Maverick fallout: GOP won't retaliate [Snowe, Graham, McCain get away]
Politico ^ | 2009-10-15 | Lisa Lerer & Manu Raju

Mitch McConnell and his deputies in the Senate Republican leadership are responding very cautiously to Olympia Snowe’s decision to become the first GOP vote for a Democratic health care reform bill.

That’s about all they can do.

“My job as whip is not to twist her arm but to bring all the information that we can bring to bear on the issue and hope that people vote the way we would like to see them vote,” said McConnell’s No. 2, Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.).

Kyl said a heavy-handed approach “doesn’t work.”

So...let me get this straight. Harry Reid threatens to pull the chairmanship of any Senator who doesn't vote for ObamaCare, and - again - Republicans slink away with their tails between their legs afraid of any controversy whatsoever to include being afraid of Party discipline. What a bunch of weenies.

Politics is about the battle of ideas and choices. Democrats did not win the majority in Congress or the White House by compromising. They did not oust the Republicans by helping them pass an agenda they did not agree with. They did not come into power by following advice to be more bipartisan. They did what the Republicans must now do to have any chance of gaining a sustainable majority and advancing their ideas. They fought for what they believed in.

Ironically, I got a call from the Republican Senatorial Committee yesterday, wanting mo money. It was so funny and I am still laughing. The first thing out of this caller’s mouth was, “what do you consider the greatest threat to this Nation, right now.” It couldn’t have been better timing, I responded with, “Olympia Snowe.” I then proceeded to tell her not one more red cent would come from my pocket as long as she could benefit. She told me she was getting a lot of those sentiments.

This is what is expected in this corrupt "Two-Party Cartel". The owners (elites) of these POS congress members wag their fingers & these (R)s do what they are told. These (R)s have absolutely no core political values. They too need to be gone. Voting for them only legitimizes them.

No that is exactly what the job of the whip is. The minority leader is all sweetness and sugar. The whip busts heads. That's how it works. If you don't understand that you need to get a different job. Or perhaps a spine, that might help too.

Great link to Chris Chocola (Club for Growth) editorial (excerpts):

"Republicans win when they campaign and govern as conservatives. That is what people expect out of them. When Republicans compromised their traditional beliefs and failed to deliver on reform and fiscal responsibility, they lost the trust of the voters."

"If the American people really wanted Republicans to compromise, be moderate and be bipartisan, John McCain would be president of the United States."

Term limits would improve the situation greatly. Once a Pubbie reaches the Senate, he is more eager to please the Beltway crowd than his constituents. But as an incumbent he is very difficult to keep from being renominated, and centrists and conservatives will vote for him against any typical Demonrat.

Here's the deal. There are some issues and votes where a party should release its members to vote their conscience. There are others when they have to require the member to vote with the party [and its philosophy]. It's called party discipline. The GOP doesn't have any. And as a minority party that can't stop anything, including a cloture vote, without Democrat help, the argument that they'll drive these douche bags into the arms of the Dims is specious.

That's why it's time for conservatives to leave the GOP and found a national Conservative Party. Except for seeking to wield political power [for differing philosophical ends], we have NOTHING in common with the bulk of the GOP officeholders. Snowe, Collins, Graham, McCain and others should be driven from the GOP, but won't be. As a third party, we can cross- endorse conservative ‘Pubbies running for office, give a party and platform to those running without the GOP’s blessing, and enforce discipline on those who try to take our standard and surrender it to the enemy in the name of bi-partisanship.

And, yes, such a party will leave the Dims in power. But they're there now. And Olympia Snowe, et al are going to keep them there -as ‘Pubbies, or as Dims. Keeping the ‘[R]’ after their name is too high a price to pay for no appreciable return. Better to build on principle than gossamer.

What a bunch of BS. To the extent possible, there needs to be consequences for actions that clearly are opposed to Republican/Conservative principles. Period. And if she doesn’t like it, she can change her party affiliation.
