Bill extends 'kid' coverage to age 27 Wednesday, October 14, 2009 3:07 AM
WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the House health-care-overhaul bill now being finalized would allow young adults to stay on their parents' health insurance policies until they're 27.
Most insurance plans let kids remain on their parents' policies while they're in college.
Pelosi said the provision in the House bill would help those who are out of school, looking for work or are part-time employees.
The provision is based on Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper's legislation. Dahlkemper said 31 percent of people ages 19 to 29 don't have health-care coverage. The Pennsylvania Democrat says there is "a clear and urgent need" to cover young adults.
The Congressional Budget Office has not assessed how much the provision would cost.
My God, these people are SICK.
Pay your freaken debts FIRST Pelosi!!!!!!!
The source and link didn’t post with the article. Neither did my first comment.
The list, ping
Can we parents also deduct daycare costs for them up to age 27?

Parents cover their kids while working......yet are left to die at the end.

Well, with the Marxist liberal education system in the US turning out the most ignorant students in decades, they'll all be in college till they're 30, so 27 is no big deal.
I guess some democrat realized that most 20 somethings weren't going to go out and buy insurance at any price OR pay the fine.
Man, we’re getting screwed from both ends.
...the Slacker Entitlement Act of 2009....gotta keep Jason and Brittany covered while they “find themselves”
We should also be able to continue claiming them as dependents because they are going to be forced to live at home with mom and dad because there will be no jobs for them.
As far as I know, all the military branches let you join at least up to the age of 27 (some higher). The are equal opportunity employers. And they all provide excellent health care benefits.
“Can we parents also deduct daycare costs for them up to age 27?”
Why only until 27?
According to my observations, a great many people remain “childlike” well into their 30s.
What, specifically, is wrong with this plan?
My daughters are young now, but I’d be happy to have my health insurance cover them until they’re 20-somethings.
The Army is taking up to 41 in some job skills, the Navy is 36.
That cardboard box is going to get awfully crowded. May have to think about adding on another box for extra space. And I forsee anti-crowding deed restrictions placed on under-overpass housing areas.
If it’s such a great idea to “take care” of them until they’re 27, why can’t we claim them as dependents on our income tax if they’re living at home?
thank you!!
My son turned 18 last December, he graduated HS in May. He was accepted to college but was going back and forth with joining the Marines and did not do his orientation, etc. so when he finally decided to go to college that boat had sailed. My husband and I stongly encouraged him to move out where his college is and get a job. He did it, is working, paying his own bills and will start school in Jan. The thought of one of my boys living with me when they are in their 20’s makes my skin crawl. An emergency is one thing, but I would fail like a failure as a mother if I had MEN still behaving like young boys and depending on mommy and daddy to pay their way.
But my daughter’s only 34. Why should she be excluded from my coverage?
Maybe it’s because I don’t have any - I’m on Tricare as a military retiree. Maybe it’s because she’s on her husband’s coverage along with the three grands.
You don’t think adults, especially over age 25, should take responsibility for their own lives?
I know this is a silly thought, but how about we let the insurance companies make that decision? Customers and the businesses can mutually negotiate the contract they want to enter into with each other.
Off to the FEMA camps with you! ;-)
“What, specifically, is wrong with this plan?”
I think the main thing is that the government is telling the insurance companies how to run their business. In some cases such as health and safety that is a good thing to a certain degree. Not so sure about telling companies who their customers should be.
I imagine that there might be some insurance companies that do this already. And if not, if so many folks think it is such a great idea perhaps those companies will try to make more money and serve that market.
If not - buy your daughters their own insurance plans when they need it.
Let the free market figure it out. Bank of America figured out the money they could make serving the illegals - they didn’t need an act of Congress to force them to give loans, bank accounts, etc. to the poor illegals.
In Mass, a “child” up to the age of 26 can stay on their parent’s insurance if they’re still in school. My son is 23 and still on mine.
What's wrong is the government interfering with the free market.
My daughters are young now, but Id be happy to have my health insurance cover them until theyre 20-somethings.
Then find an insurance company which offers this service, but don't force the company at the point of the gun.
A normal, healthy 21-year-old can purchase private health insurance for just a little over a hundred bucks a month. The average 21-year-old spends that much on Red Bull.
Yes, I think IL has a similar plan to age 26-28 I don’t really remember...
When some government worker offers Mom and Dad end-of-life counseling teling them how it is their duty to their family and society to die peacefully and not fight old age and illness at great expense- the kids will get the house anyway.
Yeah and the insurance companies will pay for this extended coverage from the money they get from the tooth fairy.
I guess my premiums will be double after this bill passed. Look in the mirror you are the one who is paying for this. Also everyone who doesn’t have kids or parents who have grown children who are productive enough to have their own insurance. By 27 I was married and had a kid on the way. By 27 I had been in the workforce for five years with my own health insurance. At 27 I owned my own home. I am 41 years old and I can’t believe that 27 year old adults are still dependant on their parents.
So, if your ‘child’ doesn’t have insurance, are the parents going to be fined?
any “child” 18 or over that is claimed under this should lose their right to vote, enter into contracts, smoke, etc... If they can’t handle the responsibilities associated with being Adult, why should they get any of the benifits.
Libs think everyone should act like kids regardless of their age. They want everyone to be dependent on the government like a child so they can play parent from capitol hill.
>> any child 18 or over that is claimed under this should lose their right to vote, enter into contracts, smoke, etc... If they cant handle the responsibilities associated with being Adult, why should they get any of the benifits. <<
It is all about the benefits and damn the responsibilities....
No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.
So a person can be a member of Congress and still be on mommy's health care plan for two years?

Nice catch
