It was the most lukewarm and indirect of endorsements, delivered in the conditional tense, and coming from a presidential spokesman, no less.
But for William C. Thompson Jr., the Democratic nominee for mayor, the surprising comments Friday made by Robert Gibbs, President Obamas press secretary, that Mr. Obama would support the Democratic nominee was tantamount to a life preserver in his uphill battle to unseat Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.
--snip--
The comments prompted Mr. Thompson, the city comptroller, to quickly issue a statement titled Yes We Can in New York City: President Barack Obama Supports Bill Thompson for Mayor. And in that statement, Mr. Thompson milked the words as much as possible, saying: I am grateful and encouraged to receive the support of the president of the United States, especially on the day that Barack Obama is named a Nobel Prize Winner.
Mr. Thompson added, I am deeply honored and thank our president for his support and confidence that I will be the next mayor of New York City.

Wha up wit da change?
William Thompson. I thought I heard the sound of some Fred heads exploding.
I prefer a Democratic Mayor to Bloomberg anyday!
Bloomberg is a slimeball. He is as liberal as Obama. Hides under the banners of: Republican, Independent and the rest.
Obama endorses Mr. Thompson? I thought Obama WAS Mr. Thompson! [Atlas shrugged reference] Weasley Mouch at least.
Big Bil Thompson was the last GOP Mayor of Chicago and an associate of Al Capone,
I would shed no tears if Bloomberg got defeated but it looks like he will win again. He should be thrown out for no other reason than his slimy maneuvers to change the law and get rid of the 2 term limit. But New Yorkers apparently don’t care. To them, Bush was a greater threat to them than the terrorists, so this little power grab is nothing I guess.
Only good thing about Bloomberg winning is that it will technically keep the Dems out of city hall again. No one on the Demo line has been elected mayor in 20 years. If Christie and McDonnell also win the Dems will have lost all the major off year races. Not that the Dems have any problems with Bloomberg, as he is essentially one of them.
I'm not sure the example you cite is such a good thing, given all the damage Bloomberg has done but ...
Definitely a Good Thing to come out of a Bloomberg win would be the defeat of someone claiming support from His Awesomeness. Small comfort, I suppose.
