A press release and automated calls to voters by Seattle mayoral candidate Mike McGinn’s campaign, accusing opponent Joe Mallahan of wanting to “make it legal to bring loaded firearms to playgrounds, pools, and community centers,” was touching off dueling statements of lying and waffling Friday evening.

And in response to a challenge from McGinn asking Mallahan to say whether he would defend in court a new ban on firearms in Seattle parks, community centers and other facilities where children might be present, Mallahan spokeswoman Charla Neuman was non-committal.

Try as I might, I simply cannot picture someone who has decided to shoot and kill another person saying to themselves, “Uh oh, better rethink that and wait until they’re out of the park. Wouldn’t want carrying a weapon in a park added to the charge of first degree murder!”

And even if it DID happen that way, and the murderer WAS deterred from taking a weapon into the park, the murder is still going to take place someplace. Just not in the park. My Mom would have called that winning the battle, but losing the war!

What WILL work though is for the system to be such that anyone who thinks about killing another is given pause by the realization that the consequences of killing, are more negative than positive. Granted, it won’t work in every case, there will still be murders, but it will sure do a lot more to cut down the numbers than making it illegal to have a gun in a park. Gonna ban knives, too? How ‘bout baseball bats, and fists, etc.

McGinn, you ignorant slut...

AG Rob McKenna has already CONFIRMED for Nickels that the ban is unconstitutional per the WA State Constitution. Cities cannot regulate firearms; that is reserved to the State alone.

Oh, and McGinn, that would also apply to whoever follows up Nickels in the role of Seattle nannymayor.

If I was Mallahan I'd gladly own up to the "charge" leveled by McGinn and make sure and state "I am going along with the Washington State Constitution, the opinion of the State's courts, and the opinion of the State's Attorney General, Rob McKenna, in supporting the rights of citizens to bear arms in all parks".

But Mallahan won't, he'll wimp out and say "well, I don't like guns either, they are evil but mean Rob McKenna will force me to accept them anyway"...
