Good Samaritan Killed Trying To Stop Brutal Attack [New York City]

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A courageous neighbor makes the ultimate sacrifice; a Good Samaritan, stabbed to death, while trying to stop a man with a dagger during a violent assault.

Neighbors say the Good Samaritan, his wife and 2-year-old son had moved into a building in upper Manhattan from a shelter in Brooklyn just a few months ago. They say Marco Betancourt was always helping his neighbors at their building on 162 W. 144th Street.

That's why they weren't surprised to hear that Betancourt lost his life, selflessly trying to stop one neighbor from stabbing another, his mother's boyfriend, with a medieval-like dagger.

"We're still in shock. It's heartbreaking. I didn't go to work today. It's just too painful. I just can't describe it," said neighbor Esperanza Ramirez.

The violent spree started just before 7 p.m. Police got a 9-1-1 call and found 50-year-old Charles Davis outside on the street, stabbed three times.

When they went inside, officers said they found a crazed 21-year-old Carlton Lewis in the stairwell, holding the blood-soaked dagger. When he was ordered to drop the dagger, police say he refused and was shot and killed by police.

It wasn't until later that police found the body of Betancourt, upstairs in his fourth floor apartment, with his two-year-old son nearby, unharmed.

Ramirez said Betancourt often helped her with her 10-year-old son, taking care of their dog and giving a fish to her son Miguel.

"He always said, if you need anything, let me know," she said.

"He was really kind to me. He gave me a fish. He died helping other people," said Miguel.

The victim who suffered stab wounds is in stable condition at Harlem Hospital.

Very sad. He was even nobler than the Biblical Samaritan, who supplied needed aid but did not risk his life like this unfortunate fellow did. RIP

May he be greeted at the gates. Father, this was a rare one, may he reap his rewards in heaven.

Right. Too bad he didn’t bring a gun to the knife fight.

Yet more blood on the hands of gun-grabbing NY politicians.

We had an episode of a man getting crushed against a building by a car and killed while acting as a Good Samaritan. It was at the local Target.....I have never been able to get it out of my head.

Every time I go to the store I see the spot where he hit the building and think of his wife and the baby he never had the chance to see...

Good thing he didn’t have a gun, someone could have been hurt.

This was Monday's reading at Church:

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn, and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” --Lk 10:25-37

Yeah, thats a romantic thought. Heres a dose of reality.

Dead is just plain DEAD.

Heres some advice. If you dont have any weapon at all, youd best stay out of it, cause YOU will probably wind up being victim #2.

Had this happened in my community where a high proportion of the law-abiding population carry protection, there would have been no victims, and the perp would have gone to the morgue.

Frequently 'crazed' is a code term for drugged to the point where conscience and pain are non-events and the demons rule.

The “Good Samaritan” only fulfilled the basic requirement of God’s law to “love your neighbor as yourself”.

This is much closer to: “greater love, hath no man than this: that a man would lay down his life for his friends”

Too bad it was impossible for Mr. Betancourt to have a weapon like the cops did.

New York City—where it sucks.

May G*d rot New York Sh*tty.

Oops, I forgot, that already occurred. Behavior such sa the article describes is proof of the degradation of both the Big Sh*tty AND its denizens.

Faced with an astounding level of violent crime, the commie mentality of the Big Sh*tty forbids any arming of the people. Indeed, all in that pool of unending cess are disarmed by the Sullivan Law.

Anyone who lives there does so at his/her own risk.
