The secret to sex appeal lies with the tampering of pheromones, creating a "sexual tsunami", according to new research.
Scientists at the University of Toronto ... discovered that when the pheromone was removed, it created a "sexual tsunami" where the bugs proved attractive to one another, regardless of sex. The research found that male fruit flies with no history of homosexuality attempted to mate with their pheromone-free males ...
Even flies of a different species were interested, according to the research team.
"Lacking these chemical signals eliminated barriers to mating," Prof Levine said.

The research found that male fruit flies with no history of homosexuality... Fruit flies live only a couple of months, egg to dead, drying husk. Hard enough for me to get my mind around the idea of a "history," let alone visualize some grant-endowed researcher watching carefully to see which fly is mating with its own sex. Think maybe some sport little iridescent flags?
But I guess the main thrust (if you will) of this study is that given enough chemical inducement, we'd all lust cataclysmically after the likes of Helen Thomas and Phil Specter.

And, we need to know this... why? It is important. These scientists have induced homosexuality, even if it's just in the (appropriately named) "fruit" flies. If they identify a comparable trait in human homosexuals, they may be able to offer a cure. Imagine if gay men could choose to take a hormone or other supplement that would make them normal - many would make that choice. I'd call that a very good thing.

It is a mental illness. Is it? I suspect there is a biochemical facet, probably as a primary cause. [I'm ignoring the moral aspect, for the moment, since in this context it is a science question.]

Any grown man who does not know babies will only come from a vagina has mental problems... This may shock a few people, but many romantic encounters are not for the primary purpose of making babies. Often these liaisons are for physical pleasure, emotional bonding, and other non-reproductive purposes. I would expect, both from biology and from my own experience that attraction would in healthy people be limited to the opposite sex exclusively, to partners who match the general profile of someone who would at least potentially be able to make babies with them. The exceptions strike me as sufficiently odd that I think there is a biochemical aspect to this abnormality.

Often these liaisons are for physical pleasure, emotional bonding, and other non-reproductive purposes. That does not matter. The evidence in nature suggests that evolution is only possible with heterosexual relationships.
"Emotions" and all the other mental baggage is a human problem.

"Lacking these chemical signals eliminated barriers to mating," Prof Levine said. WRONG. Two male fruit flies banging away on each other DOES NOT improve mating success. No new flies are created by the act.
If you want to eliminate barriers to mating, you'd be having a go with all females, regardless of the normal mating ritual to choose a mate.

Don't think so. Every human has a certain "sexual" attraction, whether it be to barnyard animals, the same sex or (Lord forbid!) as God designed - between a man and a woman.
We're all sinners and we can choose to give in to our sin or repent of it. Intentionally sinning (any sin will do), then shaking our fist in defiance at God demanding he accept our sin as normal is sin of the worst kind. Men calling good evil, and evil good, is a precursor to the end. Lord forgive us...

Men calling good evil, and evil good, is a precursor to the end. Lord forgive us... I agree, but I don't see anything wrong with medicine making it easier for people to choose not to sin. If I had difficulty making the choice not to sin in terms of adultery and a pill would stop that peripheral urge without interfering with my marriage, I'd see nothing wrong with making the choice to take the pill when I felt strong and because that's what I wanted, to help make it easier to say "no thank you" when those frequent but unwanted opportunities to stray come along.
