.- The semi-official Vatican daily, LOsservatore Romano, has called the decision to award President Obama with the Nobel Peace Prize premature and more of an invitation to choose peace through politics. The award is also questionable because of his position on various bio-ethics issues, especially abortion.
The article points out that the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Barack Obama has taken everyone somewhat by surprise, first and foremost the U.S. president himself.
During the last 90 years, L'Osservatore noted, the prize has never been awarded to a sitting U.S. presidentwhen it was awarded to Jimmy Carter in 2002 he had been out of office already for some time[but was] involved in politics and susceptible, therefore, to making a range of decisions related to peace.
Perhaps for this reason, the newspaper said, Analysts have almost unanimously interpreted his selection as a way of pressuring Obama to make pacifist choices as his administration continues forward.
L'Osservatore also questioned the administratoion's actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying that the decisions seem aimed at trying to find a middle way between fidelity to the pacifist statements made during the campaign season and a more realistic policy, which some have defined as a continuation of that of the warmonger Bush.
This back-and-forth policy, the paper observed, is very similar to the approach that Obama has taken to the great bioethics issues, with abortion being first and foremost. His way of doing things has generated great controversy among Catholics in the country, the daily added.
The Vatican newspaper also brought to mind Mother Teresa being honored with the Peace Prize in 1979, and said, Obama ought to recall that in 1979 he was preceded by Mother Teresa, who had the courage to state in her acceptance speech that the harshest war with the greatest number of fallen is the practice of abortion, legalized and facilitated as well by the international structures.
Pointing out an inconsistency, L'Osservatore noted that Pope John Paul II was a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for year but was never chosen for the award, not even in 2003 after his condemnation of the war in Iraq.
Pope Wojtyla was considered by the members of the committee as too conservative in other areas, and they feared that awarding it to him would been seen as favoring the Catholic Church over other religions. Their fears were evidently overcome in the much more controversial case of the selection of Obama, the Vatican daily said, noting that the selection process has become mired in being politically correct.
Nevertheless, the article concluded, at the same time, as the director of the Holy Sees Press Office has stated, we cannot help but rejoice at the recognition of President Obamas efforts at nuclear disarmament and his personal disposition towards a policy that seeks peace more than the affirmation of U.S. power in the world.
If they would have described it as “inappropriate” or “unacceptable” or “an act of degeneracy” it would have been more truthful than “premature”.
Yes, it was a premature exhilaration.............
What a joke after giving Mr Abortion (Kennedy) the fancy shmancy funeral and last rites. Doesn’t Nancy P get communion every week?
Please, stop lecturing on abortion and then not following up with actions.
It’s a claer case of Premature Immaculation by the nitwits in Oslo.
But I understand the general tensor of your objection: "the Vatican" (by which I mean the clerical buraucracy which runs the church government) has been characterized by "Good Doctrine; Bad Discipline" for years, and if you can't think of a dozen pathetic examples right off the top of your head, I can do so myself.
As for U.S. bishops and their toleration --- and/or celebration --- of pro-abort politicos: they are ignoring the Church's own Supreme Court ("Apostolic Signatura") which has ruled that such politicians should be given neither Holy Communion nor funerary honors upon their death.
Yes, Abp. Wuerl of Washington DC non-compliant, even disobedient per Canon Law.
I hope the democrats keep abortion in the health care bill. It is the only way the Catholic Church will oppose the stupid bill.
Otherwise the Bishops are in FAVOR of National Socilism in America’s healthcare.
Analysts have almost unanimously interpreted his selection as a way of pressuring Obama to make pacifist choices as his administration continues forward.
"Pressuring" sounds so much better that bribing . . .The Nobel Peace Prize committee is a creature of the parliament of Norway (at the time of Nobel's death not independent of Sweden), and as such acceptance of its award by an American president should be seen as subject to the strictures of the Constitution:
Article I Section 9:
No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.Congress (presently under Democratic control) can obviously authorize Mr. Obama to accept the present from a creature of the Norwegian government - but since present law stipulates that gifts to the POTUS are the property not of the officeholder but of the US government, I presume it would take an act of Congress to authorize Mr. Obama to dispose of it on his own authority.
What about this Vatican statement of a few days ago?
Vatican: Award to Obama engenders hope for nuclear disarmament

Vatican City - The Roman Catholic Church ‘salutes with appreciation,’ the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to US President Barack Obama, the Vatican spokesman said Friday.
The appreciation is viewed ‘particularly in light of the commitment shown by the President towards the promotion of international peace and recently in favour of nuclear disarmament,’ spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said.
‘It is hoped that this important recognition will continue to encourage such a difficult but fundamental effort for the future of humanity,’ Lombardi added.
People don't realize just how true this is.
I wrote an article that was published in L'Osservatore Romano's Weekly Edition in English this past July. If a Freeper can write for L'Osservatore Romano, how much control does "the Vatican" really have over it?

Kuehl! Can you give us a LINK?
:o)
It will be a sub clause in a section of womens health, never mentioned by name but a wink an a nod will get you the abortion.
That is how they will sneak it through, in plain sight.
I haven't seen you around in a long time. I hope things are going well for you.

Actually all they need to do is NOT mention it at all in the bill. THe USSC has ruled that if abortion is not mentioned in a healthcare providers coverage plan then it is assumed to be covered.
That is why they say it isn’t in the bill.
A link is in post # 12 (I reposted it to a blog.)
The Vatican only keeps articles from L’Osservatore Romano on the Vatican website for one week. They do not have an online archive of past editions on the Vatican website.
Hi sitetest!
Thanks. I’m still kicking, and newly back to FReepin’
Oh-— of course. (Embarrassed I didn’t notice.) I’ll check it out.
