October 5, 2009 - Alexandria, Va. – A sweeping oceans and Great Lakes management policy document proposed by the Obama Administration will have a significant impact on the sportfishing industry, America’s saltwater anglers and the nation’s coastal communities. The draft policy, the Interim Report of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, issued on September 17, will govern federal Pacific and Atlantic Ocean waters and Great Lakes resource conservation and management and will coordinate these efforts among federal, state and local agencies. This past June, President Obama created the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, led by the Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), to develop a draft national policy and implementation strategy for conserving and managing the United States ocean territory and the Great Lakes.

I hope this makes my union-member son wake up. He lives to fish, and this is the one thing that could make him actually take notice of what’s going on in the US right now.

The US has a treaty with Canada over issues concerning the Great Lakes, it would require approval of all states bordering a lake and Canada before any law could be changed.

I couldn’t find anything in the report about banning fishing. It does mention overfishing, but sportsfishermen should know that’s a legitimate concern. Not that I trust Obama people to do a good job, but if someone can find where in the report it proposes banning sport fishing, please post it.

It’s none of the federal government’s business who fishes and where. Show me anything in the Constitution that mentions fishing . . . or for that matter, abortion, penumbras, privacy, 3 gallons per flush, automobile seatbelts, healthcare, and on and on ad naseum. IT’S NOT THERE!

I don’t care if it mentions overfishing or not . . . it’s not in the Constitution!!!!!!!! Is this thing on??????

Food control. With the bills underway, you won't be able to grow food in a home garden and now you won't be able to fish. Hunting is already pretty restricted. Farms in central CA have been devastated by loss of water in favor of the damn "snail darter". Lots of folks are going to be starving as this plan unfolds.

What type of fishing does your kid go for?
Inshore or offshore?
And where about does he go?
Now as for St. Augustine, How long ya been there?
Ye miss the old bridge?
NO good fisherman likes being told anything specially directions or that he can’t fish here.

Wife and I spent two days at a ded & breakfast about three blocks off the fort. Neat place and we had a great time.
Been there about 4 times and had a great time every visit.\
Sailed the fort area on a Hobie cat too.

I don’t believe fishing laws are included. I live 15mins from Ontario and the laws(and fees) are very different from each other. The law you mention I think concerns diverting water for agriculture and discharge levels for pollution. If BHO outlawed fishing, Canada would hit the jackpot for tourists.
Knowing this guy, he’ll problably raise the fees to the level only the elite could afford.

When Don Willy Schaefer went from Mayor of Baltimore (formerly the post of Pelosi’s dad and then her brother)to governor of Maryland, a friend who works Annapolis warned me that he was going to regulate the entire state like Baltimore City. Sure enough he did. Finally the legislature rebelled and put a stop to it when he proposed a $50 a year license for “chicken-necking” for crabs, a favorite pastime of small boys and old folks. Watch out America, here comes Ci-cago.

It is on federal land. You’re right that it’s not in the constitution. But that’s a fight long ago lost—Jefferson bought Louisiana without constitutional authority. We have an entire national park system that isn’t mentioned in the constitution, and federal lands.

Many years ago I casually dated a fellow working in DC. He was at the near-top of the food chain of the department that has oversight for national parks, government lands and the like.

He invited me to a weekend away. He explained that the government had many maintained off the books retreats and locations used by government peoples mostly Senators and upper level aids. He gave me my choice of several different locations. I didnt like him and didnt take him up on his offer.

There is this:

The Constitution provides, in Article 4, Section 3, Clause 2: The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any particular State.

So that leads to the question of who controls the coastal waters, etc. It pretty much ends the debate about areas owned by the fed gov.

You’re certainly not referring to the “republican” tent, are you?

Because for years now they have been welcoming with open arms those who espouse sodomy and prenatal infanticide.... just like the “other progressive party”.

Conservative, Constitutionalist Evangelical Christians however, seem to be “persona non gratia” and are quickly shown the back door of said “big tent”.

Try to run for anything as a pro-Life Conservative up here in Maine with Sen. Oly Snowes’ personal private party and you’ll find out pretty frickin’ quick just how “big” this “tent” is...

...And where the back door is located.

In theory, I'm in favor of managing our natural resources, including managing our fisheries. There have been cases in the past where, without good stewardship, fisheries were decimated. The Chesapeake Bay comes to mind. I think it's come back quite a bit now after having been ravaged. I worked in a kitchen in the area, and found it quite sad that "Maryland" crab cakes contained Venezualan crab meat.

I doubt that the Obama team will merely manage our fisheries responsibly. I'm sure they will show themselves to be enviro-whackos. But that doesn't mean wildlife management is a bad thing.

There is the question of jurisdiction, but like most Constitutional questions, it's merely an intellectual exercise. Fedzilla can pretty much do as it pleases.

Anyway, I didn't see any ban of sportfishing in the report. And in theory, there are cases where sportfishing DOES need to be limited. I wish sport fisherman were all responsible stewards, but we know they aren't. That's why there are size limits etc.

I'm a sport fisherman in a densely populated state, so I have some understanding and sympathy for regulation. If we didn't have regulations here in NJ, the damn russians would have caught and eaten every fish in NJ by now.
