Why the Swiss Are Afraid of Minarets
Der Speigel ^ | 13 October 2009 | Michael Soukup

A poster featuring a Muslim woman in a chador surrounded by minaret towers that resemble missiles is causing outrage in Switzerland ahead of a referendum next month on whether to ban mosques from having minarets. The campaign is proving so controversial that even some die-hard members of the country's far right are uncomfortable with it.

Wangen bei Olten has already been lost. The small Swiss municipality at the foot of the Jura Mountains has become home to a minaret.

The Christians in the village fought hard to prevent it -- they collected signatures, lodged official complaints, spoke publicly against it and even the local Catholic and evangelical communities registered their opposition.

But nothing worked. Switzerland's highest court approved the building plans of the local Turkish cultural association and now a six meter (20 foot) tall minaret provides graphic proof of the victory won by the Olten Türk Kültür Ocagi.

"The minaret is only the first step," Daniel Zingg warns in appearances across the country. The former television repairman is a member of the Federal Democratic Union (EDU), a Christian party on the far right of Switzerland's political spectrum. Zingg, 53, sees minarets as symbols of Muslim victories over newly conquered lands -- as precursors to the introduction of Islamic Shariah law.

How times have changed in Switzerland. In the 1960s and 70s, politicians in Zürich and Geneva welcomed the construction of two mosques as symbols of the country's sophistication and open-mindedness. Nowadays, Switzerland's anti-minaret activists like to quote Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "Minarets are our bayonets," he said. "The domes are our helmets, the mosques our barracks and the believers our army."

There is going to be a day that the Europeans are going to wake up and rue the day they ever allowed Muslims in. They will finally realize that those people they deemed “extremist” were right, and all that talk of “tolerance” and “diversity” was a one way street. Of course, it will be too late then, and their Dhimmi status irreversible.

What are you crowing about??

as once free american, our current existence is pretty much same as dhimmi status.

They won’t notice the gradual shift anymore than we did.

“Of course, it will be too late then, and their Dhimmi status irreversible.”

Uhhh - consider what the French did on St. Bart’s Day. The statists (Roman Catholic and Royalists) used the French military and mobs to kill slightly over 100,000 French Protestants.

When the French tire of Muslim abuses, they will deal with them as they did the French Protestants.

I have to agree with you. Sometimes I think the Europeans are only one massive terrorist attack away from retaliating against all their muzzies. The French of all people are taking on their muzzies more than any other European country. They do things to monitor their muzzies population that would have the ACLU and Congress in a tizzy.

The article said 400,000 Muslim immigrants now live in Switzerland. THAT’S OVER 5% in little 7.8 million Switzerland.

Are the immigrants granted Swiss citizenship? The Swiss were notoriously provincial at least thru the late 60s. Back then I was offered a job by an international company based in Geneva, but getting a work permit was so difficult, they placed their international staff across the border in France.

The Europeans don’t have the American philosophy that our rights come from God, and are thus non-negotiable. From what I observe, they are fully capable of removing “rights” in the blink of an eye.

When the French get fed up, they do things without regard to morality. I’ve often said people here underestimate them. Remember, they blew up the Rainbow Warrior. In France you can be jailed for insulting the president. They don’t allow their students to wear veils in school - it’s just not allowed. No discussion.

The French really don’t have the concept of personal rights we have at all. And they certainly don’t mind being rude.

One day if it really tips over there, the French will do something drastic, the muslims will go violent, and I have a feeling last summer with all the car burnings will be small in comparison. And I don’t think they really care what the international community will say.

It’s funny when you think about it, that the one’s most capable of giving Obama heartburn may turn out to be the French.

The third secret of Fatima could be that Russia nukes Europe, and Muslim centers (US Blue city states) in the US and elsewhere in a last ditch effort to stop Islamicization. Russia is currently 20% muslim by population and Putin takes no prisoners in his efforts to keep borders, language and culture intact.

Helpful safety tip: Don't fool with the Swiss.

There is a lot more to them than snow, rocks, cheese, and cukoo clocks.

I sincerely doubt many Turkish or other Muslim immigrants have full citizenship.

The Swiss still are (and actually, have been for many hundreds of years) very (very) jealous in guarding their citizenship.

I have a German friend who married a Swiss girl and now lives in Switzerland--while working in Lichtenstein. Although a permanent resident, due to his wife, he says it will likely be impossible that he will ever have full citizenship.

Typical requirements for citizenship are:
-12 to 15 years of full time residency
-Passing a whole battery of tests on Swiss history and governance
-Passing difficult language tests in the local Swiss dialect (the Swiss have their own versions of German, French & Italian--unintelligible to the Germans, French or Italians)
-Lots of community service...
-Getting voted in by the members of your local community (where I believe it must be a high percentage...black balling is possible)
-Paperwork, paperwork, PAPERWORK!
-More RED TAPE!!!
-Finally, if you get fully approved, the government will let you pay $50,000+ to make up for your missed Militia service....
THEN, maybe, just, maybe, you can become Swiss.

The problem is, with such high & narrow standards of full citizenship, there are all kinds of quisi-citizenship statuses in-between...which include permanent residence...and the ability to lobby the government.

So I'm sure the Muslims have big pull...even though they technically aren't citizens.

Just as an aside--the famous John Calvin, Reformer of Geneva (and founder of Calvinism) in the 1500s....now considered one of history's greatest Swiss....was never a full citizen.

You’ve certainly validated my thoughts on Swiss citizenship. Thanks. The Japanese were similarly tight about citizenship. I suppose with all the Arab money in Swiss banks, they do have a certain amount of slack offered to them, at least regarding residency.

If you have a lot of money, I don’t think it’s hard at all to stay in Switzerland indefinitely.

However, they are about as close to a true democracy as exists (compared to our representative democracy)...this means the citizens vote on practically everything...and get ballots every few months.

My friends there told me how she had to last vote on...the color of of the trash cans in the village. THAT’S how democratic the Swiss are.

Lots of regulations—just like the rest of Europe—but, they can have guns (hand guns too) all registered, of course...however, all the regulations on everything are laws which everyone actually voted on.

It’s a very interesting, and exceedingly beautiful country. Before banking and watch-making...Switzerland was the West Virginia of Europe too—poor and backward.

Calvinism really changed all that. Now, it’s about the richest and best educated in the world.

A true democracy like that would only work when you have a limited population, in a country that hasn’t had ‘open doors’ for generations, where they have a common culture, ethic, mores.

I remember a joke years ago about one small Swiss village having a problem with its gallows, and an execution coming up. They asked a neighboring village if they could use theirs. Nope, said the neighbors, it’s used only for OUR criminals. Kind of clannish, but that’s sounding awful good lately ;)
