A Case of Pet Care and Politics (Pres of Humane Society also town's ACO)
New York Times ^ | October 7, 2009 | PETER APPLEBOME

Two things struck many people as odd three years ago when sheriff’s deputies came to Sandy Saunders’s 150-acre farm, said they had found “shocking” conditions, arrested him on nine counts of animal cruelty, and seized five horses, three sheep and a goat that have never been returned.

The first was that the barn owned by Mr. Saunders, a well-known local environmentalist and gadfly, was a popular and quite public gathering place. In the five weeks before the animals were seized, an annual barn dance there brought out perhaps 200 people, and a political fund-raiser drew 150. A woman who had visited with her children said that she had seen dozens of farms and that Mr. Saunders’s was “one of the cleanest and well-maintained I have come across.”

The second was that Barbara Dunn, the deputy who seized the animals and participated in a separate raid and arrest involving the care of purebred Maltese dogs that same month, was also the president of the Putnam Humane Society, where the animals were taken, which struck many people as an unfortunate mixing of responsibilities.

The two arrests set in motion a series of legal proceedings that culminated in the indictment of Deputy Dunn this week on 28 counts, including grand larceny, perjury and official misconduct, some stemming from her testimony in the investigation involving the dogs.

Why call them rightists when they’re leftists? :-)

And the average person doesn’t *get* it. And they won’t, until the day comes that they can’t get a purbred puppy or kitten if they want to.

Exactly. HSUS and other animal rights extremists want every dog and cat to come from the shelter, and if things keep going their way, that *will* be the only place to get a dog or cat in the future...until the day when there are NO dogs or cats left to be had anywhere.

...giving the president of the local Humane Society a badge and a license to investigate animal abuse isn’t the smartest move.

Giving anyone that badge is risky.

I’m confused. There was mention of a political fundraiser/politics but no mention of whether the bad guys/girl were lefties or you know shhh, Republicans.

Most of the proposed legislation does just that. Most gives the representative of HSUS or other such groups the right to enter your property and inspect it and to write you up for any condition they deem not to be satisfactory.

There were three such bills before the NC legislature this session and the most likely to pass was defeated only hours before the session ended for this term. That bill will be reintroduced next year.

HSUS has been smart in that they have put money into local elections resulting in their people holding office in the local courthouses all across the country.

Animal owners are in trouble and just don't realize how serious it is.

Actually, in California they’re moving in the opposite direction. Laws have been introduced several times to have mandatory spay/neuter of all dogs unless you buy an expensive “breeder’s license”. This would mean a decreased supply of shelter or mixed breed pets as people are usually not willing to pay big bucks for mixed breeds.

All my dogs have been mixed breed and each one was unique and wonderful.

Yes, also troubling is HSUS's new humane university...gonna be sending out graduates with missionary zeal to 'protect' animals and they are the ones who will be given positions with local animal control.

My hope is that Obummer, the Marxist now posing as a Fascist, and Vallerie Jarrett have gone too far with their czar appointments, etc., and that there will be a real rise of realists who see that this country can not continue on the path set by Pelosi, Reid, etc.

A real change in the government would do a lot to stop the crazies at the lower levels of government.

In other words, a reversal thoughout government.

The goal of mandatory spay/neuter is reduced shelter populations, but I'm not sure it works that way in actual practice. My guess is that the people who are responsible for the majority of the problem are least likely to follow mandatory spay/neuter laws.

BTW, mandatory spay/neuter is rotten, rotten law. SB250 would have mandated *pediatric* sterilization. There are serious health considerations involved in (pediatric) spay/neuter, but the proponents of mandatory spay/neuter never discuss that part of the equation. Vet associations are against mandatory spay/neuter; ASPCA is against it. HSUS was actually neutral on SB250 in California.

Shelter populations as a percentage of total owned dogs has dramatically and steadily dropped since the 1970s. Education and voluntary spay/neuter have worked. Can we do better? You betcha, but MSN isn't the way to do it :-)

Missy (who has mixed-breed and purebred dogs, some sterilized and some not and who has never bred a litter, intentional or otherwise.)

Too bad conservatives don’t have the smarts, the will, and the cohesion to do that.
