(As you read the article, remember it comes from the Dem mindset that GPS causes accidents, guns kill people, etc.)
ALBANY, N.Y. New York state wants to crack down on truckers who rely on satellite devices to direct them onto faster but prohibited routes and end up crashing into overpasses that are too low for their rigs.
Gov. David Paterson on Wednesday proposed penalties including jail time and confiscation of trucks to come down on drivers who use GPS global positioning systems to take more hazardous routes and end up striking bridges.
In New York, a truckers' group called the proposal unfair and unwarranted.
Karin Kennett of the New York State Motor Truck Association said "requiring all trucks in the state that are using GPS to buy an enhanced device goes too far."
"It places an unfair and unwarranted financial burden on every law-abiding trucking company doing business anywhere in New York at a time when our state claims to be trying to improve our business climate," Kennett said.
"GPS is the heart of it," one NY official said, "Absolutely ... other states will be looking at Gov. Paterson's issue."
"This sort of culture of just following the GPS and almost ignoring the road signs has created this public hazard," Paterson told reporters.
"It's only a matter of time before someone is killed or a truck carrying chemicals or explosives hits a bridge," he said.
The bill would increase penalties for illegally using parkways and require all large commercial trucks to use GPS devices that route them away from restricted roads. It would also stick trucking companies or their insurance carriers with the bill for repairs and cleanup after bridge strikes.
The bill could hit the Legislature as early as January.

Every bridge or underpass has a height limit sign. All truckers have to know is the height of their truck. If Number A is less than Number B, stop, go another way.
This is not driven by GPS. Truckers have had map books for 100 years, and yes, shortcuts were shown on them long before GPS was invented.
This is all just a huge scam to make truckers buy some very expensive new GPS, the manufacturer of which is undoubtably paying off the Dems.
Dem slogan: "Regulate everything, so you can tax it, and get payoffs too."
Can't this idiot as governor see what he is creating?
If you get a chance, please stop by the FReepathon thread and give it a bump. If you havent donated something yet, please give it some thought...
Thanks!
The problem is that there is no warning at the entrance to the highway or parkway. There should be a device at the entrance to stop the trucks before they enter. Such an easy solution.
Well, the man has two strikes against him right from the start. First, he's an idiot Dem as you say. Secondly, he's virtually blind (no sight in one eye and limited vision in the other). So no, he can't see, either politically or visually, what the issue is. Perfect for being head-of-state for New York, if you're a Dem I mean...
Let’s see now, what will $399 BUY?
Or, we could give dimocraps ten trillion dollars....
FORMER TRUCKER.
Every truck(ok, 99.9999999%) has in the cab a book called “LOw Clearance”.. it lists EVERY Bridge, overpass, train trestle, etc that has a vertical clearance of 13’6” or LESS.
ALL overpasses in NY are marked 1 FOOT LESS than actual Measurements.
Paterson... stuff your bridges up your ...
There are in Arizona. All the driver has to do is pay attention.

WorldNav 5100 Portable Truck GPS - 5” Screen WorldNav 5100 Portable GPS based on TeleType’s award winning navigation product line. This advanced touch screen display offers a comfortable screen viewing size of 5” (measured diagonally) and is specifically designed for truck drivers, bus drivers, and RV’ers. This GPS insures that routes will follow roads that are suitable for truck travel, and yet the commercial driver can rely on the routing as it takes into account commercial truck restrictions such as bridge heights and clearances, load limits, and one-way road designations. The WorldNav Truck GPS can also be configured for Hazmat loads. While a typical truck configuration would be 13’6” height, 80,000 lb weight, and 53’ length, you can easily change the settings for precision routing based on the exact characteristics of the vehicle. For example, you can change the characteristics to be 126” and 50,000 lb weight, or even 120,000 lb weight and 100 feet height. TeleType offers the only solution which allows you to customize your truck characteristics with such flexibility and display the maps based on vehicle characteristics. Easily change the specifications to suit your truck including oversized and overweight vehicles. Optional updates are available at least twice per year. TeleType offers innovative engineering and has resulted in patented technology.
Maybe they should dig a trench for the road under each bridge that has been crashed into so they meet the height standards.
“Can’t this idiot as governor see what he is creating?”
No, actually, he is legally blind.
Then you've heard this:
A trucker misses the turn-off before the low bridge and gets stuck under it. Cars are backed up for miles.
Finally, a police car pulls up. The cop gets out of his car and walks around to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, "Got stuck huh?"
The truck driver says, "No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of fuel."
How can they get away with that?!
GPS devices do not drive vehicles.
It's a safety measure. The actual distance can vary depending upon ambient temperature, snow on the road, repaving, etc.

It seems to me that the truckers could read signs that warn of a low clearance.
My point made perfectly.
**The truck driver says, “No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of fuel.”**
Mine was .. delivering this bridge but I can’t seem to find the ADDRESS!!
so the road signs and bridge signs are lies? lol. govt at wrk
“Can’t this idiot as governor see what he is creating?”
OWCH!
**It’s a safety measure.**
Actually, they’re too dayumed CHEAP to change the SIGN after they repaved, fixed a Pothole.. paved over the raccoon, etc.
That’s MORONIC.
In other words, Patterson wants a law against stupid. Good luck with that.
What if the made all bridges 14 ft clearance. Oh that would be too hard....
**Patterson wants a law against stupid.**
Well, it will EMPTY OUT ALBANY, pretty damn QUICK!!!
What if the made all bridges 14 ft clearance. Oh that would be too hard....
The issue comes down to speed. If the expressways were better, meaning more lanes, higher posted speed limits, and fewer speed traps and weigh stations, the truckers would stay on the interstates and not use GPS to cut time and reduce the citation hazard. Remember speed traps are “revenue enhancement traps”
The NYS Thruway (I-90 & 87) is a nighmare. Two lanes, lots of traffic and many police....no thanks. I’ll chance it on a two lane.
There needs to be no warning. No need to re-invent the wheel. No need for new regulations. We do have a pretty great system in place already. States publish this information and map companies use it in making their maps. Evey road in America is marked on a trucker’s map, as having restrictions, or not. In addition, there is plentiful, inexpensive, trucking aware, software on the market already. All of it, in current versions, interfaces with a standard GPS unit. Even the non trucking software can be modified by the user adding notes and/or warnings along a road or a complete route.
There is NO legitimate excuse to hit a bridge.
As well, in the front few pages of every Rand McNally Trucking Atlas map book, is a table of all States and their individual restrictions, height, weight, length, width, bridge capacities, etc. and laws that differ from Federal Reg.s, and addresses and phone numbers to contact if in doubt.
Some Cities, such as Chicago, even have special 800 numbers for truckers to call for safe directions.
The reasons bridges get hit is because something has changed, i.e. road construction that brings the road surface higher, a new bridge was built to replace the old one, a pedestrian bridge was added (and they, generally, need not be entered in the database), and, mostly, n00b drivers.
There are, practically speaking, no “real” truckers on the road any longer. They’ve been replaced by the “new breed” of steering wheel holders. The “real” ones that are left are looking for a new profession, or retirement.
He's a democrat, right?
His shoe size fits his foot then.
Blaming the dumb GPS! As usual, the wackos blame the THING, not the person. Liberals never make people take responsibility for their actions. Blame the thing. Sue the manufacturer.
Judging from what I’ve seen with GPS’s, the damn things are really stupid! Following them blindly is really dumb! People have got to use some intelligence when using the accursed things!
ALL TRUCKS OVER 53’ IN LENGTH ARE REQUIRED TO NOW HAVE A PERMIT AND ARE ROUTED BY THE NY CITY AND STATE DOT, THEY PICK YOUR ROUTE, IF YOU DIVIATED FROM IT YOU ARE FINED BIG TIME, GUESS WHO SENDS THE TRUCKS ON PARKWAYS AND TO BRIDGES LESS THAT 12’6”....THATS RIGHT THE STATE, SAME IN NEW JERSEY.
Have you sent that link to the Gov and his staff?
More time, more Fuel, higher costs for transportation,, higher costs at the MARKET. Cost of living in NY is so low that another price increase is NO PROBLEM... geez.
To follow what NY wants to do.. for me to get home would take 2 hours,12 Gallons of Fuel.. and I could STILL get a ticket for being on an Illegal road.
LOL. Those have long since been discarded. I haven’t seen one in many years.
First 20 or so pages of Rand-McNally has all of that and more.
Take the tools away from the people that the people produced in the first place and blame the people for being ingenious enough that produced them.
Kinda' unconstitutional isn't it?
Not exactly. All truck/trailer combination over 75’ require permitting. Trailers exceeding 53’ can get a toll road only permit. As well, on the East West tollway (I-90) Super doubles (tractor w/ 2 48’ trailers) are legal.
They should require every trucker to do as J.B. Hunt does.
Go under low bridges at night. That way no one sees them. LOL
I thought their shoe size was the same as their IQ.
I would agree with that. There is no excuse for not knowing the overhead heights of bridges and overpasses on your route.
Bottom line...the shoe fits.
“Stand up and take a bow! Let em see ya!”
“Have you sent that link to the Gov and his staff?”
The Gov would never read it...hmmmmmph...
So everyone knows that you can ignore the height signs, since they are wrong.
Yes, but in New York state, low clearance signs indicated clearance from curb level back in the day (perhaps it has changed since I last drove thru the state) but my 13’6” requirement to clear was never marked properly, so, an underpass was a puckering experience each time I had to clear one. HOWEVER !! GPS or No, it is still up to the driver to slow and test his clearance before proceeding.
Tempting...
**ALL overpasses in NY are marked 1 FOOT LESS than actual Measurements.**
**So everyone knows that you can ignore the height signs, since they are wrong.**
In order to go from A to B.. you must either be a LIBERAL who believes the article or you are a RON PAUL LIBTARD.
HOW EFFING STUPID CAN YOU BE TO SAY IGNORE?????
Did you mean the pun on Gov. Patterson? if so, congrats and very subtle.
....Bob
I am not amused. I’ve heard them all, twice. JB and the boys just keep on rollin’ while the rest are parked with a for sale sign in the window.
There are many units that are 'chopped and channeled' by those who did...8^)
