MONT VERNON, N.H. -- The four teenagers accused of breaking into a home here and using a machete and a knife to butcher a mother and her 11-year-old daughter allegedly chose their victims by chance.
"They picked the house at random because it was in an isolated area," prosecutor N. William Delker said today during the teens' arraignments in Milford District Court. "Before they entered the home, all four defendants were aware that the intent was to kill the occupants."
The violent whim allegedly took the teens to the home of Kim Cates, who lived in one of four houses on a quiet dirt road in this bucolic town about 13 miles north of the Massachusetts border. At 4 a.m. on Sunday, they are accused of breaking into the ranch-style home and killing Cates, 42, and severely injuring her daughter.
Prosecutors allege that Steven Spader, 17, drove that night and carried a machete, a detail that elicited a gasp of horror from the gallery when the crime was described in court. The lanky teen with buzzed hair wore baggy powder-blue basketball shorts and handcuffs as he faced charges that included murder and attempted murder. Like his three codefendants who were arraigned separately, Spader stood expressionless.

Man are they (the Chinese)on top of things! (And they charge the relatives for the execution/harvesting fees!!! Nothing goes to waste there...)

Why weren't all four of these bastards charged with murder? Instead, only two of them were.
The father of one of kids, Spader, I think, was already on the news trying to frame an alibi for him.
At least initially, two of them were armed when they entered the home and two were not. I’d be perfectly content if they fried them all.

This case will ignite the consevative base in NH like nothing has in a very long while.
Our country must come to grips with the issue of violence committed by those kids that have to grow-up in suburbia.
It seems that every time you turn around, there is some kid raised in one of those suburban homes that is our randomly murdering people. Sometimes they murder on the streets over a drug deal gone bad and other times it is just some random killings at a suburban high school or in someone’s house.

I’m not so sure. Seems to me that the films and TV have created a culture of destruction and death, and the kids have become desensitized. Don’t misunderstand - I’m not excusing these so-called humans - but, you know, we don’t allow marketing cigarettes to kids, but we don’t monitor the violence they watch all the time.
These guys are teens...what's waiting for them behind prison walls is going to be a fate worse than death, and they are looking at about 30 years of 'catching' for the 'home team'. Enjoy it, punks...you've earned it. (I would bill the parents for the costs of their incarceration. Why abuse the taxpayers?)

They carved up a little girl...inmates take a real dim view of that...expect a tragic suicide or two in the near future.

Again Hollywood is not to blame for the murderous actions of these kids or of the kids who killed that child in Chicago.

Four bullets and the state is saved the cost of a trial while justice gains a well deserved victory.

My first reaction was horror and anger of course. But really, this story makes no sense. There is something going on far deeper and far more evil than what this piece indicated.

Of course not. But do you not think that environment impacts a kid’s development? No, it’s not Hollywood’s fault - they don’t do the criminal acts, and they’re apparently providing what customers want to see, but constant violence can’t be good. Actually, I think parents should take a much more hands-on approach to parenting, and monitor what their kids do and see - but that’s a different subject.
Prayers need to be said for the victims, especially the little girl. Heartbreaking.
It never ceases to amaze me how depraved the human race actually is.
I work with folks whose kids are current high-school classmates and former childhood friends of the perps. According to a co-worker's child, one perp had drawn a swastika on his face and was a fan of Charles Manson. Maybe the child had meant this symbol.
