NAACP President and CEO Throws Penalty Flag on Rush Limbaugh (But Van Jones Okay)
NAACP ^ | Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Posted on 10/14/2009 2:28:22 PM PDT by kristinn

WASHINGTON DC – NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous today, had a conversation with NFL Commissioner Goodell to discuss Rush Limbaugh’s intentions to buy the St. Louis Rams.

“The NAACP was very clear in our conversation with the NFL Commissioner—we will not stand for a potential owner, of any race expressing the kind of hatred that Rush Limbaugh continues to spread,” stated Benjamin Todd Jealous, NAACP President and CEO. “Commissioner Goodell was very supportive of the NAACP’s concerns and we both pledged to work together to expand opportunities throughout the NFL. The NAACP fully supports the NFL and the NFLPA and we were pleased to see the Commissioner standing up for the players and condemning the remarks made by Limbaugh,” added Jealous.

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

NAACP Continues its Support of Van Jones and White House Green Jobs Initiative

NAACP Continues its Support of Special Advisor of Green Jobs Van Jones and the White House Green Jobs Initiative. The NAACP is calling for civility in the national discourse on safe, clean communities and sustainable sources of domestic energy. It is time to end the personal attacks on administration officials as a distraction to crucial discussion on our nation and our world's environmental conditions.

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous:

“It is sad and unfortunate that our nation's precious airwaves and cable television time are being occupied with the unscrupulous, diversionary tactics launched by right wing extremists such as Glenn Beck. These desperate tactics divert America's attention and intellectual resources away from issues affecting our families and communities. These life-and-death concerns are being overshadowed by employing ruthless attacks against Van Jones, White House Special Advisor for Green Jobs and dedicated advocate for safe, clean and healthy communities.

Van Jones has established himself through his many years in public service as a hardworking advocate for positive, progressive change. He is a devoted husband and father. Mr. Beck and the other news services' portrayal of Mr. Jones to the contrary is not only distracting and disingenuous but harmful and destructive.

“The only thing more outrageous than Mr. Beck’s attack on Van Jones is the fact that there are sponsors that continue to pay him to provide this type of offensive commentary. I can only assume hat this is the very reason that several dozen organizations throughout our country have gone on record stating they will boycott FOX News (the television network home of Glenn Beck). While we defend the right to free speech for all Americans, we expect news outlets throughout our country to uphold civility in their portrayal of the President of the United States as well as members of his administration and others who have wrongfully come under scrutiny. America's news outlets have the responsibility to uphold accuracy and integrity in their reporting."

Hilary O. Shelton, Director of the NAACP Washington Bureau and Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Policy:

“The tactics being deployed by right wing extremist commentators to divert the American people's attention away from very important issues of our nation such as sustainable energy, lack of dependence on foreign fuel sources, and the creation of living wage jobs are not only unethical but dangerous to the future of our country. Most recently, television commentator Glenn Beck of FOX News attempted to besmirch the character and integrity of President Obama's administration officials such as White House Special Advisor for Green Jobs Van Jones. This feeble, mean spirited attack is little more than a desperate attempt to derail the adminstration's priority of clean sustainable energy while working to end our nation's dependency on foreign energy sources.

“In an economy where unemployment is leaning toward 10 percent, and African-American unemployment lies at over 15 percent, the creation of employment opportunities for all Americans, including African-American and low-income communities, is a critical necessity. It is our experience that Mr. Jones’ plan to reinvigorate urban areas through the creation of green jobs not only demonstrates a constructive vision to invest in our communities, but also recognizes that climate change is indeed a civil rights issue. That is why we support his implementation of this very thoughtful plan.”

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous on the resignation of Van Jones, White House Special Advisor for Green Jobs

Van Jones made a tough decision to step aside so that the nation's reform agenda will not be sidetracked by those who spin lies for profit.

Mr. Jones was on Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world before he entered the White House. He was a bestselling author before he entered the White House. He was someone who made the leap from the public schools of Jackson, Tennessee to Yale University long before he entered the White House.

Now that he has chosen to leave the White House, we fully expect Mr. Jones to continue to help lead our nation out of its dual crises of environmental degradation and mass unemployment.

On a personal note, I have known Van Jones for more than 15 years. In that time he, as is characteristic of great public servants, has continuously grown and increased his capacity for improving the condition of humanity. Throughout, he has been guided by a powerful sense of patriotism and love for all.

--Ben Jealous, President and CEO, NAACP

The NFL has chosen a side in this fight. DEFUND ALL TAXPAYER SUPPPORT of NFL franchise municipally owned stadiums.

Boy! The Communists are really zeroing in on Rush, aren’t they? Their names are really interesting. Here’s Mr. Jealous of the Colored People’s Association and over in the NFL Mr. Irsay (I think it’s really Hearsway) is also responding to something he thinks he heard from somebody who thinks he heard somebody say he thought he heard Rush Limbaugh say.

Really sharp bunch.

Looking at some of the worthless scum in the NFL it’s obvious there are jobs programs about. Glad I quit caring what this league does long ago. Between boring play and greedy athletes, its day is past.

These bungholes have been saying that the NFL can spurn Rush because they (the NFL) are a private organization that can include or exclude anyone they want.

Makes you wonder about the forced integration of the sports leagues, and all the horsecrap—the forced “diversity” programs, the mandatory interviewing of black candidates for coaching jobs, etc etc—I guess when these shakedown artists want something, the NFL is fair game.

How do we "refuse to let people be mistreated anymore"? What can we do to put an end to the prejudice and racism and hatred from the left? How much more do we have to sit back and take? How much longer are we to be silent in the face of this kind of hostility?

Fine. Let the NFL do without the hundreds of millions Rush would infuse to the Rams. The NAACP would rather steal it from taxpayers, anyway.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen happen in pro sports. Nobody even bothers to check what is actually said, the DUMB athletes just believe every freaking rumor posted on Wiki.

There are some athletes I respect. Fewer and fewer these days, I hope the NFL goes bankrupt.

Maybe Rush should buy Jack Roush’s NASCAR team. He’d have a lot more fun, with the drivers and fans.

All of us white folks just need to take our money somewhere else. The NFL would then fail pretty quickly.

It isn’t like the blacks could afford to go to an NFL game without some government subsidy paying for the ticket.

Boycott the NFL permanently. No more games, no more T.V., no more merchandise.

I used to be a fan but I threw in the towel a long time ago. It’s millionaire players and millionaire owners being supported by the property taxes of little old widow ladies who have to pay off the mountain of municipal bonds sold to build the stadiums in which the millionaires play.

Did the NAACP mention the Congressional Black Caucus at all?

I am waiting for B.H. Obama to announce his choice of a church. It has been a while since he stood before the voters and read his promises. The reason he was surprised by Rev. Wright and his vulgar sermons was, B.H.Obama never went to his church. He did not attend. I await his Muslim roots to emerge.

Benjamin Todd Jealous appears to be a regular old fashioned "Uncle Tom".

No, Rush didn't make racist statements but he did make a statement about racist reporters who failed to accurately report on a quaraterback's performance.

Ol'To(m)dd Jealous probably ought to retire before he gets in more trouble and makes himself look even more foolish.

When are white people going to realize that every other race, politically, puts their race first and their unity as Americans second? It’s been driven into their heads that they have to stick together so as to emasculate the white people of the U.S. Until we stand up and tell these people to either stand together as one or get the hell out this kind of thing will continue to flourish.

I have to admit - I still enjoy watching it on tv. I would never by tickets or go to a game.

Have you seen people at the games with their team costumes on? Dressed like "hog women" at Redskins game? Or the drunken fools in Green Bay painted green and yellow? What possesses these people to degrade themselves as they watch someone else play a game?

Darned right! Wouldn't it be fun seeing an EIB Network sign on a car! The NFL doesn't deserve Rush, and they proved it this week. I think he knew it this afternoon when he went after Rick Sanchez (which I thought was great!) ... and Jesse and Al. I've never heard Rush in an attack mode like that, but why not ... he deserved the moment after this. I'm still not believing "they" let it happen ... gives you some second thoughts about the NFL, that's for sure. (It was bad enough they let Obama kick of Spanish Night at the Monday Night Football, now this?) Oh me. Maybe I could learn to like hockey?

What the Hell did Rush say that was racist?

Initially, the outrage was by the race hustlers, Jesse and Al, NOT racism but outrage at Rush’s perceived lack of patronage toward NFL players.

No one even gave a critical look at what was said.

There was a statement that was construed to be racist and it was 11 years ago.

That is right 11 years ago! Presumably it would have been racist then right?
