Nobel jury defends Obama decision

OSLO – Members of the Norwegian committee that gave Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize are strongly defending their choice against a storm of criticism that the award was premature and a potential liability for the U.S. president.

Asked to comment on the uproar following Friday's announcement, four members of the five-seat panel told The Associated Press that they had expected the decision to generate both surprise and criticism.

Three of them rejected the notion that Obama hadn't accomplished anything to deserve the award, while the fourth declined to answer that question. A fifth member didn't answer calls seeking comment.

"We simply disagree that he has done nothing," committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland told the AP on Tuesday. "He got the prize for what he has done."

Jagland singled out Obama's efforts to heal the divide between the West and the Muslim world and scale down a Bush-era proposal for an anti-missile shield in Europe.

He hasn't done any of those things. The Nobel must be replaced by a better prize that doesn't despise American interests.

Yea, once again the europeans have identified their favorite american uncle toms - Carter, Gore, Obama. Geez, they never did recognize Thatcher, Reagan, Pope Paul for ending the cold war without firing a shot. Shoosh - it must really be hard to be a Norwegian.

"Alfred Nobel wrote that the prize should go to the person who has contributed most to the development of peace in the previous year," Jagland said. "Who has done more for that than Barack Obama?"

Maybe Jagland could cite the feat of peace committed by obama in 2008.

“We simply disagree that he has done nothing,” committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland told the AP on Tuesday.

You're entitled to your own opinion; you're not entitled to you're own facts.

The fact is, he has done NOTHING -- except put the US into trillions of dollars of additional debt, take over the auto industry and attempt to take over the health care industry.

...oh, and talk. ...a LOT. ...mostly about himself.

...and play golf. ...and eat lobster.

It's not just that he hasn't done it, he hadn't done it by the end of the nomination process, this idiot, media-types keep talking about the state of the world as of the date the prize was awarded, ignoring the fact that it was submitted less than two weeks into 0bama's term. This guy should just shut up, because the more this argument goes on, the more they prove that this was nothing more than a giant middle finger to G.W. Bush.

Agreed!! Here is the real reason...

“Of course I expected disagreement and debate on the prize, on giving him the prize,” she said. “But what I want now is that we seriously raise a discussion regarding nuclear disarmament.”

It’s payment to Obama for pushing THEIR agenda.

Name one person, just one, in the annals of history that, eight months into the job, was worthy of such an honor.

Mother Teresa?
Mahatma Gandhi?
Nelson Mandela?

When one considers Jesus’ public ministry lasted more than three years, perhaps even He would not have merited similar recognition after mere months.

There is no way to interpret what the Nobel committee did as an honor well earned. If, in future years, Obama succeeds in transforming the world in the manner does what his public statements suggest, there could be a discussion about whether he merits recognition.

Now, it is so very early that there is no way at all to view the bestowing of this honor upon him as anything other than a political statement.

Really? What were you thinking?

Mother Teresa?
Mahatma Gandhi?
Nelson Mandela?

All that these people actually did was help their fellow man, inspire humaninty to take a closer look at themselves, and be an example of selflessness to the world.

But, they are no Obama. (thank God)

When your decision is greeted with laughter, and that reaction only intensifies as time passes, it’s time to reconsider the decision ... or at least keep quiet and hope that sensible people will forget your blunder. Defending such a silly decision only makes it look worse.

When the award was announced, Glenn Beck had a theory, that they thought 0bama was going to sail through, everything he said he wanted would occur, no problem, no objection by any of us, and that this prize would have been included in the *snowball* effect, as it were. They did not consider (or count on) how our system works, that 0bama's celebrity or popularity with the world could not guarantee things, and that ignorance of how this country operates made this award stand out like a sore thumb.

That made sense to me, they assumed he'd do all the things the left has been demanding us to do for years now, they anticipated and now find themselves scrambling to defend the decision.

Notice, also, that the prize is to be awarded to the person that has done the most to promote peace in the previous year.
