Forty-four percent favor stricter laws on firearm sales

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup finds a new low of 44% of Americans saying the laws covering firearm sales should be made more strict. That is down 5 points in the last year and 34 points from the high of 78% recorded the first time the question was asked, in 1990.

Do You Feel That Laws Covering the Sale of Firearms Should Be Made More Strict, Less Strict, or Kept as They Are Now?

Today, Americans are as likely to say the laws governing gun sales should be kept as they are now (43%) as to say they should be made more strict. Until this year, Gallup had always found a significantly higher percentage advocating stricter laws. At the same time, 12% of Americans believe the laws should be less strict, which is low in an absolute sense but ties the highest Gallup has measured for this response.

These results are based on Gallup's annual Crime Poll, conducted Oct.1-4 this year.

"Compared with views in 2000, each major demographic or attitudinal subgroup has shown a shift toward a more pro-gun stance on the question about whether gun laws should be more strict or less strict."

The poll also shows a new low in the percentage of Americans favoring a ban on handgun possession except by the police and other authorized persons, a question that dates back to 1959. Only 28% now favor such a ban. The high point in support for a handgun-possession ban was 60% in the initial measurement in 1959. Since then, less than a majority has been in favor, and....

--snip--

Still, the current poll marks the first time Gallup has not found a significantly higher proportion of Americans preferring tighter gun-sale regulations...

As an amazing thing, on DemocraticUnderground I'm seeing a lot of pro-gun people on their gun threads.

No thanks to RINO’s. If the GOP/RNC figured out that if they attack the left, keep the pressure on them and return liberties and rights and income to average people, the will win.

Instead we get go slow socialism.

But will New Yorkers ever change on the issue?

I know a good number of democrats who are pro gun. But for some reason there is a serious disconnect between them-their party-and gun control.

They don’t “see” the efforts of the party towards total gun control and confiscation, its alarming really.

Even with the change, there are some subgroups among whom a majority continues to favor stricter gun laws, including liberals (67%), Democrats (66%), Easterners (59%), gun non-owners (57%), postgraduates (55%), women (55%), and nonwhites (51%).

Are these the sorts of people the Founding Fathers intended to have running the show?

Stupid is as stupid does. I don't care as long as SCOTUS incorporates the Second Amendment and treats all infringements like they treated the poll tax.

I’m pleased about the results but I’ll be more pleased when people realize that leaving gun laws as they are is still an infringement. All gun laws currently on the books related to the purchase, possession, type, rate of fire, carrying, storage and non-vicimizing use of firearms need to be abolished.

Either their arms got too tired, or they ran out of rocks to turn over, to continue "finding" the morons.

Good news, but stock up and be vigilant. Join the NRA/NSSF/GOA, stay informed, and vote accordingly.

Even though there aren’t any serious movements toward gun control right now, I’m buying ammo and accessories like never before. The Left wants gun ownership heavily restricted, if not outright banned. It WILL happen eventually, because the Left never quits when they want something. They are very patient, and will move in small “reasonable” steps that would take 20 years if necessary. The only way to slow down the left is to mightily resist them when they try further restrictions.

More than anything, it helps when gun grabbing politicians are voted out of office. The years of 1994 and 2000(perhaps even 2004) together struck FEAR in the hearts of politicians. Those election years taught them that if you support gun control, you WILL lose control of congress, and you CAN lose a presidential election.

The next heavy handed gun control we will see will come after 2012, if Hussein is reelected, and the dems still control the Congress in large numbers. That’s when we will see the return of the 1994 “Assault Weapons” ban, or worse. Hopefully the Congress will turn more in our favor before then, and Hussein will be a one term president, that would put it off for a few years. Until then, we have no idea what the future will bring, so BUY BUY BUY... When it comes to anything to do with firearms in this day ang age, you can’t have too much of anything! Pretty soon, I’m gonna need another safe. lol

Judging by their hoplophobia, no.

I realize the number supporting gun laws is declining and that’s great news, but I am nevertheless stunned that a full 44% of Americans actually still support gun-grabbing.

I hope every last lefty who doesn’t support the Second Amendment and wants to restrict or eliminate gun ownership becomes a victim of a violent crime. Normally I wouldn’t say such a thing, but they need a wake-up call.
