Albania Wants remains of Mother Teresa

Albania wants the remains of Nobel Peace laureate Mother Teresa and the only post-independence monarch to be returned to the country, the prime minister has said.

Mother Teresa's remains are in India and King Ahmet Zog's in France. Prime minister Sali Berisha's government has asked India for the Roman Catholic nun's to be returned by the 100th anniversary of her birth in August.

Berisha yesterday said Albania has started negotiations with India's government, which "will be intensified this year".

Macedonia and Albania have been engaged in a dispute over the national identity of Mother Teresa, who was born in Macedonia to an ethnic Albanian family. She went to Calcutta, India, in 1929, and dedicated herself to the service of the poor and infirm, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

After her death in 1997, she was buried in Calcutta and Pope John Paul II beatified her in 2003. Albania's main airport outside the capital, Tirana, is named after Mother Teresa.

Zog was the small Balkan country's first and only post-independence monarch, reigning from 1928 to 1939, when he fled after Albania's occupation by fascist Italy. He died in France in 1961, and is buried at the Thiais Cemetery near Paris.

Sure thing, I'm sure India is going to bow before the massive political might of the Elbonians.

She should stay in Calcutta where she lived and worked if you ask me...her tomb will be nothing more than a bullet point on a European tourist brochure in 70% Muslim Albania.

They didn't want in her lifetime to sponsor her causes or aspirations, so why in her death do they deserve her remains?
If not for her fame they would care less IMO.

if they are this eager to get her remains, I fear the Albanians are planning to use them to create a Circus-like tourist attraction which would defile her most incredible dignity. Her remains should stay in India where she is genuinely loved and respected by the people.

Hasn't India been whining to get some of the British crown jewels back? Not returning Mother Teresa's remains would cut the ground right out from under their feet.

MEA: Mother Indian citizen, no question of giving remains
Indian Express

Ahead of Mother Teresa’s birth centenary next year, the Centre putting all apprehensions and speculation to rest, has said under no circumstances would the government allow anyone to exhume her remains and hand these over to the Albanian government as demanded by that country.

“Mother Teresa was an Indian citizen and she is resting in her own country, her own land. The question (of returning her remains) does not arise at all. I believe that answers all your questions,” Vishnu Prakash, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, told The Indian Express over the phone.

Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha had said on Saturday that talks were on with the Indian government for the return of the mortal remains of the Mother, who had died in Kolkata in 1997 and was buried at the courtyard of the Missionaries of Charity she founded in 1950.

Berisha also said the efforts would be intensified as that country wanted the mortal remains on the eve of the birth centenary of the Mother.

Not quite. The crown jewels were taken by force. Mother Teresa walked out on her own. If something is stolen from you then you have cause to demand its return. If you give something away they you lose all claim to it.

Mother Teresa was born in Skopje in 1910 in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to ethnic Albanian Catholic parents. Albania didn't exist, neither did Macedonia while Austro-hungaria doesn't exist any more. She came to India in 1929 and was there when India became independent and has had Indian citizenship since the birth of their republic.

She died Indian.

hence, she was Indian, not Albanian or Macedonian.

no relationship between those two.

The main stone in the British crown jewels is from the Koh-i-noor diamond. This is an ancient diamond that belonged to the last Sikh ruler of the Punjab who went to live in the UK. The taking of this diamond by the BRitish has always been very ambiguous.

it's kind of like the Elgin marbles, though lesser authority

However, there's no real aim of getting this back
