Got curious about how the media in Norway is playing the Nobel Peace Prize decision (I read/write Norwegian fluently), so I check out the Aftenposten (largest daily) this morning.
Found one of those opinion poll widgets on their site- vote on if you think the prize to Obama was correct.
62% of Aftenposten's own Norwegian readers voted not vs 37% who voted yes. Just thought you'd be interested in how it plays out over there.
Swedish dailies are pretty much skewing this as a stupid joke the Norwegians have created (to be expected...Swedes love to laugh at dumb stuff their next door neighbors do).

He will spend 6 million in taxpayer funds to jet hhis entourage to Oslo, to receive the Nobel Peace Prize of 1.2 to 1.5 million US ( depending how much money the Obama presses print that day.).

Heard a caller to talk radio this morning suggest that Norway gave the prize to O to appease the muslims who rioted when the cartoon was published in Norway.

All Nobel prizes are in Sweden EXCEPT the so-called peace prize which is Norway. Very confusing.
I believe the peace prize is awarded in Sweden. At least it used to be, unless that has been changed. Nobel was Swedish.
Why should Norway be judged by a few ignorant people on a committee? Norway did not join the European Union and they have kept their own currency. Quisling was from Norway, but he hardly represented the Norwegian people.
This makes sense. The Mulsims riot in Malmo Sweden, Norway and constantly in the suburb (slums) of Paris.
How many Norwegians are on this committee? Who exactly IS on the committee? Maybe we could just enter those people in the arsehole hall of fame.
The Nobel organization is going to end up having to jettison it, or it will pull down the value of the hard-sciences prizes. That may not be possible under the terms of Nobel's bequest.

At the time Nobel lived, Sweden ruled Norway. Sweden conducted foreign policy for both Sweden and Norway. The Norwegian parliament only conducted business governing the internal politics of Norway. Nobel choose the Norwegian parliament to select a committee because he felt it would be less influenced by considerations of national foreign policy. Now, of course, Norway and Sweden are two separate nations.

There are 5 people on the committee. They are selected by the Norwegian parliament. I don't know their names, but they do belong in the hall of fame you named.
The rest of the Nobel prizes are awarded in Sweden. I thought the peace prize was as well, but I have just read that it is awarded in Oslo, Norway.
Nobel was a Swede, but let a committee of the Norwegian parliament decide the peace prize.
Afterwards it was seen as a gesture of peace and goodwill, but maybe it was just a sop to the Norwegians to keep them from pushing for full independence.
The academies that award the other prizes are Swedish and the ceremony is in Stockholm. The ceremony for the peace prize is in Oslo.

By law, gifts to the POTUS are gifts to the U.S. government, not the person. It needs an act of Congress to entitle Mr. Obama to accept even the honor, let alone a million bucks, from the government of Norway - or any body which is a creature thereof.Ignorance of that law wouldn't be much of an excuse in any event.

If only the Nobel committee had given one to Hitler and Chamberlain for the Munich Agreement in 1938. Think how different the world would be today.

I guess those days of individual freedom and courage are long gone from the viking countries.
Living as I do in area populated by thousands of Norwegians, one of worst insults a Norwegian can hurl at someone is to call them a dirty Swede.
