just speaks normally.

TOTALLY STUPID.

Besides one of two clips, I haven’t watched for over a decade, really.

To me the golden age was Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscapo....after that? Who the hell was on there —don’t ask me...!

the “Russia from my house” lying disgrace.

That part was satire and acceptable imo. What wasn't acceptable was the MSM, liberals, and morons promoting it as if Sarah Palin actually said it, instead of Tina Fey.

When they still had Sandler, Farley, Hartman and Spade, it was still good. After they left, it went to crap.

It can’t be political. Phil Hartman and Darrell Hammond were great as Clinton and even Amy Poehler was very good as the other Clinton. Hammond skewered Al Gore and those debate sketches really hurt him. So they’ve shown they can make fun of democrats and liberals. It’s like they don’t even want to try. I can’t ever recall seeing someone get replaced a minute into a sketch. Armisen doesn’t even try. His impression is different from week to week. I have a feeling their ratings will continue to sag.

SNL has been a zombie show for years & years. It’s stupid, mean, embarrassing and ugly. Some network executive sobering up and shooting it in the head & putting it (and us) out of its/our misery would be doing it, and America, a huge favor.

I just watched Jody Foster put a number of holes in two `gangstas’/thugs w/ a 9mm Kahr. Now *that’s* entertainment!

You could say the same about the Buck-Toothed Moron (TM Mark Levin) Letterman’s show too. Apparently enough people watch both where they can still turn a buck. The same people that cheer when the host is fessing up to gross sexual misconduct, I guess.

I prefer “gap-toothed freak” but I say potato, he says potahto.
There’s no excuse for laughing at crap like SNL and Letterman after you have started paying taxes and raising children.
I see Letterman crashing and off the air before the year is out. Like Air America. Kids today are smarter than they were in the `70s and `80s, or at least they’re getting an education now from Zero, Dave, and the pathetic lefty goons at SNL.

The pickin’s have been slim and the humor since then has been mean and lame.

The last SNL I watched, with the exception of the Sarah Palin appearances, was the one with Dana Carvey as Bush Sr., on a hunting trip with GWB; the assassination joke at the center of it made me turn off the TV in disgust.

SNL has been dead to me for years.

Internet has some buzz about Armisen's lousy imitation (which he has done fairly well in the past):

"There has been a rumor floating around that Fred Armisen is intentionally, perhaps at the behest of the NBC powers-that-be, making his Obama impersonation as inaccurate and unfunny as possible"

"It’d be interesting to know why Armisen has decided to stop imitating Obama’s speech pattern, especially since he was doing it in the past and had received praise for nailing it pretty well. Would love to see him, or someone at SNL, get asked about this."

"I think it's pretty easy to prove they're dumbing it down, intentionally or by accident. Just go back and watch some of Armisen's early portrayals of Obama during the campaign. Much more authentic, much more funny. Put them side by side and there's no question that something funky is going on."

Landshark! I saw where Jon Stewart joked about CNN (I think) investigating a SNL skit where they showed Bambi hadn’t accomplished anything. He said something like, Really, you investigated a comedy skit? What’s next, an investigation on whether Land Sharks really deliver candy grams?

That was my guess from the last opening skit, where they mocked Obama for not doing anything. It looked like armisen knew he had to DO the skit to keep his job, but he refused to do it well, because he disagreed with it.

“A whole staff of writers and this is the best they can do?”

Certainly SNL has access to people who could get his voice patterns down the way Paul Shanklin does. SNL’s problem is that with Obama, the material at hand presents vast possibilities for devastating satire that any attempt at real humor is going to anger the administration and the network front office. So they settle for “cute” humor, the way “comedians” like Vaughn Meador did in JFK’s time.

But Obama and his team of bizarre crackpots that is the subject here, not JFK. There are endless opportunities for good belly laughs. So when SNL settles for giggles instead, its as if they have “gutless” stamped on their foreheads.
