Now, there is no question that this was a hoax and both parents knew the entire time that the six year-old kid was not aboard the balloon.
Make them pay for the ‘rescue effort’ and make them spend some time in jail.
And that is certainly saying something.

As soon as I saw the wife swap guy I figured it was a publicity stunt. This was a tremendous waste of money, people power, emergency resources and time.
During that chase one of those rescuers could have gotten hurt. Not to mention all the people they upset.

From what I saw, there’s no way he could think that child was aboard that thing. I don’t even see where the child could have gotten in it, but the dad was there the whole time as it lifted up. This doesn’t sound exactly like the story he told Wolf Blitzer last night.

A guy called Hannity during the middle of all this drama and said it was impossible for a balloon that size to carry anything over 8 pounds, and was certain without a doubt that the boy was not carried off. He gave some pretty impressive mathematical calculations that convinced me he knew what he was talking about. All about how many square feet you need per pound of lift, and he said that balloon was much too small.
Hannity sort of blew him off, just saying “I hope your right, but...” Where Hannity could of taken that bit of information and scooped the rest of the media, he continued to let the show get caught up in the media frenzy, doing the popular thing. I like Hannity and Fox News, but too often they let drama beat out real investigative journalism..
As soon as I saw the thing when I got home, I knew that that boy was never in it.............

You aren’t very conservative when it comes to individual rights are you? CPS needs to stay out of peoples lives unless there are signs of physical or sexual abuse. You don’t have a right to tell the Heenes how to raise their kids and social services has no right to investigate them. If the parents did something illegal in all of this, let the police handle it.

Emotional and psychological abuse are just as bad as physical abuse.
These parents are over the line. At the very least, they need some supervision and some parenting classes.

i do too... i saw this family on Wife Swap earlier this week... yesterday i mentioned something about these "poor kids," and someone basically told me not to judge them just because i choose not to enjoy interesting things in life! i think the more that these parents show themselves, especially the father, the more people will see that they are truly self-centered...

If you haven’t figured it out by now Hannity is not the brightest bulb in the box. He parrots talking points ad nauseum and rarely offers any serious thought to any discussion.
Now with that being said, seeing the balloon in size context from this “launch video”, its hard to believe this thing was going to lift a 6 year old child off the ground, let alone reach several thousand feet with it.
However, had I launched this balloon and then couldn’t find my youngest, I think I’d be a bit panicy and second guess that assumption.
And with that being said, I think this whole thing was a hoax, period.
I feel sorry for them too but being a bad parent is no reason to call CPS.
If a child’s life isn’t in danger, CPS needs to stay out of the mix.
You want CPS to investigate every family who may be emotionally abusing their kids?
What about when they tell us that teaching our children that abortion is wrong is emotionally abusing them.

How about respecting people’s rights to privacy and raising their children how they see fit.
I saw the video. It definitely shows bad parenting. The definiton of abuse is to misuse. Children definitely shouldn’t be used to draw attention to parents or to make some political statement.
Alot of kids are abused in some ways (ie the parents use them in ways they shouldn’t). Putting them in pageants that they hate so mommy can relive her glory days, pressure them into a college, make them solely responsible for their siblings, teach them to cuss and burp because they think it is funny, buy them stuff instead of loving them. ALL OF THAT IS ABUSE as defined by the dictionary.
The problem is that CPS should investigate PHYSICAL and SEXUAL abuse. I don’t want to be investigated because someone doesn’t like the way I am raising my kids and I don’t want others investigated for the same reason. CPS is dangerous. They have ALOT of authority that is regularly abused. They have NO accountability. They can take your kids on a whim. If a parent has done something against the law, let the police deal with it. If they haven’t LEAVE THE PARENTS AND THE KIDS ALONE.
I would tend to argue that it might be a worthwhile exercise of the rescue system. It is advantagous to know if your rescue system is any good. It normally gets tested in rare real emergencies.

Exactly! If they are making the kids go along with a lie for self promotion that is emotional abuse. You have a right to raise your kids any way you want but you do not have a rght to abuse them ever.

However - it may be a good idea to limit this family’s access to mylar and helium.
And maybe a few other things ought to be added to that list.

This guy says he’s an amateur scientist. If that’s so, then he should have been able to calculate that there was no way in heck that his balloon would be able to lift off under the weight of a six-year-old kid. Not to mention that there appears that the balloon was designed with no opening at all that would be big enough to fit a human being.
Hoax, publicity stunt, screw-loose narcissistic idiocy. I have a feeling that when all is said and done, this guy’s going to be sorry he pulled this one.

Obviously it was about a hoax since the child was found hiding in the garage. There is a difference in an accident and in physically abusing your children.
