Commentary Magazine ^ | Oct. 13, 2009 | Abe Greenwald

All the diplomatic pillow talk about “cooperation” and “encouragement” is cover for Obama’s Russia gambit’s having gone down in flames. Smiling through failure is becoming the default occupation of the Obama State Department, and no one seems more enthused to be at the center of the wreckage than Hillary Clinton. She is pure spin, no success...

Trht be told, sanctions would not have stopped Iran from acquiring nukes. Besides, sanctions arguably take too long to have any affect.

I've heard Hillary still thinks she might one day be a President. She can not even realize that she does no longer exist as a viable politician.
Kind of a surprise for me. I always considered her shrewd. She went from tough as nails to a nail biter.

You’re right—they didn’t work with Saddam.

I always think of a blockade when I think of sanctions, but I realize this isn’t on the radar screen for most people. Still, a blockade would be easier than a war and just as effective.

Iran, of course, would attack our ships and have their navy & air force wiped out. Without imports and exports, they would collapse in a few months.

But no one is seriously considering this in the White House.

Hillary needs to be as tough on the Russians as she is on Bill.

Also, wasn’t it the get-Russia’s-help-on-sanctions thing the whole reason for stabbing the Poles and Czechs in the back re: missile defense?

Once again... nicely done, 0bama.

“Still, a blockade would be easier than a war and just as effective.”

But a blockade is an act of war, or has been considered such throughout human history. Even when you call it a “quarantine,” a la JFK. It isn’t the most effecient way to fight, but it can be relatively cheap and easy to stomach.

New heights in train-wreck diplomacy.

Obama is making Jimmy Carter and Cy Vance look like men of steely resolve.

I believe a few have mentioned the idea of a blockade. The problem is that a few does not equate to a majority vote on enacting such a sanction measure.
