Dell plans to close its computer manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem by January, and lay off 905 employees.
Dell opened the assembly plant in 2005 and was offered a massive incentives package valued at $305 million if it met hiring and investment goals. The project was seen as a major economic development victory by supporters and a huge waste of taxpayer money by critics.
About 600 workers at the plant will be let go next month, Dell announced this afternoon. The rest will be out of work by early next year.
The closure of the Forsyth County plant is part of a broader cost-cutting effort by Dell, which is trying to offset weaker PC sales worldwide during the recession.
"This is a difficult decision, especially for our North Carolina colleagues, but a necessary one for Dell customers and our company," vice president Frank Miller said in a prepared statement.
LOL. More chinese communists will have jobs. Yipeee

I don’t think Michael Dell has EVER built a plant unless he has strongarmed a sweetheart deal out of the local taxpayers.
He’s been doing it around here since... well, since he started in business.
Well, at least the good citizens of W-S will have a lovely tombstone of a plant to admire.
once he taxpayer benefit is gone they close the factory?
I dont blame him... business is business
He could do something better for PR- but the bottom line is the bottom line and government screwed with the market mechanics when they gave him a huge tax benefit
Wow! This is devastating for that area! There’s going to be a ripple affect from this to all of the shops and jobs in the area that depend on the Dell plant for their own production. I remember the folks in NC moving Heaven and Earth to get that plant built there.
This is a bit of a shock, because it hasn’t been there very long at all. Not even 6 years, I don’t think.
Very sad news....
They're more than happy to do the manufacturing at a LOW price that American UNIONS will NOT allow!
Way to go Obama!!!!!!
Hey NC, how is that Hope and Change working out for you? This must be the green shoots the administration was talking about.
2005. So barely four years.
The state of NC bent over backwards to get Dell. They gave Dell every tax break possible and incentive they could think of. The whole project has been a failure. Dell never lived up to any of its promises of employment and such.
How about this: Quit giver incentives to attract businesses. Lower all the damn taxes for everyone and then you won’t need to give incentives.
The fact that you have to give incentives means that your taxes are too high.
IDIOTS.
Bingo!
It's ALWAYS a Bad Thing when a government grants an advantage or favor to a single company.
Make your city or state a nice place to do business (lower taxes, fewer regulations, better infrastructure) and let the companies take care of the rest themselves.
Let me guess: The inventives expire on December 31, 2009. Now, why would I think that??
Ain’t Socialism a bitch???
Frontwards.
Have a Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!
Not like most of these companies are not hiring, they are just not doing it here.
Hmmm, so Dell got $305 million for a promise of 905 jobs for four years. My math works that out to $84,254 per worker per year. So Dell got NC to pay all of its salary cost (and then some). Wow. Just wow. NC got taken.
Not taking Dell’s side as he is supposedly a R but also invested in buying Indy Mac with Soros and hedge fund shorties (John Paulson & JC Flowers) after Soros and his shortie pals destroyed Indy Mac.
Dell’s business is sucking wind thanks to the Obama Depression. Just more Hope & Change.
Right now some midwestern state is looking at the possibility of luring Harley-Davidson production lines away from York, PA. And what is our governor, Fast Eddie Rendell going to do about it? Engage in a bidding war to keep the plant in York. Fact is, high tax rates give jokers like Rendell a lot of power to punish or do favors. In Harley's case he'd like to do a favor with Pennsylvania's tax money. But that won't lower the property taxes that H-D pays to the City & County of York. Which means even if we 'win' and H-D stays, we'll be playing this same game next recession.
It is sad news. However, my experience with Dell is likely symptomatic as to why. I’ve been a huge Dell advocate for years until this past one. I never get an American for tech support. I can never understand whoever I get, and, they never listen to what I’m telling them and make me go through steps I’ve already done (and tried to tell them that). My laptop is now in Houston for repairs. It has literally fallen apart. Their service has declined as has their quality. Two deathblows for any company.
“Dell closing Winston-Salem plant”
How’s that hope&change working out for y’all?
The only thing that Hope & Change has brought us so far is tons of Pink Slips & a broken Treasury.
Then would start hiring in April.
And they always seemed to make sure the layoffs did not affect the new hires.
That's one of many problems with this stimulus, CFC, and the IRS checks from 2 years ago. It's very hard to buy anything made here anymore, so we end up stimulating someone else's economy.
So which maker do you recommend ?
once he taxpayer benefit is gone they close the factory?
I dont blame him... business is business
Sounds more like Socialism. Michael Dell and Dell are Socialist. They cannot run a business without government welfare
This is the problem with Business Socialism....it is not capitalist in any sense.
Last Dell I bought was about 7 years ago...Never again will I make that mistake.
Who you kidding? Union or no union, how in hell are American workers going to compete with Communist Chinese peasant workers making a small fraction of what Americans do?
Answer: Were not.
That's easy. Those same American workers can buy what they build. When we weigh the cost of unemployment, loan defaults, foreclosures, and lower property values, paying $.50 more for a pen made in the US doesn't seem all that expensive.
That's easy. Those same American workers can buy what they build.
Oh, so a non-union worker, making 40k per year, can compete with a Chinese peasant, making 1k per year?
How exactly does that work?
As I said, I would rather pay $.50 more a pen made in the US than pay more in taxes for 9.8% and rising unemployment, or higher interest because of defaults and foreclosures.
Having said that and believing in buying American, I won't fault anyone who refuses to buy a UAW car.
I honestly don’t know at this point. Dell has been my brand for years. When I get a job, I’m likely going to get a Mac.
People in NC are going off the deep end without Senator Helms there to guide them even half-way.
The CHINESE are LOVING it! They're more than happy to do the manufacturing at a LOW price that American UNIONS will NOT allow!

How is this related to your post?
The fact is, union or no union, Americans can't compete with 2 dollar a day workers, which is why the greedy bastards are shipping their companies off shore to places like Red China.
Did you read the latest “ green news “ regarding Apple and the American Chamber Of Congress ?
My reply is related to your post in that to bring jobs back to the US, we have to make it profitable to build here again, and we do that by buying American. Even if they cost more up front, it's less expensive in the long run than what we're losing now.
Bring your attention to the new models that are being directed at Americans, that appear to be customized golf carts...The third world is used to these cheap little death traps.
Did you notice while they build up the economies of other countries, our standard of living/economy is declining.
“Frontwards.”
Yeah. I guess so. That makes more sense.
“People in NC are going off the deep end without Senator Helms there to guide them even half-way.”
I didn’t always agree with him, but I absolutely loved the fact that you knew exactly where he stood. He didn’t sugar coat anything or play to opinion polls.

“Well, at least the good citizens of W-S will have a lovely tombstone of a plant to admire.”
With all the loading docks its got it will make one hell of a distribution center in about 20 years.
That $305 Million was to be spread out over 20 years. The actual cash the taxpayers ponied up was significantly less.
My son went to work for this plant when they first opened. He went to Nashville to train and was making $17/hr. at 18 years of age, pretty good around here for a high school grad.
The corporate structure was too much for him, he left after a year and will graduate from college this December.
The production line that was trained had people whose prior employment were barbers, hair dressers and restaurant staff.
The plant was state of the art. It’ll be gutted and reduced to a shell.
I doubt that was a union plant, unions are not very strong in the Carolinas. I have worked for several major corporations over the past forty four years and not once did I work where there was a union presence.
learn the word "OLIGHARCHY"....the many ruled by a few.....
I sure did. As I said, they don’t make a profit until they sell, and I won’t help them make a profit with my consumer dollars. I’ll take a built in America, 33 MPG Focus (and try to ignore the UAW sticker) over one of those , uh, cars any day.
