We are a nation fully settled by government. The terrain ahead is both crowded and costly.
People who oppose a health-care overhaul are not in love with insurance companies. They're not even in love with the status quo. Everyone knows the jerry-built system of the past half-century has weak points. They just don't think the current plan will shore them up. They think the plan would create new weak points and widen old ones. They think this because they have brains.
But even that doesn't get to the real subtext of the opposition. Yes, the timing is wrong—we have other, more urgent crises to face, and an exploding deficit. And yes, a big change in a huge economic sector during economic crisis is looking for trouble.
But a big part of opposition to the health-care plan is a sense of historical context. People actually have a sense of the history they're living in and the history their country has recently lived through. They understand the moment we're in.

There is a new frontier, Peggy. It will free us from the shackles of FDR’s raw deal (socialist security) to LBJ’s great socialism (medicare/medicaid) to the current lightweight-socialist in the house and every other internal enemy...before they destroy us.
I happen to think the title and first sentence sum things up nicely.

Grim times for El Presidente, he has been in a funk ever since the war started. The fall of the west coast was the last straw, things are getting desperate, there is no more fresh citrus fruit.
It looks like they are closing in, we still control most of the North East and some major cities are loyal although cut off from us. They seem to get closer and closer each day, the front moves back and forth several times a day, mosly forth towards us.

Washington DC is beseiged. The water and power are turned off, we control no more media outlets. There are still loyal enclaves but they too are surrounded and food has run out in many of them.

I am simply worn out. The rebels have entered DC proper waving those horrible 50-star flags. Those were banned over a year ago for the ones with Obama’s face in the field of blue. The traitors have been executing journalists, professors and union leaders all over the country and now they are just a few miles away. Things look mighty grim.

I think I have decided to become a conservative again. I must read those Coulter, Levin and Steyn books I hid under the floorboards. I know they were banned just before the war started but I hid them. Just in case. Maybe they’ll take me back?

I get the sense that Peggy isn’t opposed to National Healthcare philosophically. Like other soft Republicans she can be persuaded if the numbers are cooked to her liking.
I don’t have time, but someone should juxtapose her slobbery pro-Bush columns from 2003ish, when Bush was fairly popular, with her anti-Bush columns from 3 or 4 years later, when Bush had sunk some. Peggy won’t come out looking especially principled in it...
