In the wake of the news that radio host Rush Limbaugh was hoping to buy a chunk of the St. Louis Rams, Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote a column containing the now-infamous quote, supposedly from Limbaugh, regarding the notion that slavery "had its merits."
We first became aware of the quote not from perusing the copy of the Post-Dispatch that arrives in our mailbox every morning in West Virginia, but because Limbaugh mentioned the issue during the Monday broadcast of his radio show. (Indeed, if Limbaugh had never talked about the quotes on his radio show, we and likely many others would have never even known about the issue.)
When posting on the matter on Monday, we made it clear that Limbaugh contends he never said the words. (The next day, he supplied a more forceful denial; the practical effect was that even more people became aware of the allegedly false quotes.)
But now the toothpaste is being squeezed back into the tube by the Post-Dispatch. In an Editor's Note published today, the newspaper says that the quote in question "cannot be verified, and its use did not meet the Post-Dispatch's standards for sourcing."
The Post-Dispatch also points out that the source of the quote was Jack Huberman's 2006 book, 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America. "The book provided no details about the origin of the quote," the Editor's Note explains. "When contacted by the Post-Dispatch, Huberman said that he had a source for the quote but declined to reveal it on advice of counsel. The book's publisher, Nation Books, did not return calls to the Post-Dispatch."
(Huberman's response suggests pretty strongly to us that he never actually heard Limbaugh say the words on the air, or in any other setting.)

Mike Florio denies being a pedophile, but it is our duty to report there are unsourced internet rumors that....
Stop watching football and start getting involved in Tea Parties. Your very life may depend on it.
Done. And a BTT as well.
Fascist Dums always throw out false statements. They figure by the time the truth catches up, the damage has been done. RUSH should be sueing the chit out of these people SLPD, and MSNBC, and if the NFL used this........SUE the B.
“Dumb” Rush just one upped the left with one hand tied behind his back. PC just got bitch slapped by libel and slander law. It’s PC’s Waterloo.

I am boycotting.
I say ENOUGH of bad behavior left wingers getting everything they want and mainstream Americans get shafted.
ENOUGH POP CULTURE, SAVE AMERICAN CULTURE.
According to this story, it’s all Rush’s fault. If he hadn’t tried to defend himself over this defamation, nothing bad would have happened.
Some apology, bring on the lawsuit!
Hometown teams apply. Racists stances by the parent will not be allowed. Boycott all of them.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! So he blames Rush for journalists reporting lies. Wow!
Oh, and....Goodell is a pussy. And Checketts is a coward.
Send an email to the team of your choice and tell them to pound sand. Back it up as well.
I agree. Turn off the NFL. Turn on the college games!
“cannot be verified, and its use did not meet the Post-Dispatch’s standards for sourcing.”
Reminiscent of W’s being “quoted” as saying he was chosen by God to be President...instead of what he said, which was, according to James Robison, in a telephone call in 1999, Bush told him, I feel like God wants me to run for president.
Not quite the same...but they sure do love to assassinate characters by lying about them.
Don’t boycott the NFL... that’s just stupid...
Agreed. Rush should file several lawsuits, and I do believe he mentioned that was being considered during his show late last week.
Boycott watching the NFL on NBC, going to games or playing that damn fantasy BS football.
College football is better anyway.
I would not call Goodell a race baiting thug, but I don’t intend to have anything to do with the NFL until Goodell is disciplined.
CFB=excitement
If Limbaugh had never talked about the false quotes the editor wouldn’t be shaking in his boots. He has to apologize. He’s facing a very nasty libel suit from someone who can take his paper to the cleaners.
Perhaps we can provide some unsourced quotes from Obama, Pelosi, Reid, et al.
Apparently it did. They ran with it.
The drive-by media got caught--Now they're claiming they were just cleaning their gun when they took a shot at Limbaugh.
You are very wrong. The trouble started when he confirmed that rumors that he was involved with a group that was bidding on a team. After that is when the lefty liars came out against him. He defended himself after he started getting smeared by the left wing media.
Typical smears coming from the Left.
My point is that all the thug talk is likely coming from people who did not like nor watch the NFL in the first place. Such people don’t really count in this.
My beef is with Goodell saying that someone with views similar to mine is divisive for his views and spech alone. I wont be watching from now on and I did watch before.
It’s stupid Not to boycott the NFL.. and let the Left continue to walk all over over rights.
I can’t boycott what I never watched. As long as they’re playing football, I’m not watching, but I’m with you in spirit.
"Yet another cowardly post by the editors. Own it folks and admit you were wrong, apologize (one the front page) and let Burwell have his just desserts whatever it is per your internal standards.
I'm no journalist and even I know he, along with a bunch of other MSM pontificators, broke the "rules" of journalism of sourcing. He was blinded by his own hate of someone with whom he disagrees and let his emotions control him and it clouded his judgment in writing his articles.
Having said this, let's stir the pot. I'm no lawyer and don't know if this is even possible, butIt's about time that accountability is shown to those who decide to knowingly act like fools based on individual hate and disagreement of another person's thoughts and beliefs.
The whole of St. Louis lost big this week based on the writings of a select few who had a selfish vendetta, based on lies don't forget, to brandish without thinking of the bigger picture of what a St. Louis economy will look like without the Rams around (greater unemployment, fewer tax revenues, loss of stature, etc...). It would be devastating to the region and these folks put their own self interest above all others. True hate was shown this week and now St. Louis just may have been gravely hurt by it. Only time will tell."
I realize it can be difficult to boycott games - season tickets already purchased, tickets been in the family for decades if not generations etc.
BUT, it ain’t that hard to stop buying t-shirts, sweatshirts, ball caps, coozies etc. Owners will notice that and it’s no hardship for fans at all.
One way that could help is that anytime the product in the stores make the claim that they are the “official product of the NFL” or specific team then walk right on by and buy their competitor.
Mike Florio denies being a pedophile, but it is our duty to report there are unsourced internet rumors that....
Exactly. I know Mike Florio is denying being a pedophile, and we can’t verify his denial, but ...
I am so damned sick of these people!
“Dont boycott the NFL... thats just stupid.”
No, it’s a logical answer to Roger Goodell’s ill-considered comments.
Once the NFL wisely fires Roger, I’ll watch them again.
No retraction.
No apology.
Rush should sue for Libel and slander until he owns all of the MSM. Who needs a stinking sports team.
“I would encourage everyone to boycott the NFL”
Being in St. Louis, I won’t miss the NFL very much at all.

Journalism has codes of ethics and all that good stuff - but if you actually want to predict journalism's behavior you should assume that they are all just window dressing and that journalism is a monopoly unified by the AP which operates strictly in its own self interest.Journalism's "objectivity" is a parody of the real thing.
And yet they ran it without that verification, only looking into it after they defamed a man. Imagine how they'd do the same for Ma or Pa Front Porch? And further, taking the source from a 1 sided "book" of obvious political bias also get past an Editor?
Of course the paper could have sourced this BS before they printed it. They think they have won, tell a lie, get Rush bounced and then retract, trying to avert a lawsuit. Well, I hope Rush's lawyers, who are working on the evidence right now, go ahead and sue the crap out of all these people.
I really had to laugh at that. They are so pathetic.
