PHOENIX An Arizona sheriff known for cracking down on people who are in the country illegally launched a crime and immigration sweep in northwestern metro Phoenix on Friday, a half day after officials in Washington limited his powers to make federal immigration arrests.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, whose sweeps have led to allegations of racial profiling, said the rebuff from Washington won't stop him. He said he can still arrest immigrants under a state smuggling law and a federal law that gives all local police agencies more limited power to detain suspected illegal immigrants.

Yeah... who would have thought that the law should actually be enforced? This selective enforcement of only “some” laws is a road to tyranny by this administration.
Arpaio for President! what more could you ask for. Someone who believes in the Constitution and the law and has a set. Unlike our present leader.
OK, so this is nothing but a fig leaf for the Obamites. A non-story. I feared he was gunning for a showdown in court, which he would ignominiously lose if his Federal deputization was the only thing that let him keep this going.
Go get ‘em Joe!
How can a lowly citizen show support for this guy???
Joe Arpaio is a classic American hero for which schools will be named. After we defeat communist health care we will defeat illegal aliens and run them out of our beloved country.
Excuse me, I said Unlike our present leader, I should have said President he is no leader.
Palin/Arpaio 2012
I don't know if I'd describe it as a "fig leaf for the Obamites". Clearly, Arpaio is keeping the story of illegal immigration alive when many in the media, and certainly in the Obama administration would like to ignore it. As the employment landscape continues to deteriorate, so will the tolerance of people that are here illegally.
No ones talking about immigration because the people who control the "talk" know that it would be unpopular to start the whole amnesty debate again. Arpaio is doing yeoman's work, even if - as a practical matter - the few illegals he detains are really just ceremonial rather than substantive.
Keep it up Joe. You might just expose the Leftists for whom they are.
Me too!!! To bad we can’t clone him.
Actually this pick and choose what laws to apply has been going on for years in many states.
EXCELLENT!!!! They got my vote.
Who would have thought that our country would condemn those who enforce our laws and celebrate those who do.
Or just present. That’s what he voted for most issues, right?
A real man! Wow!
And he is no President either..
He is ‘The Resident’.
“I love this guy”
I do too.. I love him like my own Dad.
. . . .of the white House, that is.
Me too. Go Sheriff
Suck on that Obamanation.
1/10th of the laws, 2x the enforcement.
Sheriff Joe told the Feds to get stuffed when they came to “limit his powers” - he’s elected by the people and can do whatever he needs to do under Arizona law.
Stupid feds aren’t fit to carry his baloney-sandwich-filled lunchbox!
“Arpaio is doing yeoman’s work, even if - as a practical matter - the few illegals he detains are really just ceremonial rather than substantive.”
A well stated assessment of the situation. Ever think of being a conservative publicist?
... and the practice is being perfected by this Obamination.
Driving to work this morning in Scottsdale AZ I heard them say that a “poll placed Sheriff Arpaio as the most popular politician in Arizona”
The PROBLEM with this poll is the word POLITICIAN - Sheriff Joe is NOT a politician - he is LAW ENFORCEMENT! We need more LAW ENFORCERS UP IN CONGRESS - LESS POLITICIANS!
LAW ENFORCERS FOR 2010!
My prayers for Joe tonight. He IS a TRUE AMERICAN HERO.
Good. Hopefully this will lead to increased 10th Amendment awareness.
Ah, no thanks. But, I am smart enough to know that MANY of our current problems - economic and social - all have deep roots in our uncontrolled immigration problems the last 25 years. God love Reagan, but he made a mistake when signing the last significant piece of immigration "reform". He didn't take his own advice, and didn't make sure what was expected was inspected.
Unfettered immigration - especially for the unskilled immigrants - is the single most corrosive societal element today. It artificially depresses wages for those who are already struggling to get by. It leads to more social destruction in the inner cities, because America's indigenous labor market is displaced by those who are willing to do much more, much longer for much less. And lastly, unlike the previous large immigration waves the last 125 years, these current immigrants are much more dependent on government and end up being a net liability to the country's economic ledger, rather than a net asset.
It's not racist to say it aloud. It's just the plain, but politically uncomfortable truth.
“known for cracking down on people who are in the country illegally” (AP) Thats all I had to read.
“Arizona Sheriff Launches Controversial Immigration Sweep”
or......
“Arizona Sheriff Launches Controversial Illegal Democrat Voter Sweep”
This is why the Dems hate him!
Controversial? To whom? It ain’t controversial to me.
The thing about Sheriff Joe is that he simply applies common sense to a situation. That’s what sets him apart from most office-holders, who have absolutely no common sense.
Good Point. I was in AZ and supported him completely. I’ll never understand why the left doesn’t support enforcement of the law. They are damaged mentally early on. Now they have a usurper in the White House who is ramming major new laws down our throat and they could care less.
Leni
absolutely... the feds be damned.
Too Funny, “Allegations of Racial profiling” while the sheriff defends our nations border with “Mexico” where “Mexicans” are trying to illegally trying to cross that border.
i wish you were right but look at what is about to happen
America,as we know it is about to cease to exist

Go Joe
An Inside Look at Three Sheriffs Departments Using 287(g)
By Jessica Vaughan, October 8, 2009
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano took a swipe at her erstwhile rival, the popular Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, by unceremoniously yanking his investigative 287(g) program late last week. Since previous audits found no serious problems, DHS seems to be throwing a bone to the many ethnic and civil liberties groups who resent Arpaios unapologetic attention to addressing the crime problems resulting from illegal immigration, and who are constantly clamoring for the program to be ended entirely. To their dismay, DHS definitely wants to keep Arpaios jail removal program, which has so far identified more than 18,000 criminal aliens, and dozens of other 287(g) programs remain intact around the country. Representatives of these programs report that its still business as usual in their jurisdictions. You can find out what that means, and how the 287(g) program enhances public safety while reducing criminal justice costs by viewing the first installment in a series of webinars on 287(g), produced by LEAPS.TV, and hosted by the Center.
Some excerpts:
* Harris County, Texas, placed more than 10,000 immigration detainers on criminal aliens in less than one year, with only eight local officers. Lt. Michael Lindsay describes how with in-house access to ICE databases, they have been able to identify offenders who come through the jail who would not otherwise be flagged as serious offenders, including illegal aliens wanted for murder in Mexico, and Zeta gang members wanted in local criminal investigations.
* Whitfield County, Ga., is a smaller county jail system that has successfully implemented the program without adding additional jail staff. Lt. Wes Lynch tells how they have significantly reduced the number of repeat offenders cycling through the jail, saving the county taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars on lifetime correctional costs for these recidivists, not to mention preventing future crimes and sparing future victims.
* Collier County, Fla., has a jail program and an investigative program. Commander Mike Williams describes how the 287(g) authority enabled the unit to nab a suspect in the murder of a child who was arrested on immigration violations (false ID) just before fleeing the state to evade charges. The aliens they arrest and remove under their 287(g) investigative program have long rap sheets and average 11 prior arrests apiece.
* The 287(g) programs in these jurisdictions have produced no complaints of racial profiling or abuse of authority. There has been no chilling effect on the agencies relationships with immigrants in their communities; on the contrary, immigrants continue to report crimes and often feel even more comfortable dealing with law enforcement as a result.
At the urging of key Democratic lawmakers, DHS is in the process of trying to re-negotiate all the 287(g) programs to try to bring them more into line with the administrations minimalist immigration enforcement priorities. It also appears that ICE is weeding out a few of the more ineffective 287(g) programs, such as in Framingham, Mass., where the police department seemed fearful of actually arresting any illegal aliens it discovered. While many of the local law enforcement partners have some concerns about certain new rules DHS has proposed, most report that their programs will not be seriously affected and that they can carry on with the removal of criminal aliens. The benefits and challenges of the 287(g) program will be further explored in a forthcoming CIS Backgrounder, which includes statistics from all 287(g) agencies.

The current crowd at DHS is no doubt disappointed at the efficacy of local law enforcement in identifying illegals. I will be interested to see how Sheriff Joe’s roundup goes today.
Thanks for the ping! :)
