Obama, the 1980s commie left "peace" movement in New York, and "total nuclear disarmament"
various sources

From Obama's recent speech in Cairo:

"No single nation should pick and choose which nations hold nuclear weapons. That is why I strongly reaffirmed America’s commitment to seek a world in which no nations hold nuclear weapons."

IPS’s [Institute For Policy Studies] Washington, DC headquarters quickly became a resource center for national reporters and a place for KGB agents from the nearby Soviet embassy to convene and strategize. Cora Weiss headed one of the IPS's most successful forays -- into Riverside Church in Manhattan. She was invited there in 1978 by the Reverend William Sloane Coffin to run the church's Disarmament Program, which sought to consolidate Soviet nuclear superiority in Europe -- in the name of "peace." In 1982 Weiss helped organize the largest pro-disarmament demonstration ever held. Staged in New York City, the rally was attended by a coalition of communist organizations. During her decade-long tenure at Riverside, which became home to the National Council of Churches, Weiss regularly received Russian KGB agents, Sandinista friends, and Cuban intelligence agents. Weiss became infamous for her role in the psychological warfare conducted against U.S. prisoners of war held in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam War.

The Liberation News Service, which is a news source for hundreds of "alternative" publications nationwide (with antiwar, Marxist-oriented perspectives), was founded in 1967 with IPS assistance."

Obama and the case of the missing 'thesis'
By Jim Popkin, NBC News Senior Investigative Producer
July 24, 2008

excerpt:

The hunt for Obama’s senior “thesis” began with a throwaway line in a newspaper article last October. The New York Times story, on Obama’s early New York years, mentioned in passing that the presidential contender had majored in political science at Columbia and had spent his time “writing his thesis on Soviet nuclear disarmament.”

Journalists began hounding Columbia University for copies of the musty document. Conservative bloggers began wondering if the young Obama had written a no-nukes screed that he might come to regret. And David Bossie, the former congressional investigator and “right-wing hit man,” as one newspaper described him, took out classified newspaper ads in Columbia University’s newspaper and the Chicago Tribune in March searching for the term paper.

Bossie came up dry, but said the effort was well worth it:

“A thesis entitled Soviet Nuclear Disarmament, written at the height of The Cold War in 1983, might shed some light upon what Barack Obama thought about our most pressing foreign policy issue for 40-plus years (U.S.-Soviet Relations),” he wrote in an e-mail to NBC News.

Here is the passage from the New York Times that the above article refers to:

"He barely mentions Columbia, training ground for the elite, where he transferred in his junior year, majoring in political science and international relations and writing his thesis on Soviet nuclear disarmament. He dismisses in one sentence his first community organizing job — work he went on to do in Chicago — though a former supervisor remembers him as 'a star performer.'"

[snip]

"he [Obama] declined repeated requests to talk about his New York years, release his Columbia transcript or identify even a single fellow student, co-worker, roommate or friend from those years.

'He doesn’t remember the names of a lot of people in his life,' said Ben LaBolt, a campaign spokesman."

Obama Pledges Cuts in Missile Defense, Space, and Nuclear Weapons Programs

February 29, 2008 :: News
MissileThreat.com

A video has surfaced of Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama talking on his plans for strategic issues such as nuclear weapons and missile defense.

The full text from the video, as released, reads as follows:

Thanks so much for the Caucus4Priorities, for the great work you've been doing. As president, I will end misguided defense policies and stand with Caucus4Priorities in fighting special interests in Washington.

First, I'll stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq. I'm the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president I will end it.[i.e. not win it]

Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.

I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.

I will not weaponize space.

I will slow our development of future combat systems.

And I will institute an independent "Defense Priorities Board" to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.

Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop new nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert [they are NOT on "hair-trigger alert" now -etl], and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.

You know where I stand. I've fought for open, ethical and accountable government my entire public life. I don't switch positions or make promises that can't be kept. I don't posture on defense policy and I don't take money from federal lobbyists for powerful defense contractors. As president, my sole priority for defense spending will be protecting the American people. Thanks so much.

2008 Pentagon Report (March 2008):
China's Growing Military Space Power

By Leonard David
Special Correspondent, SPACE.com
March 6, 2008

GOLDEN, Colorado — A just-released Pentagon report spotlights a growing U.S. military concern that China is developing a multi- dimensional program to limit or prevent the use of space-based assets by its potential adversaries during times of crisis or conflict.

Furthermore, last year's successful test by China of a direct-ascent, anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon to destroy its own defunct weather satellite, the report adds, underscores that country's expansion from the land, air, and sea dimensions of the traditional battlefield into the space and cyber-space domains.

Although China's commercial space program has utility for non- military research, that capability demonstrates space launch and control know-how that have direct military application. Even the Chang'e 1 — the Chinese lunar probe now circling the Moon — is flagged in the report as showcasing China's ability "to conduct complicated space maneuvers — a capability which has broad implications for military counterspace operations."

Global nuclear disarmament is insane. Let's say all the world's powers agree. They dismantle their weapons. And then, suddenly, some podunk republic announces it has the bomb.

How is that podunk republic gonna be disarmed?

Communists Flourish in Patriotic America

“They that are on their guard and appear ready to receive their adversaries are in much less danger of being attacked than the supine, secure and negligent.” Benjamin Franklin.

Benjamin Franklin understood the incredible challenges our country would face all those years ago. He knew that competing interests would rally for control of government entities and actions.

Let us not be negligent in understanding America’s adversaries and the tactics they employ. Our country is based on the concepts of freedom and respect for individual liberties. These privileges can be abused as evidenced throughout history. Our rights have been the target of many schemes, attacks and manipulations.

Our founding fathers feared this threat even in the early years of our country “political parties provoke the mischief of associations and combinations,” stated George Washington. The father of our country would be astonished to learn just how right he was and American citizens must work to understand the facts behind the scenes played out on our televisions and in the halls of our government institutions.

The basic premises of American Government are tested once again as the anti-war rally and calls to action build in intensity. Many people at this point will say, “Free speech and the right to protest are rights of all Americans.” When free speech becomes treasonous, betraying our government and citizens in an attempt to manipulate our rule of law it is no longer the right of every citizen.

Ion Mihai Pacepa stated in an article in the Washington Times, October 2, 2003, “Our Western left-wing organizations, like the World Peace Council, existed for the sole purpose of spreading propaganda we gave them. These very same groups bray the exact same themes to this day.” Mr. Pacepa understands communist propaganda very well. The “we” that he refers to is the KGB and the communist party. He is reportedly the highest-ranking intelligence officer ever to have defected from the former Soviet bloc and he has written extensively on Anti-Americanism and its origins.

Judith Leblanc attended a recent gathering of the World Peace Conference, Athens, Greece, 2004. She was there with three of her associates to represent Americans and the Communist Party, USA. Leblanc also represents United for Peace and Justice, one of the major factions behind the anti-war movement in America. “We in the peace movement must find new ways to facilitate the joint action of the religious, trade union, women, youth and students in the political arena and defeat the elected officials who preach war,” stated Leblanc at a recent organizational event.

Banners at upcoming protests across the United States and Europe will echo the communist mantra. The People’s Weekly World Newspaper, a communist/socialist publication is working to “raise spirits and funds from coast to coast.” The periodical has several reoccurring themes common to many radical news sources.

One consistent theme is dealing defeat to the communist’s adversary, and working within the Democrat party. Radfest 2004, Williams Bay, Wisconsin June 4-6 sponsored by Patrick Barrett and the Havens Center, University of Wisconsin is one example. Activists from across the U.S joined to discuss staggering goals like “replacing Bush, ending the war in Iraq, reforming the mass media, and inclusively building the movement for change.”

Taking the social in socialism seriously was the topic for Erik Olin Wright, Department of Sociology, University of Wisconsin, Madison. Community driven neighborhood change was featured by We the People media group.

Organizing for media justice was featured in a talk given by Robert McChesney. He is a professor of communication at the University of Illinois and serves as a good example of the quality of education in our highest educational facilities. His left leaning philosophy is available on the website http://www.robertmcchesney.com/.

Ron Blascoe, representing union community activists spoke on labor rights and lessons for a new labor movement. Other topics included, how to form a progressive movement on a conservative campus, organizing for change, our democracy, and our airwaves. Latinos are working with “Get your GSA On!” (Gay, Straight alliance).

Many in the news media are guilty of blameworthy indifference as they neglect to inform the American public of the forces rallying against our way of life. Americans dutifully turn on their evening news in an effort to learn the important events of the day. They become victims of a massive propaganda war with more coverage of the latest plastic surgery and diet fads than reports of substance on things vital to the future stability and security of America.

The overriding talk of communist, left and progressive forces in our country is to fully engage in this struggle at the ballot box. These activists are working diligently to move America in the direction of socialism. Allen Ruff, self proclaimed independent historian, and radical scholar provides a look inside the socialist mind in his book, “We called each other comrade.”

A patriot and a communist are two different things. Liberals consistently refuse to acknowledge this fact, while promoting socialism under the pretext of equality for all.

By Kathy Gibson Boatman
The establishment of an American Soviet government will involve the confiscation of large landed estates in town and country, and also, the whole body of forests, mineral deposits, lakes, rivers and so on.” - William Z. Foster, National Chairman of the Communist Party USA, 1932

I've thought all along that Obama and his international team are a bunch of adolescents stuck on the 1980s "nuclear freeze" movement. I really though the end of the Cold War had put these people in drydock forever, but I guess I was wrong.

They had very little popular support for their views in the 1980s, and they have even less today.

[2009] Russia, China plan new joint military exercises

By MARTIN SIEFF, UPI Senior News Analyst
Published: March 26, 2009

WASHINGTON, March 26 (UPI) -- The continuing tensions over Russia's refusal to sell its state-of-the-art land warfare advanced weapons systems to China hasn't interrupted the rhythm of major joint military exercises between the two major land powers on the Eurasian landmass. The latest in the regular, biennial series of exercises between the two nations has been confirmed for this summer.

The next in the now well-established series of exercises called Peace Mission 2009 will be carried out in northeastern China, the Russian Defense Ministry announced March 18, according to a report carried by the RIA Novosti news agency.

The first bilateral Peace Mission maneuvers -- described at the time as counter-terrorism exercises -- were held in Russia and the eastern Chinese province of Shandong in August 2005. As we reported at that time, they were a lot bigger than mere counter-terrorism exercises. Warships, squadrons of combat aircraft and more than 10,000 troops were involved carrying out landings against hypothetically hostile shores. The maneuvers also involved large-scale paratroops drops. The scale and nature of those exercises suggested a trial run for a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan with Russian support. ..."

Russia, China flex muscles in joint war games
August 17, 2007

CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Russia and China staged their biggest joint exercises on Friday but denied this show of military prowess could lead to the formation of a counterweight to NATO.

"Today's exercises are another step towards strengthening the relations between our countries, a step towards strengthening international peace and security, and first and foremost, the security of our peoples," Putin said.

Fighter jets swooped overhead, commandos jumped from helicopters on to rooftops and the boom of artillery shells shook the firing range in Russia's Ural mountains as two of the largest armies in the world were put through their paces.

The exercises take place against a backdrop of mounting rivalry between the West, and Russia and China for influence over Central Asia, a strategic region that has huge oil, gas and mineral resources.

Russia's growing assertiveness is also causing jitters in the West. Putin announced at the firing range that Russia was resuming Soviet-era sorties by its strategic bomber aircraft near NATO airspace.

War Games: Russia, China Grow Alliance
September 23, 2005

In foreign policy it’s critical to “know thine enemy.” So American policymakers should be aware that Russia and China are inching closer to identifying a common enemy — the United States.

The two would-be superpowers held unprecedented joint military exercises Aug. 18-25. Soothingly named “Peace Mission 2005,” the drills took place on the Shandong peninsula on the Yellow Sea, and included nearly 10,000 troops. Russian long-range bombers, the army, navy, air force, marine, airborne and logistics units from both countries were also involved.

Moscow and Beijing claim the maneuvers were aimed at combating terrorism, extremism and separatism (the last a veiled reference to Taiwan), but it’s clear they were an attempt to counter-balance American military might.

Joint war games are a logical outcome of the Sino-Russian Friendship and Cooperation Treaty signed in 2001, and reflect the shared worldview and growing economic ties between the two Eastern Hemisphere giants."

Russian nuclear bombers in Cuba?
July 23, 2008

The media has been abuzz today at the prospect of Russian nuclear bombers being stationed in Cuba if the US goes ahead with plans for missile defense bases in Eastern Europe.

The story has riled the US enough that a US general has been wheeled out to tell the world’s press that any Russian attempt to build another nuclear base in Cuba would cross US “red line”.

The story broke earlier this week, when Russian newspaper Izvestia quoted an un-named source from within the Russian military. He told the Russian daily:

“While they are deploying the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, our strategic bombers will already be landing in Cuba.”

The quote hasn’t been independently confirmed, but the Russian Defense Ministry added fuel to the fire when they refused to comment on the story.

The prospect of Russian nuclear forces being stationed in Cuba - which is, after all, only 90 miles from the US coast - would bring back some rather unpleasant memories for the US of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, where the Soviet Union under Nikita Kruschev launched an audacious and foolhardy bid to station nuclear missiles on the Caribbean island.

Russia to help Cuba modernize weaponry, train military

September 18, 2009

HAVANA, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - Modernization of the Soviet-made military equipment and training of Cuban military personnel will be the focus of Russian-Cuban military cooperation in the near future, the chief of the Russian General Staff said on Friday. Gen. Nikolai Makarov arrived on a working visit to Cuba on Monday, met with Cuban President Raul Castro and the country's military leadership, and visited a number of military installations.

"During the Soviet era we delivered a large number of military equipment to Cuba, and after all these years most of this weaponry has become obsolete and needs repairs," Makarov said.

"We inspected the condition of this equipment, and outlined the measures to be taken to maintain the defense capability of this country...I think a lot of work needs to be done in this respect, and I hope we will be able to accomplish this task," the general said.

Makarov said the Cuban request for assistance with training of military personnel will also be fully satisfied.

Although the Cuban leadership has repeatedly said it has no intention of resuming military cooperation with Russia after the surprise closure of the Russian electronic listening post in Lourdes in 2001, bilateral military ties seem to have been improving following the visit of Russian Security Council chief Nikolai Patrushev and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin to Cuba in July last year.

A group of Russian warships, led by the Admiral Chabanenko destroyer visited Cuba in December last year during a Caribbean tour.
