Senate judiciary committee votes to confirm two Bay Area federal judge nominees

The Senate Judiciary Committee today voted to confirm the Obama administration's first two nominees to the Bay Area federal bench, San Jose U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard Seeborg and San Francisco U.S. Magistrate Judge Edward Chen.

The committee's vote moves the nominations to the full Senate for a vote, and both Seeborg and Chen are expected to gain easy approval to lifetime federal judgeships. The 56-year-old Chen, a former American Civil Liberties Union lawyer, would be the first Asian-American federal judge to serve in the northern California federal courts.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who recommended Seeborg and Chen to the White House, urged the Senate to "move expeditiously" to confirm the judges. The judiciary committee today also voted to confirm two nominees to the Los Angeles federal court, including Jacqueline Nguyen, who would become its first Vietnamese-American woman federal judge.

Seeborg, 52, is a former federal prosecutor who has been a magistrate judge in San Jose for the past eight years. It remains unclear whether he will sit in San Jose or San Francisco once confirmed. Seeborg was nominated to fill a San Francisco vacancy, but he could wind up staying in San Jose.

You can be reasonably certain of two things with any judicial nominee put forward in this adminstration: The nominee will be as far left politically as can be found. The nominee will put the leftist political agenda ahead of the law.
