The Battle Between the White House and Fox News
New York Times ^

Posted on 10/17/2009 4:56:40 PM PDT by DavidAccord

On the official White House Web site, a blog called Reality Check provides a running tally of transgressions by Fox News. It ends with this: “For even more Fox lies, check out the latest ‘Truth-O-Meter’ feature from Politifact that debunks a false claim about a White House staffer that continues to be repeated by Glenn Beck and others on the network.”

People who work in political communications have pointed out that it is a principle of power dynamics to “punch up “ — that is, to take on bigger foes, not smaller ones. A blog on the White House Web site that uses a “truth-o-meter” against a particular cable news network would not seem to qualify. As it is, Reality Check sounds a bit like the blog of some unemployed guy living in his parents’ basement, not an official communiqué from Pennsylvania Avenue.

The American presidency was conceived as a corrective to the royals, but trading punches with cable shouters seems a bit too common. Perhaps it’s time to restore a little imperiousness to the relationship.

Nixon had an enemies list and The Left thought it was Hitler like to have one.

Guess they don't consider an "enemies list" when they have one.

Hi, Newbie. Welcome to FR. And thanks for more proof that the NYT is worthy of wrapping my fish for the garbage. For instance, this from the last paragraph: "The American presidency was conceived as a corrective to the royals, but trading punches with cable shouters seems a bit too common. Perhaps it’s time to restore a little imperiousness to the relationship."

That's about all we had from the Obama administration; imperiousness over their communist takeover.

Yeah, THAT's the ticket.

Let's make the Grand Kenyan a little more imperious....

I think what best exposes this whole charade is when CNN did a “fact check” on a Saturday Night Live comdey routine that poked fun at Obama. Give me a break! What next, a fact-check on Jay Leno? If you want to see the “fact check” red dial go off the chart do one on Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow!

For the first time in history, our government is targeting a group of private citizens who are reporting the news by name.

And they’re using YOUR tax dollars to do it.

The lightweight-socialist, propagandists-created, con-man tosses his lackeys out to engage in the fray, yet they (propagandists) never ask about who instructed the lackeys. Witness this article by propagandist David Carr without delving into Dunn’s background or sourcing who gave her the marching orders.

I gave up the NYT (after 50 years or so) specifically because the got so much stuff wrong. I would give up Fox News (which I don't really watch - FR is so much better!) or Beck or Limbaugh if they said things which were obviously contradicted by facts I saw elsewhere. But so far, this has not been the case.

Agreed.

That the White House is fighting with Fox News tells me that the WH is concerned about Fox News' influence over voters.

That the WH has decided to get down in the gutter with all the other nasty guys does not surprise me one bit. Name calling and back and forth, both hallmarks of the president that campaigns 24/7.

I really think that above all else, obama cannot stand to be ridiculed, and it’s starting to come at him from all directions now.

Wonder how the melt down will look. In my mind I picture poking a snake with a stick, and eventually it strikes back with deadly intent. Maybe not accuracy, but intent.

If that so-called "false claim" were about a Republican, the NYT would've printed it anyway. mmm mmm mmm

Hey, but the biggest lie of them all is that Obama is eligible to be POTUS. That one just takes the cake!

I would think it would be a bit embarrassing for the NYT to have to do a report of the White House vs Fox News. One would think they would want their own “Truth Meter”; not simply talk about the White House's version. No wonder they're going broke.

Oh, I don’t hate him. I just want libs to look in the mirror. I want them to see the face of the man they vilified looking back at them and oops! realize obama’s trying to stifle dissent, shut down free speech and attacking a media outlet. Some of the very same things they said they hated Nixon for.

LOL... Truth O Meter! Beck is likely to add that as well to his arsenal of hilarious mocking of the actions of the White House.

The truth o meter would be very funny on the TV show!

However...I would encourage anyone who has not tuned in to Glenn’s radio show - to do so. You will be hooked on one of the most entertaining - informative radio shows on the air today. He’s funny and his side kick and Stew are also good for many laughs.

Actually, I thought it was quite an interesting article. The New York Times is basically telling Obama to back off against Fox News Channel.

From that standpoint alone, I'll agree. But they do so in their typical backhanded way. Consider this: "Until this point, the conflict had been mostly a one-sided affair, with Fox News hosts promoting tax day 'tea parties'"; Fox News didn't 'promote' tea parties', they reported them. The NYT did not (until forced to acknowledge them, and then somewhat after the fact), much to their discredit.

"During the health care debate, Fox News has put a megaphone to opponents, some of whom have advanced far-fetched theories about the impact of reform." Again, Fox News reported valid information about health care reform, something the NYT prefers to gloss over if not ignore. The NYT never clarifies what segments of the health care reform legislation, as reported by Fox News, was wrongly reported, misquoted, or erroneous.

"But Fox News, as many have pointed out, is not in the access business. They are in the agitation business." No, Fox News is in the NEWS business, and they do a far fairer job of it than the NYT. But, the NYT is showing their pique in this statement, and as they acknowledge up article, Fox News has had a 20% increase in viewership while the NYT is bleeding subscriptions.

As I stated in my post, we've had 'imperiousness' since Obama came to office. The NYT believes we need more? To me that smacks of dictatorship.

He should have said:

“Perhaps it’s time to restore a little dignity to the relationship.”

but he didn’t because the NY Times is a liberal newspaper.

Still, it is criticism of Obama’s thuggish tactics . .
