'Toughest sheriff' vows face-off with feds over illegals--Street sweep planned as pact expires
The Washington Times ^ | October 14, 2009 | Rebecca Larsen

Posted on 10/14/2009 8:35:24 AM PDT by jazusamo

PHOENIX | The man who likes to call himself "America's toughest sheriff," Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz., is planning a Friday showdown with the feds.

The sheriff has announced he will defy the U.S. Department of Homeland Security by doing a street sweep for illegal immigrants one day after the expiration of the agreement that has permitted him to conduct such operations for the past three years. The sheriff has said he expects the deal not to be extended, though federal officials have remained publicly noncommittal.

Deputies, and Sheriff Arpaio, will stake out an intersection somewhere in the Phoenix metro area to stop cars for traffic violations - everything from speeding to broken taillights to driving while intoxicated. Both drivers and passengers will be held if deputies determine that they are illegal immigrants - regardless of how minor was the initial infraction.

Sheriff Arpaio is charging ahead because he claims he has jurisdiction under a 1996 federal law allowing police to detain someone briefly if that person could be in the country illegally.

"We will call Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] to see if they will take them from us," Sheriff Arpaio told The Washington Times. "And if they tell me to let them go, I guess I'll have to transport them myself to the border [about 175 miles] and turn them over to the Border Patrol."

Sheriff Arpaio, 77 but looking 10 years younger, has been shaking up Maricopa County for 17 years, and he's not ready to quiet down: "I just got re-elected last year, but I'm going to run again, and I've already raised a lot of money. They'll have to put up with me for another seven years."

That’s an understatement! LOL
Joe is the man. I fully expect him to go balls-to-the-wall with this as he always does. He’s not some kind of loose cannon nutjob. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

Sheriff Joe: keep sticking your finger in the eyes of the corrupt federales—you’re the only one we have brave enough to do so. All the rest run like rabbits when the feds give them orders.

Oh this could get good. If the feds try to go after him for trying to make Arizona streets safer, they’re going look like bigger fools than they already do ... if that is possible. Though, I imagine that’s exactly why he’s doing it.

Best sentence in story:

"He said he expects to use a new secret weapon,' but declined to say what it is."

Yeah, maybe that's because it's... secret!

The Founders never intended for the federal government to dominate every aspect and detail of our lives or to dictate to the states which laws they can and cannot enforce. The rightful relationship is for the states to determine what they want the federal government to do, or not to do.

We are already well down the road of a revolution against the constitution by the federal government and the Obama administration is determined to finish it off.

Shouldn't that read "regardless of how minor the initial infraction was"?

Wouldn’t that be sweet? But,somehow I can’t see him getting mixed up with the dirty din of Washington politics. He knows he’s much more effective where he is.However, I think he’d make an excellent governor.

What I can’t understand is where the feds get off thinking they can deny him picking up illegals under his jurisdiction. They are criminals in his county and it’s his job to pick up criminals in his county. Do the feds want him to ignore murderers, child molesters, and DUIs along with the illegals?

That’s the pathetic thing about this. The feds want the criminal illegals arrested but if they’re not criminals they want him to release them. Last I heard it’s a crime to enter the country illegally and Sheriff Joe thinks so too.

Should we offer some bounty for each dearly deported one? Say $20 or $50 to Arpio or Maricopa County coffers to cover the cost of gas? I would offer more for say Chinese or Arab nationals as you gotta wonder why they would be in the country when they don’t even come from South or Central America, no?

The Mexicans are smarter than US politicians. I say let’s grab 537 random illegal aliens and put them in congress and the WH. And send the current batch of stooges in power to Mexico.

Well, the initial infraction was crossing the border illegally, so whatever the driving offense is should be considered a secondary infraction. Right?

Damn, I like this guy.

If we just had a few hundred more like him along the border, we’d start to see a serious dent in illegal immigration numbers.
