Last month, a new effort to reconnect the populace with its public servants was launched: Contract From America. This consultation exercise aims to gather ideas from the public on laws they would like to see passed or eliminated. The ideas will be boiled down to three in each policy area by a panel of tea party activists from all over the nation and then submitted to political leaders. Considering the arrogance displayed by many members of Congress towards their constituents and their wishes, this project intends to make them aware of just how driven people are to see a change in governmental behavior. An interview with Ryan Hecker, the head of Contract From America:

Go to the link for the interview. The Tea Party has been amorphous and this sounds like a promising idea. The site for Contract From America is http://www.contractfromamerica.com/Idea.aspx .

Servants, ha. Now Pelousi wants to introd a VAT which was ZERO’s idea all along. TAXES, TAXES. Meanwhile job losses are so great. Salaries stagnant and seniors no COLA. Rising healthcare costs for all. We have to march again!

Here in Wasilla, the Tea Party decided to tap into the enthusiasm of the participants, and formed a separate group, called "Conservative Patriots Group." Its aim is to educate the electorate on candidates, proposals, tax issues, and other electoral considerations. It is strictly local, encompassing the Mat-Su Valley (Palmer, Wasilla, Talkeetna and smaller environs) and hopes to encourage Conservative participation in election procedures, encourage and field Conservative candidacy, and generate and demonstrate support for Conservative principles.

So far, in its infancy, we have set up an information booth at the local "Home Show," at which we passed out numerous applications for membership, information sheets about the group and various ballot inititatives, as well as a list of Conservative candidates in the upcoming (today) local election. We have stood on street corners with signs supporting those candidates, and placed radio spots, print ads, and flyers.

This is our first season. By next year, we hope to be better organized and larger and better able to make the kind of difference that is necessary to educate the voters about principles, platforms, and Conservatism.
