Obama's permanent depression
Asia Times ^ | Oct 6, 2009 | David P Goldman

President Barack Obama may be remembered for permanent depression, the way that Leon Trotsky's name is linked with permanent revolution. Fiscal stimulus combined with near-zero interest rates have proven to be a toxic cocktail for the United States, the macroeconomic equivalent of barbiturates and alcohol.

Keynesian spending creates a deficit that sucks all the available capital out of the grassroots economy and transfers it to the Treasury market. Easy funding terms from the Federal Reserve allow financial institutions to make money in government bonds while shutting off credit to the rest of the economy. It's classic crowding out,........(rest at link)

Depression, or developing eco-topia? I'll tell you one thing: economic contraction doesn't go down real big with ordinary voters, of either party. Concepts like "getting even with whitey" lose a lot of their power to motivate when everything's grinding to a halt and foreign powers are humiliating us.

I was a young adult during Carter. I remember the "Teamsters for Reagan" posters on the wall in the shipping area of my workplace, back in '79.

The night the election results came in for Reagan over Jimmah, I was at Ft. Bragg. The entire base went wild, GI’s firing parachute flairs, whooping out the windows, honking horns. You would of though a little, pinched, bitter, small minded peanut brained idiot lost a job or something.

The thing is, both parties and the Fed have hooked like an addict us on private Federal Reserve Corporation paper money, and high debt.

What has happened is but a vibration, a tremor of the coming quake. We are not coming out of an event, which is what the high priests of the Fed believe/hope, but we are entering the event. This is just the beginning and the Fed, Bush, Paulson, Democrats and Obama are pouring fuel onto the fire.

I think we have too much of a tendency to assume that all is lost.

I disagree. While we’re certainly in for a rough ride, I still believe in the American spirit, American ingenuity, and our desire to thrive. It might have had a momentary brain fart, but that’s happened before.

Carter got us Reagan. Obama will get us ?????(Palin, maybe) but, if we just start “accepting” an economy that will never recover, or debt we can never get a handle on, or an Iran that will kill us with nukes, then that will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I think you have both the Government and the Fed taking ever more drastic measures to ward off the inevitable disaster. However, these measures will only make the pain worse. If Stimulus II comes out, we are all hosed. [In reality, Stimulus I is more like III—there were numerous, smaller stimulus measures that were passed by Congress and executed with zero effect,]

When will it hit the clueless moron in the oval office that he’s in way over his head? Relatively speaking, we are currently in the lull before the storm on the home front and in foreign affairs.

When the s*** hits the fan, he will cry like a little baby.

” I still believe in the American spirit, American ingenuity, and our desire to thrive “

While I agree with this sentiment, your conclusions don’t necessarily follow — we’re in “bad things happen to good people” territory here....

” but that’s happened before. “

I can forgive you for parroting this canard - it’s been the mantra of ‘pundits and experts’ since the beginning... *This* particular set of circumstances (the perfect storm of unretirable debt coupled with an increasingly urbanized and dependent population, among other factors) has NEVER occurred before - this is uncharted territory....

“, if we just start “accepting” “

You certainly are within your rights to ‘refuse to accept’ — but I think I’ll keep adding to my stocks of rice and beans....

I hope you’re the one who’s right....

Well, there goes about 80% of all our politicians.

But according to some, we have to still vote for ‘em, ‘cause their “electable”.

He, and all around them went to the supposedly best schools. They are lawyers. They are the anointed ones we have been waiting for.

(good luck in trying to change their world view. You would of had an easier chance with Hitler)

We can not even go on a tax strike. The Federal Reserve will just print more money and tax us through devaluation of our savings, investments and property.

Nice, eh?

(what’s the new word we need for financial serfdom?)

It’s a toxic swamp.

Liars
Delusionists.
Reformers and Do-gooders.
Hacks.
Time serving, ticket punching, tax eating, pension waiting shuffle bums.

Pretty much most government workers from towns on up can fit into any of the above categories.

Boy, I hope 0bama doesn't meet the same kind of end that Trotsky did, that would be truly tragic.

You can't beat somebody with nobody.

We must have an actual alternative, as we had Reagan in '80. IMHO, we need to settle on Palin now, and really push to get her nominated - or we will get worse, possibly even the reelection of Obama.

If the stimulus had been something like "We are going to build 100 nuclear plants and the fuel reprocessing facilities to reuse most of the spent fuel rods instead of just burying them" that would have been a long term benefit for the country. Instead we just pissed the money away on jumbo versions of the usual end of Congressional session pork bills.

Exactly right. And I wouldn't be surprised if some of the "stimulus money" actually goes to ripping down the Klamath River hyrdo-electric dams. The fools are trying to impoverish this country.

You can prepare while still moving forward...and you can be optimistic whilst keeping your head out of the sand...it’s not one or the other.

All I’m saying is if we just roll over and sit in the corner in a fetal position cocking our guns, we won’t be as successful as if we move forward with life, prepared as much as possible (including guns, rice, gold, and ammo), but continuing to personally further the cause of freedom and economic success to whatever degree we are able to despite circumstances.

Another point...

Conservatism, and freedom’s, biggest challenge in the long term is not debt, it’s not economics, it’s demographics.

Despite the fact that leftists support abortion, and seem to abhor children, they still outbreed conservatives somehow. Add in immigrants and it gets harder and harder to appeal conservatism to voters.

My son was halfway through boot camp at Parris Island on Election Day, 2008.

He told me that night did not go well.
