Japan is negotiating a contract with the United States that will provide Tokyo with sensitive information about the systems and performance of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) as it seeks to evaluate the aircraft in a bid to procure a next-generation fighter (FX) for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
A source at the Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) told Jane's on 6 October that the contract is expected to be signed shortly....the development signals a clear move by Japan towards the JSF - and away from the F-22 Raptor ...the MoD has been requesting the US government to provide us with information ... The source stressed, however, that the "contract for provision of information" did not mean that it had already selected the JSF.

Is this Japanese interest in PLAN A: buying affordable, finished samples off the shelf from the USA to stretch their precious defense yen, OR PLAN B: merely license production in Japan of a US-designed aircraft...?
Cuz there is CONSIDERABLY HIGHER transfer of stealth-related knowledge with plan B, OK?
We do NOT need to end up with all of Asia having this technology. Worst of all would be if we agreed to CO-DESIGN some radically-tweaked version of this aircraft, because then not only would they get all these new manufacturing techniques, but also the whole thought process that goes into it --they'd throw us overboard after they'd sucked our brains dry.
the F-35
If it means helping an ally, US production, and OBTW lowering the per-plane costs for us, lets do it!
Zactly..!
NK & PRC baddies really DO threaten, ergo let’s let Hatoyama reallllly stretch those newly strong yen and buy a whole mess of these babies.
If they have concerns about stratospheric quality standards, or they want to massage them or feed new Kobe-versions beer or whatever, fine...! Let them bring a whole gaggle of Hello-Kitty craving engineers over here to give us the pointers —we’ll house them, and keep the sensitive parts all black-boxed off from them, take them shooting, and to some Pahrump ho’ houses —dandy...!
IF their concerns are for a really robust and affordable defense of Japan —which is what everyone wants— they should be fine with this.
Let’s NOT give the store away for spare change —no.
I love JMSDF and all, but our Aegis stuff went over there and just ended up getting handed over to the PRC via the most basic Chinese honeytraps in the world, and WE DO NOT WANT THAT THIS TIME AROUND, NO THANK YOU.

.
Technology transfer is a much smaller risk than having US companies going out of business because they can’t sell overseas.
BTTT
Where is the part where the Japanese make it into a robot piloted by angsty teenagers???
Well they may want it because they forsee a future when they have been thrown under the bus by the administration and to the wolves in china/N. Korea......
Good question!
日本*ピング* (kono risuto ni hairitai ka detai wo shirasete kudasai : let me know if you want on or off this list)
She still hasnt figured out that it was me.
Sheesh.

Alas, not Krankor, it was Beldar goes to Japan.

She was with cone.
I doubt it’ll be like an anime/manga.
I would personally be perfectly happy with at least a squadron of F-22’s in Japan.
Are you sure it wasn’t Uranus.
The South shall rise again.
Japan needs something that will support nuke delivery. They can’t depend on ostammer for help when China, Russia and NK come for them.
As for being thrown overboard first, remember who’s in the WH now. None of our allies can or should trust the SOB. Israel just told him to bugger off, and western European countries aren’t too happy with him for a number of transgressions he’s committed while spouting NATO ‘unity.’
I say NO!
For the same reason they called a stealth bomber the F-117. Because pilots feel sexier when they're flying a fighter.
Besides, the F-35 IS able to do air-to-air.
Yeah, about as well as a harrier or an A-10 can. Not very well relative to the same generation of planes.
my father in law gets really annoyed by this point. He says it should be called an A-35 or at the very least F/A-35.
My father in law still holds the second most number of hours flown in the Air force with a distinguished flying cross while flying an F-104 in Nam.
I thought their new leader wanted to move close to china. Why should we sell them F-35s
