Politics: After hemming and hawing for weeks, Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe did what many knew she'd do: support the abominable Baucus health care overhaul.
The GOP has a big problem. Some who march under its banner don't really accept the basic philosophy it espouses one of low taxes, small government and support of the Constitution. Snowe is one of those.
Her decision to vote "aye" on the Baucus bill, which passed out of the Senate Finance Committee on an otherwise partisan 14-9 vote, was called a "surprise" by some. It wasn't.
She's done this for years, undercutting her party and lending support to the opposition. Don't look for some transcendent reason.
"My vote today is my vote today," Snowe said, clarifying nothing. "It doesn't forecast what my vote will be tomorrow."
Nothing like standing firmly on principle.
What's galling is Democrats could have passed this without Snowe's help. By lending her voice and senatorial prestige, she weakened her party's otherwise resolute stance against the health care bill. In short, she gave Democrats badly needed bipartisan cover to ram Baucus or something worse down all our throats.

The voters in Maine must send her packing in 2012
She’s a nasty bitch! Get her gone!
Does the RNC contribute any money to Snowe’s campaigns? If so, it needs to END!
They will not, anymore then the folks in Montana will dispose of Maxine Baucus.
A democracy will last as long as it takes for the voters to realize that they can vote themselves something for nothing. Screw the other guy.
Gunner
It’s not undercutting her party, it’s undercutting America and it’s patriots.
Any Mainers here? Does she bring home the bacon in return for turning her back on the R party all the time, or is she just ineffective all the way round?
If the GOP wanted to oust Snowe from the GOP they would. GOP leaders quite apparently like this rino........
I bet they give to the dems!!!!
A better question is, does the RNC care what she has done.
Its not like this was a surprise. Also her fellow traveler in Maine would have done the same ... yet the RNC continues to support both of them in the past years as they have consistently voted against the party's “supposed” principles.
The GOP is a dying organization with ideas that are no different from their opposition.
The GOP needs to be dispatched along with the Wiggs. They no longer practice their core beliefs and no longer deserve the votes of Conservatives.
I've always been under the impression that the candidate declared his or her party affiliation when filing the qualifying paperwork for the election. How, exactly, would the party oust her? I can't recall ever seeing that done on either side of the aisle.
I believe it is up to the voters of Maine to send her packing in 2012. I pray they wake up do so
voters should kick snowe out of the senate.
mcstupid, too.
etc.
Have you ever heard of a guy named Joe Lieberman? His party kicked his ass out even if he is too stupid to recognize what they did. Same thing can happen to Snowe.
It is time for conservatives mount a concerted primary challenge to Snowe, and, failing that, to back the democratic candidate if he/she is better on the issues than Snowe. This is ultimately how we got rid of that t**d Lowell Weicker, and the senator who replaced Weicker, Joe Lieberman, has been on most issues better than his predecessor -— and by the way intends to vote against the Baucus bill.
Considering they represent 0.3% of the US population, not likely.
But they have 2 whole senators, just like real states, and boy do those 2 senators like to throw their weight around.
...of course Odumbo was quick to announce the bipartisan agreement by saying both Democrats and RepublicanS...
He lies like a dog everytime he opens his mouth.
