Terry Krepel of Media Matters and ConWebWatch took issue with my claim that "reporting" on the allegedly questionable circumstances of the death of Glenn Beck's mother would constitute a smear.
Terry decided to engage me in the comments to try and make me explain why it was inappropriate for his organization to make Beck's deceased mother a ball in the political football game:

I’ve debated Krepel many times in the past and probably will many times in the future. He doesn’t give up easily. Chances are he’ll reply. And if he doesn’t then I’ll be bringing it up every time he attacks us either from Media Matters or ConWebWatch.
Ah! Thanks. Please keep us posted.
Lots of us have had it with the left.
We’re just sitting here and waiting.....
Sadly one of the most bizaare twisted attacks I’ve seen on Glenn Beck came from right here at FR yesterday. Apparently the poster feels that Beck is secretly a muslim showing disrespect for Chuck Norris.

There is no low too low for the demons.
No surprise.
Library fines, no doubt. The left has a way with exaggerating charges, so they’ll think of something to do with those late charges!
No question that it was a smear, and a smear based on tactics used against Sarah Palin—attacking her family ruthlessly.
How it works is to distract attention from Beck’s actual arguments to family matters. “Beck lied when he said his mother committed suicide. She died in an accident.”
What does that accomplish? First, Beck is smeared as a liar. Second, his mother’s suicide or non-suicide is brought to the public’s attention. The idea, obviously, is to suggest that Beck comes from a crazy, dysfunctional family. His mother committed suicide. Or she didn’t commit suicide, but he thinks she did, which is even worse. Or he’s a liar. Or maybe all three? What does it matter? Beck is a crazy, dysfunctional liar coming from a crazy dysfunctional family.
Well. That certainly moved the argument away from what Beck actually said—for instance, that Obama is a racist and a liar. We wouldn’t want to talk about THAT, because there might actually be some truth in it. Better to demonstrate that Beck is crazy, and not look too closely at what he actually says.
Challenging Beck’s version of the event seems mean spirited and I’m not sure what they expect to gain. That being said, if Beck talks about it publically he invites scrutiny.
If he doesn’t want it discussed then he shouldn’t discuss it. Beck is a public figure who is hated by the left, this kind of attack could be expected.
Mrs. Kelley retired in 1981, after her performance was questioned in the deaths of two patients during surgery and doctors tried to force her to work more closely under the supervision of anesthesiologists. In one case, the family of the patient sued Mrs. Kelley and a surgeon, but settled out of court; in the other, the state medical examiner, who had been appointed by her son,Bill Clinton, issued a ruling that cleared Mrs. Kelley. Mr. Clinton was between terms as Governor at the time, and both he and his mother said no influence was brought to bear.

Lots of car wrecks are actually suicides bet get reported as “accidents”. The cops often are doing the family a favor by reporting a questionable wreck as an “accident” as it avoids problems with insurance.
The folks at Media Matters are lower than the lowest piece of whale excrement at the bottom of the ocean!
At least Glenns mother was not a terrorist or commie like Obam’s was..

Yes, and I'm secretly Amish living a twisted double life as a computer specialists in Houston Texas. Oh yeah. All your Chuck Norris' are belong to us. ;-)
These people are sick.
That is precisely the technique used on troublesome critics in the Soviet Union.
Declare them insane and put them in a mental hospital. All of the neighbors then "know" he really was just a lunatic, and they also "know" that they should avoid being lunatics as well.
