CBS) A 6-year-old Cub Scout recently suspended from school after bringing a camping utensil to the lunchroom made it clear he was not happy with the Delaware school district's decision.
"I think it's very wrong. It's not fair at all," Zachary Christie of Newark, Del. told CBS' "The Early Show."
"It's not fair for anybody," he said.
Zachary's excitement over joining the Cub Scouts may just land him in reform school for 45 days.
Zachary was suspended from his 1st grade class in Delaware's Christina School District after bringing a camping utensil - a combination knife/fork/spoon - to use at lunch, prompting calls to reexamine schools' zero-tolerance policy for bringing weapons to school.
Asked why he brought it to school, Zachary said he just wanted to eat lunch with the tool. "It's just a cool camping utensil," he said. . . . .
. . . But the strict enforcement of the policy has its supporters.
"There is no parent who wants to get a phone call where they hear that their child no longer has two good seeing eyes because there was a scuffle and someone pulled out a knife," said George Evans, the school district board's president.
There has been a move to give school officials more flexibility in "weapon"-related incidents. After a third-grade girl was expelled for a year after bringing in a knife to cut the birthday cake her grandmother sent in to the class, a new law was passed allowing officials to modify punishments on a case-by-case basis. But that was for expulsions, not suspensions as Zachary is faced with. Another revision to the law is being drafted to address suspensions, according to the report. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/...n5381306.shtml

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye!!
And this is why America is on the decline. Mamas don’t let your babies go to school without bubble wrap...
This kid is likely to grow up Conservative and Activist. Good job, liberals!
oh, THIS has got to end and soon.

Parents could always move here to Texas. It is a little more sane about stuff like this.
Or home school their kids.
I have packed a pocket knife since I was around 7 years old. Feel absolutely naked without it. It is a good thing I no longer travel by airline anymore.
Simple, pull him out and home school him.
So any kid with a Scouting affiliation is automatically labeled as a weapon-owner.
If the eye-poke threshold is the standard for zero tolerance, it follows logically that pens and pencils are considered contraband throughout the disrict as well.
I agree that with such young children the “tool’ could be dangerous, and maybe the teacher should have just taken it away , called the parents and asked them to pick it up.
That communicates the problem , yet doesn’t make such a federal case out of it.
If I had brought a little knife to elementary school and the teacher saw it, yeah, she would have taken it to her desk and I could have it back at the end of the year. Problem solved.
There was a case recently where a kid got suspended for bringing a spork to school.
Rule 1: Don’t claim things are unfair. Claim things are discriminatory and biased and unnecessarily cruel. Rule 2: Walk don’t run to remove your child from any school where there is a reasonable expectation that six-year-olds will gouge each other’s eyes out with Cub Scout utensil sets.
Idiots.

From that article:
"It just seems unfair," said Zachary, who is being home-schooled while his mother, Debbie Christie, tries to fight the suspension. That involved Zachary appearing before a district disciplinary committee with his karate instructor and mother's fiancé vouching for him as character witnesses.
I can’t find the video, but I saw this flipping through the channels last night on CBS Evening News.

I heard on the radio the school has already back down on this.
And how the hell are you supposed to homeschool if the parents both work 60-70 hours per week?!?!
Insanity reigns on both sides of the aisle.
This inanity began when Al Sharpton and his ilk began to notice that more black kids than white were getting slapped for bringing in implements that they were clear were going to be used violently.
The screams of “racist” went to the rooftops.
So the administrators made it easy on themselves to dodge this kind of slander by factoring out any indication of intention. Instead the items themselves were banned. (I believe it’s still possible to stab an eye out with a pencil or pen.)
Live in a cheaper house?
Kids are a blessing and a responsibility.
Man, my 7 y.o. Wolf Cub is a juvenile deliquent, according to these idiots—his dad just bought a pocket knife for them to take on the Boy Scout camping trip in a week and a half....this is why we sacrifice to send them to a Catholic school with some common sense.
Kids today usually do not have the upbringing or discipline that you or I may have had.
Maybe this kid is ok with the knife, but kids get out of hand, show off, get goofy and then disaster. What would be wrong with a reasonable approach. And where does it say the kid went to “reform school”?? He was suspended for making a poor decision...bringing a knife to school when that was not part of the rules. If the parents don’t like the rule, have them attend a meeting (WHAT? Parents actually involved in their school???) and change the rules.
Maybe govt schools have gone astray ..well, they have...but where have the parents been? For over 40 years, things have been going down hill and now they are SHOCKED at how it has all turned out. Home school? Not always possible..and maybe the parents now should take responsibility for letting the teachers’ unions etc take “control”.
He must be a racist, homophobic, Nazi youth to be a member of cub scouts and possess a camping knife. A 45 day sentence in reform school is way too light. He should be taken from his irresponsible, rightwing, knuckle dragging parents, and deprogrammed. He should be put in the custody of a liberal, gay couple, and made to join an Obama glee club. I’m sure the school staff can arrange the sentencing.
How did these PC BASTARDS get so much power???
DARN IT, if I were king, any Scout item brought by a Scout in good standing to which the item has been issued and which is being borne in compliance with law and Scout regulations would not even be questioned.
Do these truly evil people not realize that a pencil could be just as good a weapon as a scout knife?
I suspect the do know and just use any excuse to attack those who would not submit.
Really simple:
The parents and citizens were too lazy to find out what was going on in their schools and then do something about it.
where are the parents when a teacher gets sued cause she chastized a student?
There are no PC Bastards without Parents/citizens who don’t get involved.
And HOW is that supposed to happen?
Parents and citizens have abdicated their power for the last 50 years over schools and at the same time undermined teachers, sued schools instead of disciplining their children, and too busy with their ( as in this case...) their “fiance”...sorry, but times have changed.
I have no children (if I did I would have home schooled) so I have no idea how young children who are enrolled in public or private school eat their lunches. If a meal is provided (like it was for $.25 back in the ‘60s) are eating utensils also provided, you know, the standard fork, spoon and knife? There, I said it, K-N-I-F-E. Ooooooo, scary.
This 6-year-old boy said he wanted to eat food with his Boy Scout tool, not poke or cut out another kid’s eye. It is really unfortunate the way innocent children are treated just for being kids.
3 fags, a lesbian, two commies and a transvestite on the school board decided that this kid was indeed a threat, carrying that vicious weapon onto campus.
I take it there are no eating utensils in this schools cafeteria. I got stuck with a pen in the eigth grade. Pens next?
“Zachary’s excitement over joining the Cub Scouts may just land him in reform school for 45 days.”
I was going to say that this would be ridiculous. But then I began to wonder which is worse: A six year old being thrown in with with a bunch of deranged teenagers for six weeks, or a six year old having his head messed with by delusional adults every day for 12 years.
“And where does it say the kid went to reform school?

School officials concluded that he had violated their zero-tolerance policy on weapons, and Zachary was suspended and now faces 45 days in the districts reform school.
I so agree with you.
Use discretion and expect the rules to be obeyed, contact the parents if they aren’t. In my day, 45 days in reform school would be NOTHING compared to my mom or dad having to come to school to talk with the teacher!
But NOW the mom and her “fiancee’ are center stage of the media as “victims”. Give me a break!
If parents had “control” of their kids, the school wouldn’t have to go through all these contortions!
I guess kids don’t have scissors for art anymore.
I’m guessing that the parents of this child weren’t parents when the “no tolerance” laws were passed. And maybe there were no such laws when they were in elementary school.
“faces” 45 days in reform school....
Which proves the point I am making. IF the parents had control over their kids, the schools wouldn’t need this..except for the most troubled youth.
The mother should have said “So sorry. I will discipline my child for not following the rules.”....but THAT was 50 years ago. Now she’s on TV.
Yep. It is all about destroying organizations that create healthy, physically capable, independent men. (Boy Scouts don’t want a nanny state, where the men are emasculated).
Take your children out of the public schools immediately. They destroy the minds of the young....make them into moral relativists who not only hate this country, but God.
Write some letters.
I have TWO Eagle Scouts as sons and this is my greatest joy. Maybe it's time for Scouting to begin pushing homeschooling and meet at homes.
she is a single mom with a “fiancee..”
Not buying “ignorance”...Nowadays there are PLENTY of notices to parents, maybe she didn’t bother to read them
or is one of the parents “My child is so sweet and perfect and would never do THAT”...Uh, huh.

The problem is Idiot school administrators (professionals) and idiots on school boards that have so little confidence in the judgement of their employees that they enact such stupid rules to begin with.
This is about avoiding legal responsibility for actions of teachers and administrators.
Since we are on that subject, the legal profession also deserves some criticism for this bull.
It is time to Flush most of Congress and the Senate. Downsize DC and bring some sanity back to the nation at the State and Local level. It is Past TIME.
You said she could have attended a meeting to address the “no tolerance” policy. (or that’s the way I took what you said.) The policy is not policy. It is law. And some people are that stupid and/or ignorant. The law is stupid, and I’m so thankful we didn’t live in that state when our son took a penknife to school in the second grade though we homeschooled our son for a while after he was such a bad, bad boy because his teacher was a little bit nuts at the time.
Who says she even knew he had taken it to school?
Where are the sane adults? Modify that--where are the adults?
vaudine
Yes, and beyond that they are free to interpret it as they please. BIG difference. The law is open-ended so it just depends on the people in charge and how much sleep they got last night, perhaps.
I only hope the parents have the good sense to pull the kid out permanently and home school.
My kid’s school allowed students to bring firearms with them to school during hunting season (or even outside hunting season so long as they let Sarge know ahead of time).
My grandson (7) took a Swiss army knife to school for show and tell. It was in a leather case, and he showed his bus driver, who reported it. The assistant superintendent called my son, who said my grandson should stay home the next day, until the superintendent got back and decided what to do with him. My grandson thought he was going to jail, I thought I would be stuck homeschooling, but we never heard from the school again, and this happened several weeks ago. He had the fear put into him, so all is well...I hope.
A sharpened pencil or ballpoint pen can easily penetrate the cranial vault via the eye socket.
My two sons (15 and 12) have carried pocket knives every day for years. We homeschool. When boys get big enough they should become proficient in combat arms.
“I believe its still possible to stab an eye out with a pencil or pen”
Or a finger, for pete’s sake.
