MUNCIE, Ind. -- A 21-year-old military veteran fatally shot himself inside a central Indiana movie theater shortly after he argued with employees over being asked to produce ID to see an R-rated film, police said.
Muncie police said no one else was hurt at the theater, including the man's two brothers, a friend and eight others attending the horror comedy "Zombieland."

Selfish bastard
That’s why I offered prayers for his family, he is a selfish bastard to do that.
I guess that was the last straw......sad.....
My first thought as well.
Headline makes it sound like he did it because he got carded. Stupid writers.
Don’t know, but whoever the guy was that gave his drunken buddy the loaded gun was an idiot.
This story smells. There is more to this than getting “carded”.
agreed..something else was truly troubling this young man. For as troubled as he was, for his friend to give him a loaded gun just before this happened, is insane..
It’s so obvious he wasn’t in his right mind... I don’t think anyone can make a judgement call on this one. What a horrendous tragedy, and in front of his brothers, friends, strangers... Ptsd ...now his bros and strangers could possibly have it as a result of this.
Terrible headline!
It was the trip on a hair trigger to a decision he made long before he walked into that place. Could have been something as stupid as having to pay first at a gas pump. Horrible it happened, but at least he didn’t feel the need to take anyone with him.
Good conservative Christians also have some very down times that cause thoughts of suicide to creep into their minds.
Maybe if they had run out of butter for his popcorn we could blame it on that as well. Pretty dumb article.
I finally got the link to work.. It doesn’t say if he did it on purpose or not. I saw ptsd in the keywords on this thread and thought it was mentioned in the article..so I retract what I wrote. Don’t know if it was ptsd, or purpose or an accident at this point.
Probably delusional, too. My VA experience after Vietnam showed that those who talk big about how many "gooks they greased in 'Nam" were often cooks or supply clerks in rear areas.
Hey, its a Woody Harrelson movie after all. That can wee wee up people pretty quickly.
I saw this sort of behavior shortly after getting out in 1972. It was different then as it was much worse. We had no one to turn to and no help, but this soldier had all that and more.
Yet no one seemed to notice his pain and he ended it in the only way he knew.
It may seem difficult to believe, but even those who know the Lord can be driven to attempt suicide by intractable and hopeless pain, emotional agony, repetitive loss, and other heartaches. God offers comfort, but we do not always have the strength to reach out and take it.
I’m familiar with the situation of a believing young woman who had lost everything—husband, house, job, child, health—and is living in physical misery. She recently tried to take her life. Have some compassion for her broken heart and body.
I offer prayers as well
Depression is a devious bastard.
“This story smells. There is more to this than getting “carded”. “
I agree, there was a lot of info left out.
Yes. My bet is drinking and someone thinking a handgun didn’t have a round in the chamber. But something still doesn’t sound right in this report; his claim he killed 18 men in combat. Very few if any soldiers bring up the fact they have had to kill others while in combat to strangers. It just doesn’t happen and when it does subsequent investigations usually confirms it is made up.
So what Mos/Rate was this Vet? And what was his rank? We need to know a whole lot more about this vet.
And very patient.
Just another poor fool who was stupid enough to see a shrink.
I wouldn’t say that, he obviously was deeply disturbed, maybe mental problems?
That’s a good question too. When I read that he mentioned how”many people he killed” and that he was drunk, I originally thought he was offended at the implication that he didn’t look old enough to be there..and it reminds me of the people who say 18yr olds can go to war but not drink.
My question is whether the rest of the story will be reported. I really want to know if it was an accident or on purpose. My prayers go up for his friends, family and witnesses.. May God help them all.
Prayers for the vet and his family.
My thought too.
“Yes. My bet is drinking and someone thinking a handgun didn’t have a round in the chamber”
And if true, the author of the article sounds like he or she doesn’t like guns, or enjoys being an alarmist about guns. (Hearkening to the dhs claim that vets are right wing extremists who shouldn’t have guns—you probably know what I mean)
Are suicide missions a sin? A key advantage a religious warrior has over a non-religious one is they are more willing to accept suicide to help out their tribe. Religion is behind many suicides in this world that would not have otherwise happened. Some heroic suicides are thought to be good, at the same time the receiving end of them often consider the same actions evil.
That any theater would card someone for an R rated film is ridiculous. As long as they look like they are past puberty. That said I doubt the altercation affected his suicide decision. Killing yourself during zombieland i’d say was a statement of sorts. Prayers for his soul.
...Just to leave the mess for someone to have to clean up.
Thank you (NOT!) for using this tragedy as a personal soapbox.
And how in the world would you have ANY knowledge of the condition of this young man’s soul?
He and God will sort that out- thankfully without your inteference.

Remember this young man and fellow freeper?
I remember Chris. That happened about the same time a young man where I work killed himself. All very sad.
bttt
Take a flying leap!
Dreadful. RIP.
I disagree. It has nothing to do with being an atheist liberal. They can be very happy in their hedonism. Likewise, a conservative theist can be very miserable in the world and desperate to meet God.
