LIVINGSTON, Mont. -- A hunter attacked by a grizzly bear in southern Montana also had the misfortune of being shot in the arm by a companion trying to stop the attack.
The incident last Saturday resulted in the bear being killed, the attacked hunter surviving and no charges against the companion for shooting his friend.
Park County Sheriff Allan Lutes says his office looked into the shooting of the hunter and found no negligence, with the other hunter trying to save his friend and killing the bear.
"It doesn't point to anything but an accident," Lutes said.
However, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are still investigating and have not released details, including the hunters' names.
Lutes says the hunters thought they were tracking a black bear near Cooke City.
They entered a grove of very dense, second-generation pine six to eight feet in height when their quarry, which actually was a grizzly, jumped one of the hunters.
"He was yelling at his partner to shoot the bear," Lutes said.
The first shot struck the hunter in the arm. Subsequent shots hit and killed the grizzly, which Lutes said was estimated to be 20-25 years old.
"It was a big boar," Lutes said.
Lutes advised hunters to use extreme caution while prowling the hills and forest for game.
"These hunters need to be very careful, especially in thick areas," he said.
Grizzlies are foraging, trying to add body weight before entering winter dens.
"They're not in good humor right now," Lutes said.
My first comment was based on what the Fish and Wildlife folks might try to concoct.
Memo to all my friends: If you have to shoot me in the arm to kill the grizzly that’s attacking me, hurry up and take the shot!
Do bears shot in the woods?
Ping
Are they ever?
Agreed!
If I’m going to die from a grizzly mauling, or a bullet....
I’ll take the bullet every time!
It was a big boar,” Lutes said.
I thought it was a bear?.....
“They’re not in good humor right now,” Lutes said.
When’s a bear in good humor?
bear male = boar
bear female = sow
Same as a pig.
Knock ‘em out John. Shoot up here amongst the both of us.
Manbearpig is the same too .
That is hugh information! Are you series?

All male bears are referred to as boars and female bears are sows. Kind of like what we have in D.C. now, boars and sows grubbing around the garbage pile looking for more ways to tax us.
Maybe they meant a big *bore*?
(couldn’t resist)
“Park County Sheriff Allan Lutes says his office looked into the shooting of the hunter and found no negligence, with the other hunter trying to save his friend and killing the bear. “
no negligence....
How long did it take them to figure that out? Is it me or do some law enforcement agencies seem to be working from a typed script like they were in a call center in India. Just no common sense whatsoever.
This is bogus. When the bear attacked, the “companion” was aiming for his friend’s leg to disable him so he could run away and his “friend” couldn’t.
I used the same tactic on my first 7 wives when I lived in Alaska...
I want to take wife #8 hiking this weekend. Anybody know where I can find an angry, hungry griz in SE Idaho or do I have to go all the way to Jellystone Park?
Well...he wuzn't aimin' at the bear...
You Got That Right!
What an excellent analogy!
...there’s a ‘berries & bells’ joke in there someplace.
And it might smell like pepper too...
“... these hunteres need to be very very careful...” True words.
Man I would want to be hunting with a better shot than that====just saying
maybe he was behaving piggishly?
I always heard they defecated in a rural environment...
Maybe the companion is related to Dick Cheney...
Why are you putting on your sneakers? you can't outrun a bear!I don't need to outrun the bear; I just need to outrun you!
But I run much faster than you do ...
[blam!] not now
Always funny.
It was a bore bear.
At least it wasn’t boring.
A big bore is what you want your friend to have.
A moose bit my sister while out looking for cheese.
Take the shot! NOW!

I wonder if it was these guys first time after bear. Black bear and Grizzly tracks are similar, but grizzly tracks, specially those of a big boar, are rather distinctive by their size and the marks of the claws.
Here's a pdf that shows the difference:
I never said he was a good friend.
Just be glad his buddy wasn’t just a safety or guide with a 00 Buck loaded double. That “just shot in the arm” thing couldn’t have been too good either albeit we all know the alternative was worse . Our local range set up a safari walk shoot one weekend that had automated targets that would rush you from concealed and open positions. Just knowing that along the route their WOULD be a paper critter trying to get me yet I played the game and considered it “dangerous game”..........
I got killed right proper a few times. Carried a Ruger No 1 re-chambered in .460 wthby mag first time through staying with the theme of the day and second time I carried a 870 with 00 Buck........ to try and win !
I’m not a as fast as I used to be thus ain’t a bear or lion hunter and will stay the heck out of their way ! I fish in dangerous game regions of the US I take my puppy and a 12 ga w/ 00 buck and slugs and give Mr Bear lots of room !
It was a fun day , thinking of hunters like Selby, Capstick and explorers like Sir Richard Burton.
AFTER he eats the hunters.
*burp*
Oopsie poopsie.
lol
These little distinctions are important.
Or “Doc, is he gonna make it? Well, he’d have had a better chance if you hadn’t gutted him...”
When I was much younger (48+ years ago) my dad and I went elk hunting South of Jackson with a friend of his. Warren, the friend, had lost his left arm at the elbow in WWII. We split up while hunting with Warren and his son going one way and my dad and me another. When we got back to camp Warren and his son were packing. Seems a bear had followed them all day and as he said: “a man with two arms has scant chance and man with one, none.” We went to an area around Pinedale and both got an elk the next day. Field dressed them, packed them to the pickups and were on the way home that evening.
