When I was a youth in public school back in the early 70s, everyone was called a fag or worse from time to time. There were fights but students rarely got hurt and never very seriously. After the fights the combatants were sometimes taken to the vice principal’s office for swats.

No one was ever shot.

Why haven't you heard more about these incidents? Well, sadly, homophobic harassment in our schools is so commonplace that it is no longer news.

Well, one thing’s for sure—if you shoot and kill a guy for calling you a faggot, that guy isn’t going to be calling you a faggot anymore. It might deter others from calling you a faggot as well. Eventually, word will get around that you don’t like being called a faggot and maybe people will stop calling you a faggot for fear of being shot dead by a faggot. Kevin Jennings should try this out for himself.

Whatever happened to adults giving that old-school annoying altho useful advice that “sticks and stone may break my bones, but names will never hurt me”?

Nobody says that anymore. Words are dangerous things these days. There are so many of them that you can’t say.
