California appears poised to be first to ban power-guzzling big-screen TVs
LA Times ^ | 10/14/09 | Marc Lifsher

The influential lobby group Consumer Electronics Assn. is fighting what appears to be a losing battle to dissuade California regulators from passing the nation's first ban on energy-hungry big-screen televisions.

On Tuesday, executives and consultants for the Arlington, Va., trade group asked members of the California Energy Commission to instead let consumers use their wallets to decide whether they want to buy the most energy-saving new models of liquid-crystal display and plasma high-definition TVs.

"Voluntary efforts are succeeding without regulations," said Doug Johnson, the association's senior director for technology policy. Too much government interference could hamstring industry innovation and prove expensive to manufacturers and consumers, he warned.

But those pleas didn't appear to elicit much support from commissioners at a public hearing on the proposed rules that would set maximum energy-consumption standards for televisions to be phased in over two years beginning in January 2011. A vote could come as early as Nov. 4.

Personally, I hope Hollywood also bans movie theaters- especially private home theaters. Speaking of energy guzzlers. Let’s see Spielberg at the forefront of this, maybe with some help from Michael Moore.

My hunch is they will all donate tax-deductible money to ALgor’s shellfront carb credit scam and claim it covers their emissions from their big screens

When big screen TV’s are criminalized, only criminals will have big-screen TV’s

There really needs to be a lot more intrusive laws in California. Why, I understand you can go out for a walk without informing the California Bureau of Pedestrian Traffic — and that is shameful!!!

I assume these regulations will restrict sales. Now what would prevent a resident or business owner from driving to a neighboring state to buy one? Another example of California shooting itself in the foot.

Yes.

About 15 years ago I recall it became illegal to smoke at outdoor sporting events and charcoal grills were also banned. These were regs issued outside the (ab)normal CA legislative process.

Boy is this ever going to open the floodgates of government totalitarianism if successful.

Nobody really needs power-hungry 50" TVs. Then again, nobody really needs 28 cu.ft. refridgerators, 6-burner stoves, incandescent light bulbs (or more than one light in a room), more than one bathroom, more than one computer, whirlpool tubs, swimming pools, power garage door openers, cars with more than 60hp, gas-powered lawnmowers, motorcycles, ATVs, RVs, boats, or more than 800sf of living space.

Ban it all, I say. It's for the polar bears.

Firearms, light bulbs, ammo, and now televisions. The opportunities for a black marketeer are growing. No wonder socialist states spawn black markets.

“Hey, I can get you a regular flush toilet, a 45 inch plasma, and a box of 50 .22’s, but ya gotta pay cash and be quiet about it all, yano? What, you want light bulbs, 100 watt incans? Yeah, I gotta source, new unused, never been screwed in, but it will cost lots extra.”

CA is a big state and the most heavily populated sections aren't close to a state line so it might be tough.OTOH,we here in MA,with our recently raised 6.25% sales tax,are close to southern NH which has *no* sales tax.In fact, southern NH is a suburb of Boston so lots of folks in Greater Boston make major purchases in NH.

I wonder if CA's problem with such a ban might be internet sales,as I suggested in post #11.

I wonder who will be the first politician to take a round to the cranium somewhere in America over the next year or two? Seriously, it’s about to that point. As a group, they are grossly out of control, they have zero concerns about the people they represent, and they continue ram-rodding their commie agenda with zero fears of personal ramifications. I really think that is about to change.

There are, alas. Unfortunately, most of us are homeowners and can’t sell our properties to get the hell out of here, plus the job market being what it is, it’s not as easy to leave here as it would have been two-three years ago.

However, America, if you want a preview of your lives by the time Zero’s out of office, look at what is happening to us here - same sort of problem - unelected commissions granted too much power to regulate the lives of its citizens, oppressive taxing and a “feel good” executive and legislative. Not to mention activist courts.

However, illegals are exempt from this rule as their 65” TV’s will be supplied with our tax dollars.

BTW, a 65” LED/LCD uses less energy than a 20” CRT... F-U you nutcakes! I think they have gone MAD with power!

Why don't they just open extermination camps and start killing off the citizen polluters? It would be faster and cheaper and they can soon have California back to it's pure, pristine natural state.

After all, Arnold is an Austrian. Another Austrian was pretty efficient at it.

Better sit tight if you live in Calipornia. As this state goes, so will go the nation. Fascist regulators aren't confined to one area of the country. There's no escaping them.

They'll be coming soon to a theater-of-operations near you.

No restrictions on ammo here in California - yet....just last week I picked up four boxes of .380 hollow points for my bro out of state. It'd been years since I'd bought ammunition, so I fully expected an ID check, certificate of circumcision and the whole banana.....nope, nothin' - paid and out the door.

Arnie, however, just signed something that will change this next July.

The payoff could be big for TV owners, said Ken Rider, a commission staff engineer. Average first-year savings from reduced electricity use would be an estimated $30 per set and $912 million statewide, he said.

The payoff could be big, alright. This works out to $.57 A WEEK!!!!

I often wonder if these propagandists even read the crap that they spew on a daily basis.

This is legitimate because a lot of people simply plant their butts in front of the TV and watch all day long. Hence, it falls within the purview of the CA Dept of Ag!

I believe about 7 to 10 years ago Cal pretty much prevented their utilities to expand. I also remember they created a situation where Cal was importing all its new electrical energy from places like Az. The legislature prevented Cal utilities to charge the necessary rates to insure domestic growth in electrical energy. There thinking would be to artificially force conservation on its citizens. I believe this is the national plan for gas, oil, and coal. So instead of planning for growth, the govt creates scarcity which requires govt intervention in all things human. Interesting to see if Califorinians continue to vote for more paternalism or will they seek self determination? My guess is they are at the tipping point. The loss of around 100,000 more taxpayers and the whole the state becomes economically unsupportable.
