There are plenty of needy countries at the U.N. climate talks in Bangkok that make the case they need financial assistance to adapt to the impacts of global warming. Then there are the Saudis.
Saudi Arabia has led a quiet campaign during these and other negotiations demanding behind closed doors that oil-producing nations get special financial assistance if a new climate pact calls for substantial reductions in the use of fossil fuels.
That campaign comes despite an International Energy Agency report released this week showing that OPEC revenues would still increase $23 trillion between 2008 and 2030 a fourfold increase compared to the period from 1985 to 2007 if countries agree to significantly slash emissions and thereby cut their use of oil. That is the limit most countries agree is needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
The head of the Saudi delegation Mohammad S. Al Sabban dismissed the IEA figures as biased and said OPEC's own calculations showed that Saudi Arabia would lose $19 billion a year starting in 2012 under a new climate pact. The region would lose much more, he said.
We are among the economically vulnerable countries, Al Sabban told The Associated Press on the sidelines of the talks ahead of negotiations in Copenhagen in December for a treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.
This is very serious for us, he continued. We are in the process of diversifying our economy but this will take a long time. We don't have too many resources.

We’ve got their aid right here (imaginative graphic required here).
The idea of Chavez, Amaddogjihad being impoverished and their countries wracked with uprisings when they can't pay their bribes any more would almost, but not quite, be worth the damage those bills would do here. But now the only devastation will be to the US. The UN should just declare war on us and get it over with.
guys, quit laughing.
BO has already given a deal and Americaia paying for it.
He is giving away america mmmm, mmmm, mmmmm
The Saudi kings are billionaires—let them used their monies, not OURS. Also, give this money to Seniors instead for COLA. It is unfair to send unnecessary money to Brazil (Soros) and Arab countries (Muslims) when the people in the USA should come before foreign aid.
This would be heart-attack-inducing hilarious if it weren’t so completely crass and pathetic.
When the world pays to - balance our trade deficit/pay off our debt - we’ll start thinking about it.
The funniest thing is that by the time that Bozo figures out the new technology comes from the private sector and not gubermint, the Saudis man-boy will be long gone and they won’t have any butt kissers left to have tea with.

I cant WAIT for the day the middle east runs out of oil!
I WILL LAUGH MY BUTT OFF, when that God forsaken place is meaningless again, just like Africa.
It will be so gratifying to watch their infrastructure crumble and their society devolve into stone age anarchy.
Without oil they are nothing, they can kill themselves by the millions and no one will care anymore.
Wouldn’t waste the effort, besides we have enough sand for all the glass we will ever need. I say they have done such a swell job with the desalination plants that some how somewhere someone will come up with a way to formulate sand into something edible.
My vision had to do with a certain finger pointed skywards with the rest curled up into the fist. But I guess that wouldn’t matter much to them since the Farsi way of the salute is the same thing people do when trying to hitch a ride, only the thunmb is pointed towards the sky.
Only problem, he has an inverse relationship going. mmmm, mmmm, mmmm
Bigger govt and the destruction of the private sector mmmm, mmmm, mmm
Its all about the destruction of america, and the west mmmm, mmmm, mmmm
how long will it last? mmmmm , mmmmmm , mmmmmm
This is so laughable, it’s unreal. One of the kings of SA, Fahd, I think, created the climate of investment in foreign lands and allowed women to go to universities. He publicly stated that the reason was that SA had to plan for the future. A future in which the oil will eventually run out, and they will need new sources of income. They KNOW the oil will run dry at some point, and they have planned for it for at least two generations.
They have mountains of money. Let them fend for themselves. If they haven’t been responsible with it, let them suffer.
The Saudis feel that their revenues from oil will begin to drop around the year 2020 and they are trying to prepare for it. It has little to do with green technology but a lot to do with increasing non Saudi oil discoveries and the likely success of drilling for methane hydrates. Other than wheat (they are the fourth largest exporter of wheat) they have little else on which to base thier economy.
The money is going to stop and it could come a lot sooner than they expect.
